South Africa quotes by Dan Rather
#4. There was a time in South Africa that people would put flaming tires around peoples' necks if they dis-sented. And in some ways the fear is that you will be necklaced here, you will have a flaming tire of lack of patriotism put around your neck. Now it is that fear that keeps journalists from asking the toughest of the tough questions ... And again, I am humbled to say, I do not except myself from this criticism. #Quote by Dan Rather

South Africa quotes by Robert Cohan
#13. As an American, the first thing I noticed about British dancers
was their intellectual response to movement. In countries like Israel, the USA,
Australia and South Africa, the approach is much more athletic. People spend
a lot of time outdoors, and play sports in clothing that exposes the body.
Northern Europeans tend to be more introverted – more covered up in every sense. #Quote by Robert Cohan
South Africa quotes by Kevin Pietersen
#14. Leaving South Africa was very difficult. #Quote by Kevin Pietersen
South Africa quotes by Mokokoma Mokhonoana

South Africa quotes by St. Lucia
#16. I feel like kids that grew up in New York City or in L.A. were exposed to all these subcultures and subgenres, whereas I was only exposed to the poppiest of pop music so I never had this negative connotation towards pop music. That's not South African music having an effect on me, but just how international music was filtered through South Africa affected me. It gave me a not-negative connotation towards pop music growing up. #Quote by St. Lucia
South Africa quotes by Edward Shils
#17. People afterward told him that it had taken courage to say what he thought. Not at all, he responded; it takes courage in the Soviet Union or in South Africa to say what one thinks, not in the United States. #Quote by Edward Shils
South Africa quotes by Sigmar Gabriel
#18. The G8 nations, together with the five major emerging economies of China, India, South Africa, Brazil, Mexico, use almost three-quarters of the Earth's biocapacity - the capacity of the world's ecosystems to produce natural resources and to reduce harmful substances. #Quote by Sigmar Gabriel
South Africa quotes by Athol Fugard
#19. I don't remember much about what he said because my head was trying to deal with that one word" the future! He kept using it ... " our future" "the country's future", "a wonderful future of peace and prosperity." What does he really mean, I keep asking myself. Why does my heart go hard and tight as a stone when he says it? I look around me in the location at the men and women who went out into that wonderful future before me. What do I see? Happy and contented shareholders in this in this exciting enterprise called the Republic of South Africa? No. I see a generation of tired, defeated men and women crawling back to their miserable little pondoks at the end of a day's work for the white baas or madam. And those are the lucky ones. They've at least got work. Most of them are just sitting around wasting away their lives while they wait helplessly for a miracle to feed their families, a miracle that never comes. #Quote by Athol Fugard
South Africa quotes by Zukiswa Wanner
#20. In South Africa today, black is the new black, bra. #Quote by Zukiswa Wanner

South Africa quotes by Meir Ezra
#23. If you see someone who doesn't have what they want it's because they cannot give. They cannot accept because they cannot give. #Quote by Meir Ezra
South Africa quotes by Wadah Khanfar
#24. I started as an engineer. I migrated to philosophy and international politics. And I did my studies about African - Africa democracy and democratization in Africa, taking Kenya as a model. And then, while I was doing so in 1996 in South Africa, Al Jazeera was established. So they requested me to be an analyst on African affairs. #Quote by Wadah Khanfar
South Africa quotes by Noam Chomsky
#25. In fact if you look at Reagan's global war on terrorism it very quickly turned into a massive terrorist war: [by us] Central America, South Africa, the Middle East, all U.S.-backed terrorism. That's one of the reasons why it disappeared from history and why the standard line is that Bush 43 declared the war on terror. Actually he just repeated what Reagan had said 20 years earlier. #Quote by Noam Chomsky
South Africa quotes by Alan Paton
#26. If you wrote a novel in South Africa which didn't concern the central issues, it wouldn't be worth publishing. #Quote by Alan Paton
South Africa quotes by St. Lucia
#27. There were times when I would suddenly realize making music is a crazy pipe dream. I would see bands that did super well in South Africa still struggling to survive, or even people on the international level who are doing well but financially can't really support themselves. #Quote by St. Lucia
South Africa quotes by L. Ron Hubbard
#28. The problem of South Africa is different than the world thinks. There is no native problem. The native worker gets more than white workers do in England! [ ... ] The South African government is not a police state. It's easier on people than the United States government! #Quote by L. Ron Hubbard
South Africa quotes by Terry Pratchett
#29. Anathema didn't only believe in ley-lines, but in seals, whales, bicycles, rainforests, whole grain in loaves, recycled paper, white South Africans out of South Africa, and Americans out of practically everywhere down to and including Long Island. She didn't compartmentalize her beliefs. They were welded into one enormous, seamless belief, compared with which that held by Joan of Arc seemed a mere idle notion. #Quote by Terry Pratchett
South Africa quotes by Kameron Hurley
#30. When I sat down with one of my senior professors in Durban, South Africa to talk about my Master's thesis, he asked me why I wanted to write about women resistance fighters.

"Because women made up twenty percent of the ANC's militant wing!" I gushed. "Twenty percent! When I found that out I couldn't believe it. And you know – women have never been part of fighting forces –"
The Huntress

The Huntress, art by S. Ross Browne

He interrupted me. "Women have always fought," he said.

"What?" I said.

"Women have always fought," he said. "Shaka Zulu had an all-female force of fighters. Women have been part of every resistance movement. Women dressed as men and went to war, went to sea, and participated actively in combat for as long as there have been people. #Quote by Kameron Hurley
South Africa quotes by Doris Lessing
#31. The point is, that the function of the novel seems to be changing; it has become an outpost of journalism; we read novels for information about areas of life we don't know - Nigeria, South Africa, the American army, a coal-mining village, coteries in Chelsea, etc. We read to find out what is going on. One novel in five hundred or a thousand has the quality a novel should have to make it a novel - the quality of philosophy. #Quote by Doris Lessing
South Africa quotes by Stephen Fry
#32. As humourless a lump of dough as ever held a torchlight vigil outside the South African Embassy or stuck an AIDS awareness ribbon on an unwilling first-nighter. #Quote by Stephen Fry
South Africa quotes by Henry Rollins
#33. Nelson Mandela will always be the face of South Africa. The traveler passing through the country will see Mandela's face almost everywhere he looks. Truly, the man is omnipresent. #Quote by Henry Rollins
South Africa quotes by Yuval Noah Harari
#34. In the late nineteenth century, many educated Indians were taught the same lesson by their British masters. One famous anecdote tells of an ambitious Indian who mastered the intricacies of the English language, took lessons in Western-style dance, and even became accustomed to eating with a knife and fork. Equipped with his new manners, he travelled to England, studied law at University College London, and became a qualified barrister. Yet this young man of law, bedecked in suit and tie, was thrown off a train in the British colony of South Africa for insisting on travelling first class instead of settling for third class, where 'coloured' men like him were supposed to ride. His name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. #Quote by Yuval Noah Harari
South Africa quotes by Peter Vollmer
#35. I had access to excerpts to the original version of Per Fine Ounce which were provided to us by David Jenkins, the son of Geoffrey Jenkins, with his consent to write another South Africa thriller using Commander Geoffrey Peace as the main character, and using the same title Per Fine Ounce. David kindly gave us permission to include previously unpublished extracts from the original Bond novel as a front piece for my novel. #Quote by Peter Vollmer

South Africa quotes by Martha McSally
#38. If it were in our national security to deploy to South Africa under apartheid, would we have found it acceptable or customary to segregate African American soldiers from other American soldiers, and say, 'It's just a cultural thing'? I don't think so. I would hope not. #Quote by Martha McSally

South Africa quotes by Ted Nugent
#45. The preponderance of South Africa is a different breed of man. I mean that with no disrespect. I say that with great respect. I love them because I'm one of them. They are still people of the earth, but they are different. They still put bones in their noses, they still walk around naked, they wipe their butts with their hands. And when I kill an antelope for 'em, their preference is the gut pile. #Quote by Ted Nugent

South Africa quotes by Mangosuthu Buthelezi

South Africa quotes by Haskell Wexler
#49. I don't know where you're reading all this stuff, but it's pretty accurate, yes. It was in 1942. I was on a ship called the Accelo(ph) coming back from the Red Sea and we were sunk off the coast of Africa by a German submarine. And I was in a lifeboat for 14 days and landed and lived with the Pondos in South Africa while - who took care of us and took care of me. I had some wound in my left leg. #Quote by Haskell Wexler

South Africa quotes by Tariq Ramadan

South Africa quotes by Arthur Ashe
#55. I would like to flood South Africa with black personages of all sorts of persuasions: writers, educators, businessmen, you name it. If you are black and have any clout at all, I would like to see you go to South Africa and look for yourself and come back and try to use the tools that you have at your command to try and help the brothers down there. #Quote by Arthur Ashe

South Africa quotes by Diane Brown
#58. There is a duality to South Africa, as in all of life itself, that is evident, and as stark as the inequality among its citizens #Quote by Diane Brown

South Africa quotes by Wilbur Smith
#60. I wanted to be a great white hunter, a prospector for gold, or a slave trader. But then, when I was eight, my parents sent me to a boarding school in South Africa. It was the equivalent of a British public school with cold showers, beatings and rotten food. But what it also had was a library full of books. #Quote by Wilbur Smith
South Africa quotes by Oliver Tambo

South Africa quotes by Nadine Gordimer
#62. About the joys and the courage, I really don't know what other people think. I just know that I've never left Africa. I've lived there all my life. And one of the wonderful things, in spite of all the terrible things that happen in South Africa, is the way people continue to keep their dignity. #Quote by Nadine Gordimer
South Africa quotes by Edward De Bono

South Africa quotes by J.M. Coetzee
#66. He would not mind hearing Petrus's story one day. But preferably not reduced to English. More and more he is convinced that English is an unfit medium for the truth of South Africa. Stretches of English code whole sentences long have thickened, lost their articulations, their articulateness, their articulatedness. Like a dinosaur expiring and settling in the mud, the language has stiffened. Pressed into the mold of English, Petrus's story would come out arthritic, bygone(117). #Quote by J.M. Coetzee
South Africa quotes by Gail Kelly
#67. Living in South Africa has had a very profound impact on my career. #Quote by Gail Kelly
South Africa quotes by Chuck Palahniuk
#68. When I visit my brother in South Africa, I order things I've only seen in zoos. Little deers and kudu, all the mammals you would never think of eating. #Quote by Chuck Palahniuk
South Africa quotes by Alan Paton
#69. Have you a room that you could let?"
"Yes, I have a room that I could let, but I do not want to let it. I have only two rooms, and there are six of us already, and the boys and girls are growing up. But school books cost money, and my husband is ailing, and when he is well it is only thirty-five shillings a week. And six shillings of that is for the rent, and three shillings of that is for the rent, and three shillings for travelling, and a shilling that we may all be buried decently, and a shilling for the books, and three shillings is for clothes and that is little enough, and a shilling for my husband's beer, and a shilling for his tobacco, and these I do not grudge for he is a decent man and does not gamble or spend his money on other women, and a shilling for the Church, and a shilling for sickness. And that leaves seventeen shillings for food for six, and we are always hungry. Yes I have a room but I do not want to let it. How much could you pay?"
"I could pay three shillings a week for the room."
"And I would not take it."
"Three shillings and sixpence."
"Three shillings and sixpence. You can't fill your stomach on privacy. You need privacy when your children are growing up, but you can't fill your stomach on it. Yes, I shall take three shillings and sixpence. #Quote by Alan Paton

South Africa quotes by Desmond Tutu
#71. At home in South Africa I have sometimes said in big meetings where you have black and white together: 'Raise your hands!' Then I have said: 'Move your hands,' and I've said 'Look at your hands - different colors representing different people. You are the Rainbow People of God. #Quote by Desmond Tutu
South Africa quotes by Noam Chomsky
#72. Cuba forces in Angola gave a real shot in the arm to the liberation movements, and it also was a lesson to the white South Africans that the end is coming. They can't just hope to subdue the continent on racist grounds. #Quote by Noam Chomsky

#73. The free world wants to feed South Africa to the Red Crocodile [communism], to appease its hunger. #Quote by P. W. Botha
South Africa quotes by Patrick Soon-Shiong
#74. In South Africa, being Chinese meant I wasn't white and I wasn't black. I trained in Baragwanath Hospital, the largest black hospital in South Africa. That was around 1976, the time of the Soweto Uprising, when police fired on children and students who were protesting. I was part of the group of interns who volunteered to treat them. #Quote by Patrick Soon-Shiong
South Africa quotes by Michael Gove
#75. Democratic self-government has manifestly brought benefits to India, Japan, Norway, Switzerland, South Africa, South Korea, and scores of nations all making their way in the world. #Quote by Michael Gove
South Africa quotes by Manto Tshabalala-Msimang
#76. I think the TAC was just a disgrace, a disgrace not only to the [health] department but a disgrace to the whole country. But I think, as South Africa, we really demonstrated that we are doing pretty well. #Quote by Manto Tshabalala-Msimang
South Africa quotes by Desmond Tutu
#77. The miracle was the result of the negotiated settlement. There would have been no negotiated settlement and so no new democratic South Africa had the negotiators on one side insisted that all perpetrators be brought to trial. While the Allies could pack up and go home after Nuremberg, we in South Africa had to live with one another. #Quote by Desmond Tutu
South Africa quotes by St. Lucia
#78. I think I was just too young to even understand what was going on. When I was still living in South Africa, there was still so much racial tension. #Quote by St. Lucia
South Africa quotes by Rudolph Straeuli
#79. South African rugby doesn't have to stand back for anyone. #Quote by Rudolph Straeuli
South Africa quotes by Patrice Motsepe
#80. The export of oil, the export of minerals, will for many decades continue to be a critical part for the growth of African economies. The emphasis is on diversification. We have for many years - not just in South Africa but in many parts of the continent - spoken about beneficiation. And I think part of the secret, in relation to beneficiation, is you have got to make it attractive, profitable for the private sector - and it will take off. You may have to look at mechanisms like tax concessions ... You will not have to worry about beneficiation if it makes commercial sense. #Quote by Patrice Motsepe
South Africa quotes by Desmond Tutu
#81. South Africa, so utterly improbably, is a beacon of hope in a dark and troubled world. #Quote by Desmond Tutu
South Africa quotes by Clive James
#82. A decade ago, critics suggested biotech crops would not be valuable in the developing world. Now 90 percent of farmers who benefit are resource-poor farmers in developing countries. These helped alleviate 7.7 million subsistence farmers in China, India, South Africa, the Philippines from abject poverty. #Quote by Clive James
South Africa quotes by Shane Warne
#83. I think we have got the wood on South Africa, but that does not mean they are not a good team. They intimidate a lot of teams but we intimidate them. There is no disrespect for South Africa; they are a very good team. #Quote by Shane Warne
South Africa quotes by Desmond Tutu
#84. We learn from history that we don't learn from history! #Quote by Desmond Tutu
South Africa quotes by Josiah Strong
#85. The Anglo-Saxon has established himself in climates totally diverse - Canada, South Africa, and India - and, through several generations, has preserved his essential race characteristics. He is not, of course, superior to climatic influences; but even in warm climates, he is likely to retain his aggressive vigor long enough to supplant races already enfeebled. #Quote by Josiah Strong
South Africa quotes by Jacob Zuma
#86. The ANC will rule South Africa until Jesus comes back. #Quote by Jacob Zuma
South Africa quotes by Michelle Alexander
#87. The racial dimension of mass incarceration is its most striking feature. No other country in the world imprisons so many of its racial or ethnic minorities. The United States imprisons a larger percentage of its black population than South Africa did at the height of apartheid. In Washington, D.C., our nation's capitol, it is estimated that three out of four young black men (and nearly all those in the poorest neighborhoods) can expect to serve time in prison. Similar rates of incarceration can be found in black communities across America.

These stark racial disparities cannot be explained by rates of drug crime. Studies show that people of all colors use and sell illegal drugs at remarkably similar rates. If there are significant differences in the surveys to be found, they frequently suggest that whites, particularly white youth, are more likely to engage in drug crime than people of color. That is not what one would guess, however, when entering our nation's prisons and jails, which are over-flowing with black and brown drug offenders. In some states, black men have been admitted to prison on drug charges at rates twenty to fifty times greater than those of white men. And in major cities wracked by the drug war, as many as 80 percent of young African American men now have criminal records and are thus subject to legalized discrimination for the rest of their lives. These young men are part of a growing undercaste, permanently locked up and locked out of mainstre #Quote by Michelle Alexander
South Africa quotes by Adhir Kalyan
#88. I was raised in a spirit of the importance of service to your fellow man. My mom is a senator back home in South Africa. My father is a very caring and generous individual. #Quote by Adhir Kalyan
South Africa quotes by Manto Tshabalala-Msimang
#89. South Africa is the only country in the world who gives AZT to health workers for needle-stick injuries. It's very doubtful that we're doing the right thing. #Quote by Manto Tshabalala-Msimang
South Africa quotes by James G. Leyburn
#90. Modern critics find much that is unlovely in the religion established by the Scottish reformers. It was Hebraic and Old Testament in its emphasis, stressing the thou-shalt-nots and the denunciation of sin. It was not a religion of kindness to one's fellows or of gentle manners. Scots, like their fellow-Calvinist contemporaries of the seventeenth century, the Boers of South Africa, regarded themselves as a chosen people, elect of God, and their God was an awful Majesty, given to revenge upon His enemies. #Quote by James G. Leyburn
South Africa quotes by Wilbur Smith
#91. As regards to personal safety, you do have to be careful not to put yourself at risk when travelling in South Africa. You don't want to go out exploring at night, for example. #Quote by Wilbur Smith
South Africa quotes by Chiwetel Ejiofor
#92. I remember being very affected by what was going on there towards the end of Apartheid. And the subject is still very pertinent, politically, to what's happening around the world today, in terms of negotiating peace talks. I had always been interested in this period of change in South Africa, generally, for a variety of reasons. #Quote by Chiwetel Ejiofor
South Africa quotes by Alice Krige
#93. I grew up in South Africa without a television; there was no television, and the year after I left, television arrived in South Africa, so I have never really acquired a taste for watching television. #Quote by Alice Krige
South Africa quotes by Waqar Younis
#94. I am happy that we are not favorites. To be very honest it's big pressure of being favorites. We were not favorites last time (in 2011) too but we played excellent cricket. Similarly this time, there are teams which play on those bouncy wickets like Australia and South Africa, and are probably bigger favorites than us. But we hope that with the type of resources we have we can do well. #Quote by Waqar Younis
South Africa quotes by Nelson Mandela
#95. We must use time wisely and forever realize that the time is always ripe to do right. #Quote by Nelson Mandela
South Africa quotes by Desmond Tutu
#96. I have been to the Occupied Palestinian Territory, and I have witnessed the racially segregated roads and housing that reminded me so much of the conditions we experienced in South Africa under the racist system of Apartheid. #Quote by Desmond Tutu
South Africa quotes by Nicky Oppenheimer
#97. Businesses need certainty, to see clearly the rules of engagement for investing in South Africa. #Quote by Nicky Oppenheimer
South Africa quotes by Naomie Harris
#98. One of the saddest aspects for me about filming in South Africa was that the real inequalities are still very much in place - and those are economic inequalities. #Quote by Naomie Harris
South Africa quotes by Nelson Mandela
#99. Overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is an act of justice. It is the protection of a fundamental human right, the right to dignity and a decent life.
[ Live 8 Concert, Mary Fitzgerald Square, Johannesburg, South Africa, 2 July 2005] #Quote by Nelson Mandela
South Africa quotes by Ferial Haffajee
#100. The idea of black poverty is always presented as the outcome of white wealth, but what South Africa has is a poverty problem, not necessarily a black poverty problem because it is a largely black country. #Quote by Ferial Haffajee
South Africa quotes by Cleve Jones
#101. When we weren't dancing or fucking, we were marching. Marching for the Sandinistas and against Nicaraguan strongman Somoza. Marching for the Filipino people and against the dictator Ferdinand Marcos. Marching in solidarity with the people of Chile and against the murderous General Pinochet. Marching against nuclear power and offshore oil drilling. Marching for equal pay for women in the US and against apartheid in South Africa. #Quote by Cleve Jones
South Africa quotes by Zola Budd
#102. When you sit in America you miss the open plains and you miss the sound of rain and the smell of rain and the smell of the veld. If you're African it's different and I don't think one will ever become an American or British. It doesn't matter where you move, you will always be a South African, #Quote by Zola Budd
South Africa quotes by Trevor O'Hoy
#103. An extremely competitive retail market is pushing extensive discounting and large volumes of wine at low prices, and New World competitors from South America and South Africa are also impacting on the market. #Quote by Trevor O'Hoy
South Africa quotes by Trevor Noah
#104. He just never understood how white people could be racist in South Africa. "Africa is full of black people," he would say. "So why would you come all the way to Africa if you hate black people? If you hate black people so much, why did you move into their house?" To him it was insane. Because #Quote by Trevor Noah
South Africa quotes by Trevor Noah
#105. I was born in South Africa during apartheid, a system of laws that made it illegal for people to mix in South Africa. And this was obviously awkward because I grew up in a mixed family. My mother's a black woman, South African Xhosa woman ... and my father's Swiss, from Switzerland. #Quote by Trevor Noah
South Africa quotes by Trevor Noah
#106. In Germany, no child finishes high school without learning about the Holocaust. Not just the facts of it but the how and the why and the gravity of it - what it means. As a result, Germans grow up appropriately aware and apologetic. British schools treat colonialism the same way, to an extent. Their children are taught the history of the Empire with a kind of disclaimer hanging over the whole thing. "Well, that was shameful, now wasn't it?"
In South Africa, the atrocities of apartheid have never been taught that way. We weren't taught judgment or shame. We were taught history the way it's taught in America. In America, the history of racism is taught like this: "There was slavery and then there was Jim Crow and then there was Martin Luther King Jr. and now it's done." It was the same for us. "Apartheid was bad. Nelson Mandela was freed. Let's move on." Facts, but not many, and never the emotional or moral dimension. It was as if the teachers, many of whom were white, had been given a mandate. "Whatever you do, don't make the kids angry. #Quote by Trevor Noah
South Africa quotes by Thabo Mbeki
#107. The reports from the scientific world are that there is a very severe and escalating impact of HIV and AIDS in South Africa, and from what I have read, it is assuming particular, distinct characteristics, which, for instance, were atypical of how this phenomenon had developed in the States. This meant that we must look at what it is that results in all of this, specific to our country. #Quote by Thabo Mbeki
South Africa quotes by Nelson Mandela
#108. Press Freedom will never be under threat in South Africa for as long as the ANC is the majority party #Quote by Nelson Mandela
South Africa quotes by Imraan Coovadia
#109. They put exclusively black history in the syllabus. Is there a difference between a black history of the world and a proper history? They say children must read black novels. Does a novel have a skin colour? #Quote by Imraan Coovadia
South Africa quotes by Dauglas Dauglas
#110. MOUNT PLAASMOORDE
If ever you visit South Africa
And do
Leave the brilliant beaches of Cape Town for a moment
Climb Mount Plaasmoorde Witkruis monument
And you'll see the victims of apartheid
White crosses marking a thousand white victims
Planted in the earth of a million black victims
They lie dissolved in the humus of the soils
They were too many to have their own marked graves
Too many to build black crosses for
And just too hard to forget about
Because they make the soil under your feet black #Quote by Dauglas Dauglas
South Africa quotes by Nadine Gordimer
#111. The Communist Party is very popular in South Africa, especially among the young people. Never having had a chance to travel, and having suffered so much under capitalism, they still can't believe that the Russian people themselves have rejected it. #Quote by Nadine Gordimer
South Africa quotes by John Lydon
#112. Anger is an energy. It really bloody is. It's possibly the most powerful one-liner I've ever come up with. When I was writing the Public Image Ltd song 'Rise', I didn't quite realize the emotional impact that it would have on me, or anyone who's ever heard it since. I wrote it in an almost throwaway fashion, off the top of my head, pretty much when I was about to sing the whole song for the first time, at my then new home in Los Angeles. It's a tough, spontaneous idea. 'Rise' was looking at the context of South Africa under apartheid. I'd be watching these horrendous news reports on CNN, and so lines like 'They put a hotwire to my head, because of the things I did and said', are a reference to the torture techniques that the apartheid government was using out there. Insufferable. You'd see these reports on TV and in the papers, and feel that this was a reality that simply couldn't be changed. So, in the context of 'Rise', 'Anger is an energy' was an open statement, saying, 'Don't view anger negatively, don't deny it – use it to be creative.' I combined that with another refrain, 'May the road rise with you'. When I was growing up, that was a phrase my mum and dad – and half the surrounding neighbourhood, who happened to be Irish also – used to say. 'May the road rise, and your enemies always be behind you!' So it's saying, 'There's always hope', and that you don't always have to resort to violence to resolve an issue. Anger doesn't necessarily equate directly to violence. Vio #Quote by John Lydon
South Africa quotes by Mark Gevisser
#113. Remember one thing as South Africa prepares to go to the polls this week and the world grapples with the ascendancy of the African National Congress leader Jacob Zuma: South Africa is not Zimbabwe.
In South Africa, no one doubts that Wednesday's elections will be free and fair. While there is an unacceptable degree of government corruption, there is no evidence of the wholesale kleptocracy of Robert Mugabe's elite. While there has been the abuse of the organs of state by the ruling ANC, there is not the state terror of Mugabe's Zanu-PF. And while there is a clear left bias to Zuma's ANC, there is no suggestion of the kind of voluntarist experimentation that has brought Zimbabwe to its knees. #Quote by Mark Gevisser
South Africa quotes by Nelson Mandela
#114. At the outset, I want to say that the suggestion that the struggle in South Africa is under the influence of foreigners or communists is wholly incorrect. I have done whatever I did because of my experience in South Africa and my own proudly felt African background, and not because of what any outsider might have said. #Quote by Nelson Mandela
South Africa quotes by Meir Ezra
#115. If a person argues with you, know they are uncertain. #Quote by Meir Ezra
South Africa quotes by Malcolm X
#116. There is no more apartheid in South Africa than in the United States. #Quote by Malcolm X
South Africa quotes by Rose Bird
#117. We are incarcerating more people on a per capita basis in California than any country in the world other than South Africa or the Soviet Union. #Quote by Rose Bird
South Africa quotes by Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela
#118. That one is not confronted with the choices de Kock could have to could not have made, that one was not a member of the privileged class in apartheid South Africa are matters of sheer grace. #Quote by Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela
South Africa quotes by Noam Chomsky
#119. In the years of the Reagan-Bush administration alone, about 1.5 million people were killed by South Africa just in the surrounding countries. Forget what was happening in South Africa and Namibia. #Quote by Noam Chomsky
South Africa quotes by Louis Oosthuizen
#120. I grew up in Mossel Bay in South Africa on the Garden Route. It's really windy there, and I like it. I enjoy links golf a lot. #Quote by Louis Oosthuizen
South Africa quotes by Chris Albrecht
#121. One of the reasons to go to South Africa is because we can create great standing sets, both interior and exterior, and have the opportunity to create an actual water set outside, which will allow us to build a boat and probably part of another ship to be able to really bring that world to life. #Quote by Chris Albrecht
South Africa quotes by Tom Morello
#122. I myself am a very, very peaceful person. Throughout our history, from our own American revolution to the resistance against apartheid in South Africa, to labor strikes in the US, people have resorted to violence to achieve a more progressive society, from time to time. #Quote by Tom Morello
South Africa quotes by P. W. Botha
#123. South Africa is not a jellyfish and is in many respects a swordfish. #Quote by P. W. Botha
South Africa quotes by Hendrik Verwoerd
#124. The Jews took Israel from the Arabs after the Arabs had lived there for a thousand years. Israel, like South Africa, is an apartheid state. #Quote by Hendrik Verwoerd
South Africa quotes by Ilana Mercer
#125. In democratic South Africa, dispossession is nine-tenths of the law. #Quote by Ilana Mercer
South Africa quotes by Nelson Mandela
#126. Friends, comrades and fellow South Africans. I greet you all in the name of peace, democracy and freedom for all! I stand here before you not as a prophet but as a humble servant of you, the people. Your tireless and heroic sacrifices have made it possible for me to be here today. I therefore place the remaining years of my life in your hands. #Quote by Nelson Mandela
South Africa quotes by Pratibha Patil
#127. We view South Africa as one of our closest strategic partners in the developing world and in the African continent. #Quote by Pratibha Patil
South Africa quotes by Robert Mugabe
#128. Our economy is a hundred times better, than the average African economy. Outside South Africa, what country is [as good as] Zimbabwe? ... What is lacking now are goods on the shelves-that is all. #Quote by Robert Mugabe
South Africa quotes by Lisa See
#129. The Exclusion Act of 1882 was devastating. Under this law, Chinese laborers wouldn't be allowed to enter the United States for ten years. The wives of current resident laborers were also barred from entry. All Chinese needed to be registered and carry their residency papers at all times. Finally, they were declared totally ineligible for citizenship. (This clause alone allowed the United States to join Nazi Germany and South Africa as the only nations ever to withhold naturalization on purely racial grounds.) #Quote by Lisa See
South Africa quotes by Pius Langa
#130. In the criminal law [ ... ] imprisonment should be resorted to only after the most anxious consideration. #Quote by Pius Langa
South Africa quotes by Joan Ganz Cooney
#131. In South Africa, where HIV-positive children are often shunned, we have an HIV-positive Muppet to teach children to be friendly with children with HIV. But they use local actors. And it's not always a street. Sometimes it's 'Sesame Plaza,' or 'Sesame Tree.' #Quote by Joan Ganz Cooney
South Africa quotes by Oliver Tambo
#132. We believe that the world, too, can destroy apartheid, firstly by striking at the economy of South Africa. #Quote by Oliver Tambo

South Africa quotes by Ernie Els
#136. I never thought I'd be comfortable living outside South Africa, but we love London. Our two kids were born here. #Quote by Ernie Els
South Africa quotes by Steven Biko
#137. We have set out on a quest for true humanity, and somewhere on the distant horizon we can see the glittering prize. Let us march forth with courage and determination, drawing strength from our common plight and our brotherhood [and sisterhood]. In time we shall be in a position to bestow upon South Africa the greatest gift possible
a more human face #Quote by Steven Biko
South Africa quotes by Forest Whitaker
#138. Trying to understand, inside, what it is to be Ugandan was crucial to the character, because there are Ugandan ways of doing things that I was trying to capture. Even if I had made this movie in South Africa, it would not have been the same, because it is so specific to Uganda. #Quote by Forest Whitaker
South Africa quotes by P. W. Botha
#139. The security and happiness of all minority groups in South Africa depend on the Afrikaner. Whether they are English- or German- or Portuguese- or Italian-speaking, or even Jewish-speaking, makes no difference. #Quote by P. W. Botha
South Africa quotes by Stephen Keshi
#140. I heard the South African 'keeper had been killed and I thought it was probably one of their former goalkeepers, but when I confirmed it was Senzo Meyiwa, I was shattered. #Quote by Stephen Keshi
South Africa quotes by Ally Carter
#141. Back in Brooklyn, the wind was sharp and the streets were slick and Kat just really wished her Uncle Eddie believed in leaving a key under the mat instead of maintaining his strict stance that anyone who could not break into his Brooklyn brownstone had absolutely no business staying there without him.
"Is there a problem, Kitty Kat?" a voice said from over Kat's shoulder. Kat's fingers were frozen and her breath fogged, and she'd had a far too upbeat rendition of "White Christmas" stuck in her head on a perpetual loop for the past eight hours. So, yes, there was a problem. But Kat would never, ever admit it.
"I'm fine, Gabrielle," she told her cousin.
"Really?" Gab asked. "Because if you can't handle Uncle Eddie's lock then someone is going to get a lump of coal in her stocking again this Christmas."
"It wasn't coal," Kat shot back. "It was a very rare mineral from a condemned mine in South Africa, and it was a very thoughtful gift. #Quote by Ally Carter
South Africa quotes by Lily Herne
#142. Father's always saying that South Africa must be one of the best countries in the world for surviving a zombie apocalypse,' Megan says seriously. 'It's full of security estates and high fences. #Quote by Lily Herne
South Africa quotes by EL Seed
#143. Everywhere I've been, from South Africa to Brazil, people are connected to it. For me, art is a way to bring people together. You can put people on the same level, the perception is the same. You can bring a worker, like a cleaning guy, or the richest guy on earth, and they will have the same feeling or they would be able to feel the same. #Quote by EL Seed
South Africa quotes by Quincy Jones
#144. Working with kids in Soweto in South Africa, it's rough out there. But the bottom line is you've got to go to know. In Cambodia, there are 10,000 landmines. Same in Afghanistan, same in Colombia. I'm totally addicted to traveling. #Quote by Quincy Jones
South Africa quotes by Noam Chomsky
#145. Take Canada again: why does Canada have the health-care program it does? Up until the mid-1960s, Canada and the United States had the same capitalist health service: extremely inefficient, tons of bureaucracy, huge administrative costs, millions of people with no insurance coverage―exactly what would be amplified in the United States by Clinton's proposals for "managed competition" [put forward in 1993].21 But in 1962 in Saskatchewan, where the N.D.P. is pretty strong and the unions are pretty strong, they managed to put through a kind of rational health-care program of the sort that every industrialized country in the world has by now, except the United States and South Africa. Well, when Saskatchewan first put through that program, the doctors and the insurance companies and the business community were all screaming―but it worked so well that pretty soon all the other Provinces wanted the same thing too, and within a couple years guaranteed health care had spread over the entire country. And that happened largely because of the New Democratic Party in Canada, which does provide a kind of cover and a framework within which popular organizations like unions, and then later things like the feminist movement, have been able to get together and do things. #Quote by Noam Chomsky
South Africa quotes by Pius Langa
#146. The difference between the past and the present is that individual freedom and security no longer fall to be protected solely through the D vehicle of common-law maxims and presumptions which may be altered or repealed by statute, but are now protected by entrenched constitutional provisions which neither the Legislature nor the Executive may abridge. It would accordingly be improper for us to hold constitutional a system which, as Sachs J has noted, confers on creditors the power to consign the person of an impecunious debtor to prison at will and without the interposition at the crucial time of a judicial officer. #Quote by Pius Langa
South Africa quotes by Miriam Makeba
#147. I look at a stream and I see myself: a native South African, flowing irresistibly over hard obstacles until they become smooth and, one day, disappear - flowing from an origin that has been forgotten toward an end that will never be. #Quote by Miriam Makeba
South Africa quotes by Subcomandante Marcos
#148. As to whether Marcos is gay: Marcos is gay in San Francisco, black in South Africa, an Asian in Europe, a Chicano in San Ysidro, an anarchist in Spain, a Palestinian in Israel, a Mayan Indian in the streets of San Cristobal, ... a Jew in Germany, a Gypsy in Poland, a Mohawk in Quebec, a pacifist in Bosnia, a single woman on the Metro at 10pm, a peasant without land, a gang member in the slums, an unemployed worker, an unhappy student and, of course, a Zapatista in the mountains. #Quote by Subcomandante Marcos
South Africa quotes by Binyavanga Wainaina
#149. Living in South Africa and periodically coming back to Kenya, my relationship with officialdom in Kenya was just insane. #Quote by Binyavanga Wainaina
South Africa quotes by Trevor Noah
#150. Try being a white person who adopts the trappings of black culture while still living in the white community. You will face more hate and ridicule and ostracism than you can even begin to fathom. People are willing to accept you if they see you as an outsider trying to assimilate into their world. But when they see you as a fellow tribe member attempting to disavow the tribe, that is something they will never forgive. That is what happened to me in Eden Park. #Quote by Trevor Noah
South Africa quotes by Christina Stead
#151. Weak, tea-drinking, effeminate, ineffectual
masters of India, robbers of South Africa, bedevillers of all Europe. #Quote by Christina Stead
South Africa quotes by Desmond Tutu
#152. Our nation sought to rehabilitate and affirm the dignity and personhood of those who for so long had been silenced, had been turned into anonymous, marginalized ones. Now they would be able to tell their stories, they would remember, and in remembering would be acknowledged to be persons with an inalienable personhood. Our country's negotiators rejected the two extremes and opted for a "third way," a compromise between the extreme of Nuremberg trials and blanket amnesty or national amnesia. And that third way was granting amnesty to individuals in exchange for a full disclosure relating to the crime for which amnesty was being sought. It was the carrot of possible freedom in exchange for truth and the stick was, for those already in jail, the prospect of lengthy prison sentences and, for those still free, the probability of arrest and prosecution and imprisonment. The option South Africa chose raises #Quote by Desmond Tutu
South Africa quotes by James Vanderbilt
#153. Sometimes, you'll watch the news and you'll see two-year-old boys in South Africa, wearing 'Spider-Man' t-shirts. It's such a global phenomenon. #Quote by James Vanderbilt
South Africa quotes by Malcolm X
#154. They don't stand for anything different in South Africa than America stands for. The only difference is over there they preach as well as practice apartheid. America preaches freedom and practices slavery. #Quote by Malcolm X
South Africa quotes by Shehan Karunatilaka
#155. Jonny has a theory that South Africa are doomed to choke in every major tournament for the next fifty years as payment for apartheid. He also believes that England will spend centuries working off their colonial sins by performing miserably at sport. I then ask him why Australia, who wiped out generations of Aborigines, win everything in every sport, and he shuts up. #Quote by Shehan Karunatilaka
South Africa quotes by Emma Thompson
#156. But certainly in Uganda, Mozambique and South Africa, people don't really talk about sex and certainly religious leaders - some of them - up to now have been very unwilling to accept, for instance, the promotion of condom use #Quote by Emma Thompson
South Africa quotes by Anonymous
#157. it was the largest such action to ever take place in South Africa; over 1,500,000 million workers took part #Quote by Anonymous
South Africa quotes by Njovana Watts
#158. Young girls frequently report that their early sexual experiences were coerced. In a study in South Africa, 30 percent of girls report that their first sexual intercourse was forced. In rural Malawi, 55 percent of adolescent girls surveyed report that they were often forced to have sex. #Quote by Njovana Watts
South Africa quotes by Paul Boateng
#159. I am honoured to be asked to take on this role, especially as it comes at such an integral time for our relationship with South Africa and the African continent. There shall be many new challenges and opportunities ahead and I look forward to embracing them with great anticipation [on becoming the UK's high commissioner to South Africa] #Quote by Paul Boateng
South Africa quotes by Robert Lane Greene
#160. Afrikaans was the language of the white minority in South Africa, and the forced learning of it created resentment among blacks. Even so, Nelson Mandela made it a point to learn this language in prison in anticipation that it would help him lead the whole of South Africa. #Quote by Robert Lane Greene
South Africa quotes by Robert Pattinson
#161. I went to do my first big movie when I was 17. I was in South Africa for three and half months, and I was by myself. #Quote by Robert Pattinson
South Africa quotes by Andre Brink
#162. As Alan Paton said, 'Ah but your fucking land is beautiful'. #Quote by Andre Brink
South Africa quotes by Coretta Scott King
#163. Nelson Mandela sat in a South African prison for 27 years. He was nonviolent. He negotiated his way out of jail. His honor and suffering of 27 years in a South African prison is really ultimately what brought about the freedom of South Africa. That is nonviolence. #Quote by Coretta Scott King
South Africa quotes by Peter Abrahams
#164. Being born white in South Africa or anywhere in the empire and Commonwealth automatically conferred this special status. You had no problem finding a place to live, a job, trade union membership, access to social services. Being white, speaking English, you were accepted as English, entitled to all the rights of citizenship. #Quote by Peter Abrahams
South Africa quotes by Andre Hueston Mack
#165. Making wine and drinking wine is not new to African Americans and others in the Diaspora. South Africa has a three-century history in growing, harvesting and distilling grapes as wine. The entire continent of Africa has a history in wine-making. In this country, slaves cultivated the vineyards owned by Thomas Jefferson and other vintners. #Quote by Andre Hueston Mack
South Africa quotes by Mangosuthu Buthelezi
#166. South Africa is blessed to have women and men like yourselves who have little to give but give what you have with open hands and open hearts. #Quote by Mangosuthu Buthelezi
South Africa quotes by Saul Williams
#167. The role that theater has placed in enhancing consciousness and moving systems ahead. I think of what South African theater meant for the apartheid movement, for example. I think of what music has meant for so many social movements across time. #Quote by Saul Williams
South Africa quotes by Lauren Beukes
#168. Don't let anyone tell you that Apartheid has nothing to do with South Africa now. Those roots run deep and tangled and we'll be tripping over them for many generations to come. #Quote by Lauren Beukes
South Africa quotes by Mahatma Gandhi
#169. In a speech in South Africa in 1890 Mahatma Gandhi said this:

"A customer is the most important visitor on our premises. He is not dependent on us. We are dependent on him. He is not an interruption of our work. He is the purpose of it. He is not an outsider of our business. He is part of it. We are not doing him a favour by serving him. He is doing us a favour by giving us the opportunity to do so. #Quote by Mahatma Gandhi
South Africa quotes by Desmond Tutu
#170. There is no peace in South Africa. There is no peace because there is no justice. There can be no real peace and security until there is first justice enjoyed by all inhabitants of this beautiful land. The Bible knows nothing about peace without justice, for that would be crying 'peace, peace,' where there is no peace. God's Shalom, peace, involves inevitable righteousness, justice, wholesomeness, fullness of life, participation in decision making, goodness, laughter, joy, compassion, sharing, and reconciliation. #Quote by Desmond Tutu
South Africa quotes by Patrice Motsepe
#171. Only in South Africa could you have a change in government without civil war. If there wasn't the depth of love and caring among our people, this would not have happened. #Quote by Patrice Motsepe
South Africa quotes by Nelson Mandela
#172. We cannot blame other people for our troubles. We are not victims of the influx of foreign people into South Africa. We must remember that it was mainly due to the aggressive and hostile policies of the apartheid regime that the economic development of our neighbours was undermined. #Quote by Nelson Mandela
South Africa quotes by Leslie Jamison
#173. The global phenomenon of poverty tourism - or 'poorism' - has become increasingly popular during the past few years. Tourists pay to be guided through the favelas of Brazil and the shantytowns of South Africa. The recently opened Los Angeles Gang Tour carries visitors through battle-scarred territories of urban violence and deprivation. #Quote by Leslie Jamison
South Africa quotes by Claire Robertson
#174. These women who move through this landscape, holding themselves safe amid the terrible and sudden dangers, holding their limbs close to their bodies to lessen their profile, to lessen the places life can catch at them, and still maintaining movement, and still attending to men even when they elect to live a life apart from them, we can rely, he thinks, on having these women among us, rely on their courage to keep us brave. #Quote by Claire Robertson
South Africa quotes by Nelson Mandela
#175. None of us, acting alone, can achieve the success. #Quote by Nelson Mandela
South Africa quotes by Gabriel Iglesias
#176. Stand-up is not just an American thing anymore. It's global. In some places, stand-up comedy is brand new. South Africa has only had a scene for 15 years. #Quote by Gabriel Iglesias
South Africa quotes by F. W. De Klerk
#177. It was fortunate in looking back for South Africa and its entire people that Mandela and I found it possible to work together even though big strains developed between us from time to time. #Quote by F. W. De Klerk
South Africa quotes by Athol Fugard
#178. I think all of my writing life led up to the writing of 'The Train Driver' because it deals with my own inherited blindness and guilt and all of what being a white South African in South Africa during those apartheid years meant. #Quote by Athol Fugard
South Africa quotes by Damon Galgut
#179. South Africa is highly politicised; even small issues become politicised, and it becomes quite bitter. #Quote by Damon Galgut
South Africa quotes by Brian Eno
#180. I have lived in countries that were coming out of conflict: Ireland, South Africa, the Czech republic. People there are overflowing with energy. #Quote by Brian Eno
South Africa quotes by Susan Rice
#181. Well, I think by any expectation South Africa has come a tremendously long way. We've seen a society that many people thought couldn't withstand a peaceful transition to democracy without a great deal of violence, in fact, make that transition and do it in relative peace and security. #Quote by Susan Rice
South Africa quotes by John Muir
#182. I've had a great time in South America and South Africa. Indeed it now seems that on this pair of wild hot continents I've enjoyed the most fruitful year of my life. #Quote by John Muir
South Africa quotes by Tracy Kidder
#183. [Farmer] went to dozens of American and Canadian universities and colleges, preaching his O for the P [Preferential Option for the Poor] gospel, and to South Africa, where he debated a World Bank official at an international AIDS conference. "Africans must learn to curb their sexual appetites," the banker remarked, and Farmer replied, "I want to talk about other bankers, not the World Bankers, but bankers in general. My suspicion is they're not getting a lot of sex, because they spend a lot of time screwing the poor. #Quote by Tracy Kidder
South Africa quotes by Jackson Browne
#184. As far as those kinds of things, I also played at the concert to call for the release of Nelson Mandela when he was a political prisoner in South Africa. We were celebrating his 70th birthday and calling for his release. #Quote by Jackson Browne
South Africa quotes by St. Lucia
#185. The racial conversation in the States is so multifaceted and multilayered. Obviously it's not always a positive conversation, but it's just so much more detailed than it was when I was growing up in South Africa. #Quote by St. Lucia
South Africa quotes by Adam Yamey
#186. Stuff and nonsense: you must regard this deviation
from your plan as part of the adventure that you sought
when you decided embark on it in the first place. True
adventure does not follow well-trodden paths. Absence
of certainty is its essence. People, like you and I, who
choose to shun the mundane must not only expect, but
also enjoy and profit from surprises. #Quote by Adam Yamey
South Africa quotes by Lauren Beukes
#187. Traffic in Joburg is like the democratic process. Every time you think it's going to get moving and take you somewhere, you hit another jam. #Quote by Lauren Beukes
South Africa quotes by Christina Engela
#188. As a South African I honestly cannot understand how people can't see South Africa as a unique nation, untied by ties of history, bonds of suffering, victory, struggles, hope - and in more ways than I ever before thought possible - blood. #Quote by Christina Engela
South Africa quotes by Simon Hoggart
#189. Curiously, it is hard not to be a little optimistic about the future for Zimbabwe (as nobody at all calls it yet, except in political speeches). The fear is not that there will be mass slaughter of the whites, followed by their flight to South Africa and the collapse of the economy, but that the need to retain white confidence may mean that the blacks are badly disappointed. #Quote by Simon Hoggart
South Africa quotes by Tom Peters
#190. South Africa has all the tools to compete in the new global village - an eager workforce, ready to take on any challenge. #Quote by Tom Peters
South Africa quotes by Claire Robertson
#191. He has entertained the thought that his neighbours like having one of him in the district, having their own Englishman, although he will insist that he is as South African as they are. But perhaps his presence is more in the nature of a provocation, and his actions: he pretends ignorance but he knows what those spindly pink and white flowers mean to men who still punish themselves with every detail of their war, picking at it like the scab of the miniature Union Jack in the middle of the flag. #Quote by Claire Robertson
South Africa quotes by Ishmael Reed
#192. Hateful material travels the globe. A few years ago, CNN, America's Der Sturmer, ran a story about Black parents being so low down that they abandoned their children and the children had to eat rats. I was at a University in Wisconsin at the time and the mother of a student from South Africa called to see whether the story was true. She had seen it all the way over there. The story was untrue. The children lied. CNN never corrected the story. #Quote by Ishmael Reed
South Africa quotes by P. W. Botha
#193. The idea of an Afrikaner people as a cultural entity and religious group with a special language will be retained in South Africa as long as civilisation stands. #Quote by P. W. Botha
South Africa quotes by Trevor Noah
#194. Comedy is really getting quite popular in South Africa. #Quote by Trevor Noah
South Africa quotes by Richard Stanley
#195. Having spent all that time getting away from South Africa, running away from the army, I wanted very much to believe that America and England were actually as free as they were meant to be, not slipping rapidly into becoming police states like the one I'd just left. #Quote by Richard Stanley
South Africa quotes by Dave Zirin
#196. This is hardly a South African problem, of course. We are confronting nothing less than a global system of brutal misogyny. Too many men across the world see too many women as repositories of their rage, frustration, narcissism or simply their will to enact violence. #Quote by Dave Zirin
South Africa quotes by Jochen Zeitz
#197. I think South Africa has shown it can host such a big event as the World Cup, so why not hold the Olympics at some point in Africa? Maybe not just in one country but in a host of countries. #Quote by Jochen Zeitz
South Africa quotes by Harry Kalmer
#198. This is Africa, my friends … These folks do things differently." Sven Taxel, who regards himself as an expert on South Africa because he has read Wilbur Smith, Rian Malan and André Brink, tries to calm his fellow congregation members. #Quote by Harry Kalmer
South Africa quotes by T. B. Joshua
#199. I pray for my nation, South Africa. As Jesus stood in the boat and commanded the storms to be calm, I stand in the midst of the storm in my nation, South Africa and I command the storm, wind and waves to be calm, in the name of Jesus! I speak calmness to my nation, South Africa, in the name of Jesus! #Quote by T. B. Joshua
South Africa quotes by L. Ron Hubbard
#200. The insanity rate per capita in South Africa is appalling ... it is easily seen that a primary requisite in any programme of the rehabilitation of the Bantu in South Africa would be mental health ... #Quote by L. Ron Hubbard
South Africa quotes by Kim Il-sung
#201. The peoples of Asia, Africa, and Latin America have common interest and are in the position to support each other in their anti-imperialist and anti-U.S. struggle. As long as Africa and Latin America are not free. #Quote by Kim Il-sung
South Africa quotes by Ice Cube
#202. South Central is just who I am. #Quote by Ice Cube
South Africa quotes by Sunil Bharti Mittal
#203. Africa is an article of faith. I believe in this continent. #Quote by Sunil Bharti Mittal
South Africa quotes by Kimberly Eady
#204. I was raised as a Baptist in the Bible Belt of the South. Until the age of 37, I had never heard anyone teach or preach about the baptism of the Holy Ghost. Oh yes, I had heard those scriptures read, more aptly read over, and had read over them myself, but I had never heard anyone try to explain this amazing experience or even give it any credence. #Quote by Kimberly Eady
South Africa quotes by Evan Osnos
#205. There's a national ambition, a collective, in a sense, political ambition, which I think is the thing we see from far away. That's the fact that China's building roads and airports and extending its reaches out into the East China Sea and the South China Sea, and in a way that's putting it into some tension with its neighbors. #Quote by Evan Osnos
South Africa quotes by Mathias Rust
#206. I now work for a finance company in Luxembourg with projects in South America and the Caribbean. #Quote by Mathias Rust
South Africa quotes by Haile Selassie
#207. The commentators of 1963 speak, in discussing Africa, of the Monrovia States, the Brazzaville Group, the Casablanca Powers, of these and many more. Let us put an end to these terms. What we require is a single African organisation through which Africa's single voice may be heard, within which Africa's problems may be studied and resolved. #Quote by Haile Selassie
South Africa quotes by Ida B. Wells
#208. The Afro-American is thus the backbone of the South. #Quote by Ida B. Wells
South Africa quotes by James Buchan
#209. Governments of rich countries spend some $6bn of tax money a year on disaster relief and development aid overseas, while each new earthquake, famine or tidal wave can attract 1,000 aid organisations, from the United Nations Children's Fund and Oxfam to the 'Jesus Brigades' of the American south and other charitable adventurers. #Quote by James Buchan
South Africa quotes by Suzanne Palmieri
#210. Trees down south have a difference to them, a subtle, slinking movement, mile by mile- a gracefulness, a swagger. Lanky trees stretching out their wiry thin, Spanish moss-covered branches, moss that sways and beckons ... come here, come here, it says. #Quote by Suzanne Palmieri
South Africa quotes by Annie Lennox
#211. Life expectancy in many parts of Africa can be something around the age of thirty five to thirty eight. I mean you're very fortunate if you live to that age. In fact when I went to Uganda for the first time one of the things that occurred to me was that I saw very few elderly people. #Quote by Annie Lennox
South Africa quotes by Ann Patchett
#212. It is said the sesta is one of the only gifts the Europeans brought to South America, but I imagine the Brazilians could have figured out how to sleep in the afternoon without having to endure centuries of murder and enslavement. #Quote by Ann Patchett
South Africa quotes by Rachel Harris
#213. Dude, what're you waiting for?" Carlos calls. "Plant one on her."
I lift my eyes and am shocked to see Brandon is staring at my mouth. He swallows audibly and flicks his gaze to mine. the emotions darkening the soft green color are too confusing to name.
Does he want to back out?
An exhale of breath leaves Brandon's lips, almost like a laugh, and he scoots closer to me on the blanket. I twist my legs under myself, sitting tall as I face him. He cups my chin and tilts it toward him, drowning me in the now dark-green depths of his eyes, the cologne I gave him for his birthday filling my head. It's woodsy and yummy and I always loved how it smelled on the store testers, but on Brandon, it's even sexier. My eyes flutter closed, and I inhale again, this time slowly. Goose bumps prickle my arms, and my head gets fuzzy.
Brandon slides his hand down the column of my neck and brings the other up, threading his fingers through the hair at my nape. His breath fans across my cheek, and everything south of my bellybutton squeezes tight.
When his mouth first meets mine, it's hesitant, questioning. But as I move my lips with his, he quickly grows bolder, coaxing them apart.
Desire, pure and raw, electrifies my veins as his tongue sweeps my mouth. A whimpering sound springs from my chest, and instinctively, I wrap my arms around his neck, tugging him closer. Needing more. My teeth graze his full bottom lip, and I pull it, sucking on it gently.
He moans and #Quote by Rachel Harris
South Africa quotes by Taona Dumisani Chiveneko
#214. Poetic words are usually more stimulating than accurate. Taking them too seriously is a mistake. #Quote by Taona Dumisani Chiveneko
South Africa quotes by Lindsey Graham
#215. Why did we go to war? Why did we pick people from South Carolina, California, and all the places in between to go to a foreign land and risk their lives and have some die? To make sure that Saddam Hussein could do no more damage to the region or us than he has already done. #Quote by Lindsey Graham
South Africa quotes by Dominique DuBois Gilliard
#216. The church must reckon with the reality that ever since black people were stolen from Africa and trafficked to this land, they have been dehumanized, abused, criminalized, incarcerated, exploited for profit, and governed in distinctively sinister ways. This oppression has been personal, institutional, systemic, and legislative. It has been authorized and sanctioned by our local, state, and federal government. As the church, do we have the wherewithal to confront the austere reality that our national economy has been subsidized by a criminal justice system that is, and has been, predicated on the exploitation of cheap labor extracted from poor, racially profiled people of color? #Quote by Dominique DuBois Gilliard
South Africa quotes by Ta-Nehisi Coates
#217. When President Roosevelt signed Social Security into law in 1935, 65 percent of African Americans nationally and between 70 and 80 percent in the South were ineligible. #Quote by Ta-Nehisi Coates
South Africa quotes by John Ashworth
#218. Together, cotton and slavery would ensure that there would be no war. Since southerners did not want an armed conflict, it could only come as a result of northern aggression. But northerners would be insane to attempt to challenge the South militarily. Alexander Stephens, soon to become Vice-President of the Confederacy, was not an ardent secessionist. But he struck the same note as the most extreme secessionist when he declared that there was "not a flourishing village or hamlet in the North, to say nothing of their towns and cities, that does not owe its prosperity to Southern cotton". Moreover "England, with her millions of people and billions upon billions of pounds sterling, could not survive six months without it". #Quote by John Ashworth
South Africa quotes by Liya Kebede
#219. Miriam Were has made outstanding contributions to public health in the developing world. She brings basic medical services to women and children in East Africa. #Quote by Liya Kebede
South Africa quotes by James A. Michener
#220. I have often been mildly amused when I think that the great American novel was not written about New England or Chicago. It was written about a white whale in the South Pacific. #Quote by James A. Michener
South Africa quotes by Taona Dumisani Chiveneko
#221. I tell you, Professor, growing up is a full contact sport. Somewhere in our brains, foolishness and naïveté join forces with a false sense of invincibility. Together, they score own-goals against their host's interests. All this happens while that referee known as 'reason' is collapsed in a drunken stupor, unable to stop the madness. When he finally wakes up, all he can do is grant the useless penalty known as 'hindsight'. But the outcome remains unchanged. The game is lost … #Quote by Taona Dumisani Chiveneko
South Africa quotes by M.L. Stedman
#222. Point Partageuse got its name from French explorers who mapped the cape that jutted from the south-western corner of the Australian continent well before the British dash to colonize the west began in 1826. Since then, settlers had trickled north from Albany and south from the Swan River Colony, laying claim to the virgin forests in the hundreds of miles between. Cathedral-high trees were felled with handsaws to create grazing pasture; scrawny roads were hewn inch by stubborn inch by pale-skinned fellows with teams of shire horses, as this land, which had never before been scarred by man, was excoriated and burned, mapped and measured and meted out to those willing to try their luck in a hemisphere which might bring them desperation, death, or fortune beyond their dreams. #Quote by M.L. Stedman
South Africa quotes by Robin Caldwell
#223. I'm most endeared to the fact that they used gifts and talents that were taught to them by other enterprising women who looked just like them. These are gifts and talents they brought with them from Africa and other distant shores. These were gifts and talents women used to appease their owners, and make their lives comfortable. These were gifts and talents used to fuel economies and for building communities. In one book I read, nickels from the sale of chicken eggs paid the college tuition of three children. #Quote by Robin Caldwell
South Africa quotes by Ron Carlson
#224. I love whimsy. My mother was a word person, a real quipster. She was famous in the 1950s for being a contester in Utah: 25 words or less. My bicycle, our hi-fi ... in 1959, she won $15,000 from Remington-Rand for writing about a shaver. She was a farm girl from South Dakota. #Quote by Ron Carlson
South Africa quotes by Beryl Markham
#225. Hardly Africa. Not a stone has a familiar cast; the sky and the earth meet like strangers, and the touch of the sun is as dispassionate as the hand of a man who greets you with his mind on other things. Such is Molo. Its first glance presages the character I later learn - a stern country, #Quote by Beryl Markham
South Africa quotes by Richard Branson
#226. Global warming is another big area that we need to get on top of. [And] diseases in Africa, which we're also working on and seeing if we can make a difference on. And there are lots of issues that governments seem to be blind about. #Quote by Richard Branson
South Africa quotes by Herman Melville
#227. There are two places in the world where men can most effectively disappear - the city of London and the South Seas. #Quote by Herman Melville
South Africa quotes by Zora Neale Hurston
#228. ALL THESE WORDS FROM THE SELLER, BUT NOT ONE WORD FROM THE SOLD.""

"All these words from the seller, but not one word from the sold. The Kings and Captains whose words moved ships. But not one word from the cargo. The thoughts of the "black ivory," the "coin of Africa," had no market value. Africa's ambassadors to the New World have come and worked and died, and left their spoor, but no recorded thought. #Quote by Zora Neale Hurston
South Africa quotes by Chinua Achebe
#229. She was sensitive enough and intelligent enough to understand, and her literary education could not but have sharpened her perception of the evidence before her eyes: that in the absurd raffle-draw that apportioned the destinies of post-colonial African societies two people starting off even as identical twins in the morning might quiet easily find themselves in the evening one as President shitting on the heads of the people and the other a nightman carrying the people's shit in buckets on his head. #Quote by Chinua Achebe
South Africa quotes by Muammar Al-Gaddafi
#230. There are serious mistakes, among them the one saying that Jesus came as a messenger for other people other than the sons of Israel ... Christianity is not a faith for people in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas. Other people who are not sons of Israel have nothing to do with that religion ... It is a mistake that another religion exists alongside Islam. There is only one religion which is Islam after Mohammed ... All those believers who do not follow Islam are losers. #Quote by Muammar Al-Gaddafi
South Africa quotes by Conan O'Brien
#231. North Korea threatened to launch a missile at South Korea. North Korea backed down after South Korea threatened to launch a sequel to 'Gangnam Style.' #Quote by Conan O'Brien
South Africa quotes by Aurel Stein
#232. I sometimes doubt whether even the friends whose kind thoughts turned downwards me that evening from the distant South and West could realize how cheerful is the recollection of the Christmas spent in the solitude and cold of the desert. #Quote by Aurel Stein
South Africa quotes by Wallace Stevens
#233. Two things of opposite natures seem to depend
On on another, as Logos depends
On Eros, day on night, the imagined
On the real. This is the origin of change.
Winter and spring, cold copulars, embrace
And forth the particulars of rapture come.
Music falls on the silence like a sense
A passion that we feel, not understand.
Morning and afternoon are clasped together
And North and South are an intrinsic couple
And sun and rain a plural, like two lovers
That walk away together as one in the greenest body. #Quote by Wallace Stevens
South Africa quotes by Josette Sheeran
#234. If any good comes out of the current famine in the Horn of Africa - amidst the pictures of mothers carrying dying babies at their shrivelled breasts and hollow-eyed children with swollen bellies and matchstick limbs - it will be galvanising the world on the need to ensure access to nutritious food for the world's most vulnerable people. #Quote by Josette Sheeran
South Africa quotes by G. Edward Griffin
#235. [ ... ] it is generally accepted that the Civil War was fought over the issue of slavery. That, at best, is a half-truth. Slavery was an issue, but the primary force for war was a clash between the economic interests of the North and the South. Even the issue of slavery itself was based on economics. #Quote by G. Edward Griffin
South Africa quotes by Thomas Piketty
#236. one would expect to see a flow of investments in Africa from other countries, especially China and other Asian nations. #Quote by Thomas Piketty
South Africa quotes by Scott Porter
#237. If any of you have ever lived down south of the Mason-Dixon line, you know that late September still means summer heat. #Quote by Scott Porter
South Africa quotes by Peter Allison
#238. She asked another question: "What does it matter if the rhinos die out? Is it really important that they are saved?"
This would normally have riled me ... but I had come to think of her as Dr. Spock from Star Trek - an emotionless, purely logical creature, at least with regards to her feelings for animals. Like Spock, though, I knew there were one or two things that stirred her, so I gave an honest reply.
" ... to be honest, it doesn't matter. No economy will suffer, nobody will go hungry, no diseases will be spawned. Yet there will never be a way to place a value on what we have lost. Future children will see rhinos only in books and wonder how we let them go so easily. It would be like lighting a fire in the Louvre and watching the Mona Lisa burn. Most people would think 'What a pity' and leave it at that while only a few wept #Quote by Peter Allison
South Africa quotes by George Webb
#239. In those days the Pimas always had plenty.

The Papagos who lived in the desert south of us did not have a river like the Gila to water their fields, and their food was never plentiful.

During the summer months, some of them would come to our village, with cactus syrup put up in little ollas, and salt, and we would give them beans and corn in exchange.

The only salt we had came from the Papagos. At a certain time of the year they would go down to the ocean and get the salt from the shore where the tide left the water to dry. It was a kind of ceremony with them.

They always felt that we gave them more than they could give us, although to get the salt they had walked hundreds of miles to the ocean and back. And so they would stay with us for a few days and help us harvest our wheat. #Quote by George Webb
