Photography quotes by Joe McNally
#1. Technology has eliminated the basement darkroom and the whole notion of photography as an intense labor of love for obsessives and replaced them with a sense of immediacy and instant gratification. #Quote by Joe McNally
Photography quotes by Alfred Eisenstaedt
#2. I don't use an exposure meter. My personal advice is: Spend the money you would put into such an instrument for film. Buy yards of film, miles of it. Buy all the film you can get your hands on. And then experiment with it.That is the only way to be successful in photography. Test, try, experiment, feel your way along. It is the experience, not technique, which counts in camera work first of all. If you get the feel of photography, you can take fifteen pictures while one of your opponents is trying out his exposure meter. #Quote by Alfred Eisenstaedt
Photography quotes by James Nachtwey
#3. It is very hard to say where you're going until you get there. That kind of thing is based very much on instinct. As a photographer, one of the most important lessons I have learnt is that you have to learn to listen to and trust your own instinct. It has helped to guide me - this far at least. #Quote by James Nachtwey

Photography quotes by Henri Cartier-Bresson
#10. The simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event as well as the precise organization of forms which gives that event its proper expression ... In photography, the smallest thing can be a great subject. The little human detail can become a leitmotif. #Quote by Henri Cartier-Bresson
Photography quotes by William Albert Allard
#11. What's really important is to simplify. The work of most photographers would be improved immensely if they could do one thing: get rid of the extraneous. If you strive for simplicity, you are more likely to reach the viewer. #Quote by William Albert Allard

Photography quotes by Imogen Cunningham
#13. There are too many people studying it [photography] now who are never going to make it. You can't give them a formula for making it. You have to have it in you first, you don't learn it. The seeing eye is the important thing. #Quote by Imogen Cunningham

#18. A good photograph is one that communicates a fact, touches the heart and leaves the viewer a changed person for having seen it. It is, in a word, effective. #Quote by Irving Penn
Photography quotes by David DuChemin
#19. It's the difference between your wife's passport photograph and the portraits you took when you got
engaged. Both may have been created with similar technology, but what stands in that great gulf between them are the passion you have for your wife, the knowledge you have of her personality, and your willingness to use your craft, time, and energy to express that. One says, "She looks like this." The other says, "This is who she is to me. It's how I feel about her. See how amazing she is? #Quote by David DuChemin
Photography quotes by Garry Winogrand
#20. I like to think of photographing as a two-way act of respect. Respect for the medium, by letting it do what it does best, describe. And respect for the subject, by describing it as it is. A photograph must be responsible to both. #Quote by Garry Winogrand
Photography quotes by Roland Barthes
#21. One of the marks of our world is perhaps this reversal: we live according to a generalized image-repertoire. Consider the United Sates, where everything is transformed into images: only images exist and are produced and are consumes ... Such a reversal necessarily raises the ethical question: not that the image is immoral, irreligious, or diabolic (as some have declared it, upon the advent of the Photograph), but because, when generalized, it completely de-realizes the human world of conflicts and desires, under cover of illustrating it. #Quote by Roland Barthes
Photography quotes by Mel Bochner
#22. In 1967 there was no place for photography in a contemporary art gallery. It was almost impossible to get an art dealer to look at, let alone exhibit, anything photographic. #Quote by Mel Bochner
Photography quotes by Hank Bracker
#23. Weston, having been born in Chicago, was raised with typical, well-grounded, mid-western values. On his 16th birthday, his father gave him a Kodak camera with which he started what would become his lifetime vocation. During the summer of 1908, Weston met Flora May Chandler, a schoolteacher who was seven years older than he was. The following year the couple married and in time they had four sons.
Weston and his family moved to Southern California and opened a portrait studio on Brand Boulevard, in the artsy section of Glendale, California, called Tropico. His artistic skills soon became apparent and he became well known for his portraits of famous people, such as Carl Sandburg and Max Eastman. In the autumn of 1913, hearing of his work, Margrethe Mather, a photographer from Los Angeles, came to his studio, where Weston asked her to be his studio assistant. It didn't take long before the two developed a passionate, intimate relationship. Both Weston and Mather became active in the growing bohemian cultural scene in Los Angeles. She was extremely outgoing and artistic in a most flamboyant way. Her bohemian sexual values were new to Weston's conventional thinking, but Mather excited him and presented him with a new outlook that he found enticing. Mather was beautiful, and being bisexual and having been a high-class prostitute, was delightfully worldly. Mather's uninhibited lifestyle became irresistible to Weston and her photography took him into a new and exciting art form. #Quote by Hank Bracker
Photography quotes by Emmet Gowin
#24. It might take us a lifetime to find out what it is we need to say. Most of us fall into where our feelings are headed while we're quite young. But the beauty of all this uncertainty would be that in the process of exhausting all the possibilities, we might actually stumble unconsciously into the recognition of something that's useful to us, that speaks to a deep need within ourselves. At the same time, I like to think that in order for any of us to really do anything new, we can't know exactly what it is we are doing. #Quote by Emmet Gowin
Photography quotes by Rene Burri
#25. To some extent, the cult surrounding black-and-white photography is based on nostalgia. #Quote by Rene Burri
Photography quotes by Sebastiao Salgado
#26. When I was just starting out, I met Cartier-Bresson. He wasn't young in age but, in his mind, he was the youngest person I'd ever met. He told me it was necessary to trust my instincts, be inside my work, and set aside my ego. In the end, my photography turned out very different to his, but I believe we were coming from the same place. #Quote by Sebastiao Salgado
Photography quotes by Ruth Bernhard
#27. My quest, through the magic of light and shadow, is to isolate, to simplify, and to give emphasis to form with the greatest clarity. #Quote by Ruth Bernhard
Photography quotes by Wynn Bullock
#28. Searching is everything - going beyond what you know. And the test of the search is really in the things themselves, the things you seek to understand. What is important is not what you think about them, but how they enlarge you. #Quote by Wynn Bullock
Photography quotes by Jean Baudrillard
#29. Photography is our exorcism. Primitive society had its masks, bourgeois society its mirrors. We have our images. #Quote by Jean Baudrillard
Photography quotes by Jacques-Henri Lartigue

Photography quotes by Robert Mapplethorpe
#31. I went into photography because it seemed like the perfect vehicle for commenting on the madness of today's existence. #Quote by Robert Mapplethorpe
Photography quotes by Anonymous
#32. He sought a way to preserve the past. John Hershel was one of the founders of a new form of time travel ... a means to capture light and memories. He actually coined a word for it ... photography. When you think about it, photography is a form of time travel. This man is staring at us from across the centuries, a ghost preserved by light. #Quote by Anonymous
Photography quotes by Sebastiao Salgado
#33. I'm not an artist. An artist makes an object. Me, it's not an object, I work in history, I'm a storyteller. #Quote by Sebastiao Salgado
Photography quotes by Julia Margaret Cameron
#34. My aspirations are to ennoble Photography and to secure for it the character and uses of High Art by combining the real and Ideal and sacrificing nothing of the Truth by all possible devotion to Poetry and beauty. #Quote by Julia Margaret Cameron
Photography quotes by Henri Cartier-Bresson
#35. The intensive use of photographs by mass media lays ever fresh responsibilities upon the photographer. We have to acknowledge the existence of a chasm between the economic needs of our consumer society and the requirements of those who bear witness to this epoch. This affects us all, particularly the younger generations of photographers. We must take greater care than ever not to allow ourselves to be separated from the real world and from humanity. #Quote by Henri Cartier-Bresson
Photography quotes by Annette Messager
#36. [Love] can be found in making little dresses for stuffed birds, or in a garden of tenderness like I have done - mixing writing, photography, and real spaces. There are all kinds of acts of love. #Quote by Annette Messager
Photography quotes by Susan Sontag
#37. Although photography generates works that can be called art-it requires subjectivity, it can lie, it gives aesthetic pleasure-photography is not, to begin with, an art form at all. Like language, it is a medium in which works of art (among other things) are made. #Quote by Susan Sontag
Photography quotes by Gianni Versace
#38. I love photography and art-directing is something that I really would enjoy to do. #Quote by Gianni Versace
Photography quotes by Ansel Adams
#39. Photography is more than a medium for factual communication of ideas. It is a creative art. #Quote by Ansel Adams
Photography quotes by Aaron Siskind
#40. Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving. What you have caught on film is captured forever ... it remembers little things, long after you have forgotten everything. #Quote by Aaron Siskind
Photography quotes by Chuck Close
#41. Like any corporation, I have the benefit of the brainpower of everyone who is working for me. It all ends up being my work, the corporate me, but everyone extends ideas and comes up with suggestions. #Quote by Chuck Close
Photography quotes by Bruce Barnbaum
#42. I'd really rather leave it to others to say what they see in it and to see if I've put something into my photographs beyond a mere recording. Yes, I've chosen the camera position, how I'm going to print the negative, the angel of the lens, what I'm going to include and exclude in the composition, so on and so forth. But, I'm still photographing a work of art, and I would rather leave it to others to comment on my work, as I just left it to you. #Quote by Bruce Barnbaum
Photography quotes by Rennie Ellis
#43. Without my photography life would be boring. Photography adds an extra dimension to my life. Somehow it confirms my place in the world #Quote by Rennie Ellis
Photography quotes by Wayne Gerard Trotman
#44. Whosoever possesses a camera should never know boredom. #Quote by Wayne Gerard Trotman
Photography quotes by Mario Testino
#45. I like getting my ideas from the things of now. I am very conscious of the moment, of images that belong to this moment instead of another period. Fashion is really a reflection of our lives. You see women today and they don't do their hair up; they all wear their hair undone. So you have to reflect that in your photography . #Quote by Mario Testino
Photography quotes by Leonard Nimoy
#46. Essentially, in photography, I think on two levels: one emotional and the other technical. The emotional impact has to do with looking for something dramatic happening in the photograph, something that reaches out and touches somebody in some way. And the technical is having to do with composition and framing - light and dark, light and shadow. #Quote by Leonard Nimoy
Photography quotes by Joe McNally
#47. Jay Maisel always says to bring your camera, 'cause it's tough to take a picture without it. Pursuant to the above aforementioned piece of the rule book, subset three, clause A, paragraph four would be…use the camera.
Put it to your eye. You never know. There are lots of reasons, some of them even good, to just leave it on your shoulder or in your bag. Wrong lens. Wrong light. Aaahhh, it's not that great, what am I gonna do with it anyway? I'll have to put my coffee down. I'll just delete it later, why bother? Lots of reasons not to take the dive into the eyepiece and once again try to sort out the world into an effective rectangle.
It's almost always worth it to take a look. #Quote by Joe McNally
Photography quotes by David Hockney
#48. I've finally figured out what's wrong with photography. It's a one-eyed man looking through a little 'ole. Now, how much reality can there be in that? #Quote by David Hockney
Photography quotes by Susan Sontag
#49. The highest vocation of photography is to explain man to man. #Quote by Susan Sontag
Photography quotes by Jay Maisel
#50. You have to have a lot of 'overage' so that your failures aren't the only thing you come home with. You've got to have a lot of things that were magnificent failures, but you want some magnificent successes. #Quote by Jay Maisel
Photography quotes by Michelangelo Antonioni
#51. We know that behind every image revealed there is another image more faithful to reality, and in the back of that image there is another, and yet another behind the last one, and so on, up to the true image of that absolute, mysterious reality that no one will ever see. #Quote by Michelangelo Antonioni
Photography quotes by Andreas Feininger
#52. It's nothing but a matter of seeing, thinking, and interest. That's what makes a good photograph. And then rejecting anything that would be bad for the picture. The wrong light, the wrong background, time and so on. Just don't do it, not matter how beautiful the subject is. #Quote by Andreas Feininger
Photography quotes by Henri Cartier-Bresson
#53. One has to tiptoe lightly and steal up to one's quarry; you don't swish the water when you are fishing. #Quote by Henri Cartier-Bresson
Photography quotes by John Sexton
#54. For me the printing process is part of the magic of photography. It's that magic that can be exciting, disappointing, rewarding and frustrating all in the same few moments in the darkroom. #Quote by John Sexton
Photography quotes by Sebastiao Salgado
#55. For me, art is such a wide concept - anything can be art. #Quote by Sebastiao Salgado
Photography quotes by Jay Maisel

#57. Photography is a Passion Not a Hobby! #Quote by Ilyass Azaryouh
Photography quotes by Ansel Adams
#58. A photograph is not an accident - it is a concept. #Quote by Ansel Adams
Photography quotes by Clive Barker
#59. Every day is a writing day. I get to my desk between 8 and 8:30 in the morning and then work through until 6pm, and then normally I'll take up whatever will be happening in the evening, usually painting or photography.
I do about four drafts total. I do handwritten drafts because I don't type and I have no wish to type. I mean, I know how to type, but I have no interest in putting the words down that way.
Maybe that's because I'm an artist and because I've always used a pen and so there's a sort of natural feel to it.
I don't know how familiar you are with Blake's illuminated texts, but you know very often he'll literally make words flower. It's really this glorious thing in bringing words and pictures into the same place, the same space. #Quote by Clive Barker
Photography quotes by Alex Webb
#60. Photograph because you love doing it, because you absolutely have to do it, because the chief reward is going to be the process of doing it. Other rewards - recognition, financial remuneration - come to so few and are so fleeting ... Take photography on as a passion, not a career. #Quote by Alex Webb
Photography quotes by Ernst Haas
#61. You become things, you become an atmosphere, and if you become it, which means you incorporate it within you, you can also give it back. You can put this feeling into a picture. A painter can do it. And a musician can do it and I think a photographer can do that too and that I would call the dreaming with open eyes. #Quote by Ernst Haas
Photography quotes by Jerome Liebling
#62. These days it seems that physical truth can easily be rearranged, rethought, or re-created outright. Any image can be made pristine, all the warts can be removed. But returning to the source of a thing - the real source - means the photographer has to watch, dig, listen for voices, sniff the smells, and have many doubts. My life in photography has been lived as a skeptic. #Quote by Jerome Liebling
Photography quotes by Robert Breault
#63. It pleases me to take amateur photographs of my garden, and it pleases my garden to make my photographs look professional. #Quote by Robert Breault
Photography quotes by Jay Maisel
#64. If you can capture the element of surprise, you're way ahead of the game. #Quote by Jay Maisel
Photography quotes by Aaron Siskind

Photography quotes by Bruce Pavitt
#66. I had no real photography experience, thankfully. I consciously took a lot of crowd shots. I was influenced by Seattle photographer Charles Peterson, who always seemed to incorporate fans in his live band shots. #Quote by Bruce Pavitt
Photography quotes by Sam Abell
#67. I had luck, but I worked hard and I suffered. It's not just photography I'm talking about. It's about whatever dream you want it to be. #Quote by Sam Abell
Photography quotes by Stephen Sprouse
#68. Then I moved down to the Bowery to this building where Debbie Harry lived. It was there that I started combining some clothes for her and continued doing the art and photography. #Quote by Stephen Sprouse
Photography quotes by Ansel Adams
#69. Photography is an investigation of both the outer and the inner worlds. The first experiences with the camera involve looking at the world beyond the lens, trusting the instrument will 'capture' something 'seen.' The terms shoot and take are not accidental; they represent an attitude of conquest and appropriation. Only when the photographer grows into perception and creative impulse does the term make define a condition of empathy between the external and the internal events. #Quote by Ansel Adams
Photography quotes by Barbara Kingsolver
#70. Plants do everything animals do, but slowly. They migrate, communicate, deceive, stalk their food and, with an ostentation of styles and perfumes to put the animal kingdom to shame, they make love. It's just that catching them in flagrante delicto might require time-lapse photography. #Quote by Barbara Kingsolver
Photography quotes by Garry Winogrand
#71. Photos have no narrative content. They only describe light on surface. #Quote by Garry Winogrand
Photography quotes by Edward Weston
#72. I see no reason for recording the obvious. #Quote by Edward Weston
Photography quotes by Harry Callahan
#73. I do believe strongly in photography and hope by following it intuitively that when the photographs are looked at they will touch the spirit in people. #Quote by Harry Callahan
Photography quotes by Anton Corbijn
#74. My photography is very European. In America, I always get the sense that people are comforted by understanding what they're looking at. Photography's quite clear here [in the U.S.], it's very well-explained. My photography's perhaps not as well-explained. #Quote by Anton Corbijn
Photography quotes by Annie O'Reilly
#75. A photograph is the best split-second decision one can make! #Quote by Annie O'Reilly
Photography quotes by Robert Adams
#76. The job of the photographer, in my view, is not to catalogue indisputable fact but to try to be coherent about intuition and hope. This is not to say that he is unconcerned with the truth. #Quote by Robert Adams
Photography quotes by Edvard Munch
#77. Photography is an art which touches and grips one's own heart's blood. #Quote by Edvard Munch
Photography quotes by Mary Ellen Mark
#78. I'm staying with film, and with silver prints, and no Photoshop. That's the way I learned photography: You make your picture in the camera. Now, so much is made in the computer ... I'm not anti-digital; I just think, for me, film works better. #Quote by Mary Ellen Mark
Photography quotes by Marcel Proust
#79. Photography is the product of complete alienation. #Quote by Marcel Proust
Photography quotes by Bill Brandt
#80. Photographers should follow their own judgment, and not the fads and dictates of others. Photography is still a very new medium and everything is allowed and everything should be tried and dared ... Photography has no rules. It is not a sport. It is the result which counts, no matter how it was achieved. #Quote by Bill Brandt
Photography quotes by Steven Soderbergh
#81. Maybe I'll paint, do photography, just something else. I can see that. #Quote by Steven Soderbergh
Photography quotes by William Klein
#82. The New York book was a visual diary and it was also kind of personal newspaper. I wanted it to look like the news. I didn't relate to European photography. It was too poetic and anecdotal for me ... the kinetic quality of new york, the kids, dirt, madness - I tried to find a photographic style that would come close to it. So I would be grainy and contrasted and black. Id crop, blur, play with the negatives. I didn't see clean technique being right for New York. I could imagine my pictures lying in the gutter like the New York Daily News. #Quote by William Klein
Photography quotes by Deejay Kapil
#83. It is so gratifying to tell so many stories my eye can romance with, that i become the stories.
They shall live on after me, and in that way it makes me immortal #Quote by Deejay Kapil
Photography quotes by Ruth Bernhard
#84. Light is my inspiration, my paint and brush. It is as vital as the model herself. Profoundly significant, it caresses the essential superlative curves and lines. Light I acknowledge as the energy upon which all life on this planet depends. #Quote by Ruth Bernhard
Photography quotes by Walker Evans
#85. I work rather blindly. I have a theory that seems to work with me that some of the best things you ever do sort of come through you. You don't know where you get the impetus and response to what's before your eyes. #Quote by Walker Evans
Photography quotes by Jamie Chung
#86. I love photography, I love food, and I love traveling, and to put those three things together would just be the ultimate dream. #Quote by Jamie Chung

#88. Anthropology ... has always been highly dependent upon photography ... As the use of still photography - and moving pictures - has become increasingly essential as a part of anthropological methods, the need for photographers with a disciplined knowledge of anthropology and for anthropologists with training in photography has increased. We expect that in the near future sophisticated training in photography will be a requirement for all anthropologists. (1962) #Quote by Margaret Mead
Photography quotes by Henri Cartier-Bresson

Photography quotes by Emmet Gowin
#90. The authentic thing is to follow your heart, your instincts, your emotions. If you located yourself in an idea, your life would be lived very sadly. #Quote by Emmet Gowin
Photography quotes by Hans Bellmer
#91. Perhaps there was more authentic danger in the photography that was banned - why shouldn't one be able to produce it? But this new enthusiasm finally caused us some trouble, and it suffices to say, if I remember correctly, that it was in this way that my thoughts turned to the young maidens. #Quote by Hans Bellmer
Photography quotes by Eliot Porter
#92. Sometimes you can tell a large story with a tiny subject. #Quote by Eliot Porter

Photography quotes by Karl Lagerfeld
#95. I'm not a social person. Not that I'm not at ease. I'm pretty good, but it bores me. Not the people, but the whole thing. What for? It's not very productive. I only want to do what I have to do: fashion, photography, books. And that's all. #Quote by Karl Lagerfeld
Photography quotes by Nobuyoshi Araki

Photography quotes by Peter Beard
#97. I've never gotten a release from any person. I'm not a businessman; I'm on the side of common sense. Releases ruin the atmosphere of photography. #Quote by Peter Beard

Photography quotes by Ivan Klima
#105. A picture was a motionless record of motion. An arrested representation of life. A picture was the kiss of death pretending to possess immutability. #Quote by Ivan Klima
Photography quotes by Alex Webb
#106. I have always felt that a lot of the most interesting work, not just mine but other people's, falls into [the] nether area, somewhere between the worlds of documentary and photojournalism (two very vague words) and the world of art. I think a lot of street photography falls into this nether area. #Quote by Alex Webb

Photography quotes by Ruth E. Carter
#112. My favorite part about costume designing is the artistry of the job. You meet with a director and a visionary to discuss ideas. You research the characters and figure out the components of their look through your own vision. You create a color palette for a film, television or stage medium and discuss it with the director of photography who then lights your colored subjects. #Quote by Ruth E. Carter
Photography quotes by Lee Friedlander

Photography quotes by Kate Morton
#118. It is a cruel, ironical art, photography. The dragging of captured moments into the future; moments that should have been allowed to be evaporate into the past; should exist only in memories, glimpsed through the fog of events that came after. Photographs force us to see people before their future weighed them down ... #Quote by Kate Morton

#119. Photography is a life of learning. That's all I want from photography. I don't want the money. I don't need the fame. I don't need the admiration. I'd like all of those things, but I don't need them. Because what I get from photographing is learning. I have spent my life learning by looking through a lens. #Quote by Rondal Partridge
Photography quotes by Mason Cooley
#120. Photography knows how to authenticate its misrepresentations. #Quote by Mason Cooley
Photography quotes by Sam Abell
#121. Photography, alone of the arts, seems perfected to serve the desire humans have for a moment - this very moment - to stay. #Quote by Sam Abell
Photography quotes by Susan Sontag
#122. Travel becomes a strategy for accumulating photographs. #Quote by Susan Sontag
Photography quotes by Frans Lanting
#123. It's up to us as photographers to give voice to the natural world. #Quote by Frans Lanting
Photography quotes by Arthur C. Clarke
#124. Much of the colony's musical experimenting was, quite consciously, concerned with what might be called "time span." What was the briefest note that the mind could grasp - or the longest that it could tolerate without boredom? Could the result be varied by conditioning or by the use of appropriate orchestration? Such problems were discussed endlessly, and the arguments were not purely academic. They had resulted in some extremely interesting compositions. But it was in the art of the cartoon film, with its limitless possibilities, that New Athens had made its most successful experiments. The hundred years since the time of Disney had still left much undone in this most flexible of all mediums. On the purely realistic side, results could be produced indistinguishable from actual photography - much to the contempt of those who were developing the cartoon along abstract lines. #Quote by Arthur C. Clarke
Photography quotes by Rebecca McNutt
#125. People always say that digital cameras are much more stable than film cameras, but the truth is that digital cameras, or any kind of digital technology, is one of the most unstable things in the world. A film camera can last decades if you know how to look after it, but digital things can break down instantly. A violent storm, a nuclear bomb, even something as minor as a cracked screen or the releasing of newer models, can make a digital product just a block of useless metal. #Quote by Rebecca McNutt
Photography quotes by Susan Sontag
#126. Photography is an elegiac art, a twilight art. Most subjects photographed are, just by virtue of being photographed, touched with pathos. #Quote by Susan Sontag
Photography quotes by Vincent Laforet
#127. Stay open to as many new tools and think of as many ways you can to utilize them to your advantage. This not only includes equipment and hardware but also software or apps like Sun Seeker and social media outlets like Instagram and Twitter to build community. #Quote by Vincent Laforet
Photography quotes by Alfred Eisenstaedt
#128. I seldom think when I take a picture. My eyes and fingers react - click. But first, it's most important to decide on the angle at which your photograph is to be taken. #Quote by Alfred Eisenstaedt
Photography quotes by Lee Friedlander
#130. I take more to the subject than to my ideas about it. I am not interested in any idea I have had, the subject is so demanding and so important. #Quote by Lee Friedlander
Photography quotes by Clyde Butcher
#131. Only in black and white can I see the design and textures. I don't consider color photography art. Black and white is an interpretation. Color is a duplication. #Quote by Clyde Butcher
Photography quotes by Anonymous
#132. An artist's job is to inspire, from the Latin inspirare: to breathe into. The primary function of art is to inspire new thought shaped by emotions using the creative mediums we master - be it painting, music, design, craft, or photography. #Quote by Anonymous
Photography quotes by Albert Hammond, Jr.
#133. Egon Schiele is my favorite painter. There's just something about art - photography, painting, music, plays - whatever you see, sometimes there's a gut reaction that's more important or more visceral than what your brain is thinking about. You can't explain that reaction. It's like what happens when you fall in love. #Quote by Albert Hammond, Jr.
Photography quotes by John Thai
#134. Photography is never real, it's merely one of many ways of telling the truth. #Quote by John Thai
Photography quotes by Seth Godin
#135. Art is what we call ... the thing an artist does.
It's not the medium or the oil or the price or whether it hangs on a wall or you eat it. What matters, what makes it art, is that the person who made it overcame the resistance, ignored the voice of doubt and made something worth making. Something risky. Something human.
Art is not in the ... eye of the beholder. It's in the soul of the artist. #Quote by Seth Godin
Photography quotes by Chase Jarvis
#136. It's really a great asset to be willing to fail and blow it, so to speak, and to be okay with just making stuff, sharing it and getting feedback. #Quote by Chase Jarvis
Photography quotes by Martin Parr
#137. I do read many of the photography magazines from the U.K. and abroad. #Quote by Martin Parr
Photography quotes by Scott Kelby
#138. As far as digital technology has come, there's still one thing that digital cameras won't do: give you perfect color every time. In fact, if they gave us perfect color 50% of the time, that would be incredible, but unfortunately every digital camera (and every scanner that captures traditional photos) sneaks in some kind of color cast in your image. Generally, it's a red cast, but depending on the camera, it could be blue. Either way, you can be pretty sure-there's a cast. #Quote by Scott Kelby
Photography quotes by Philip-Lorca DiCorcia
#139. There's a reductiveness to photography, of course - in the framing of reality and the exclusion of chunks of it (the rest of the world, in fact). It's almost as if the act of photography bears some relationship to how we consciously manage the uncontrollable set of possibilities that exist in life. #Quote by Philip-Lorca DiCorcia
Photography quotes by Arno Rafael Minkkinen
#140. If it can happen in your mind, it can happen in your camera #Quote by Arno Rafael Minkkinen
Photography quotes by David Hockney
#141. Because I'm interested in depiction, representation, therefore you're interested in photography. You don't ignore it. #Quote by David Hockney
Photography quotes by Christian Metz
#142. I would say that the off-frame effect in photography results from a singular and definitive cutting-off which figures castration and is figured by the click of the shutter. #Quote by Christian Metz
Photography quotes by Kelly E. Lindner
#143. Writing, photography...art. It's all about what's in focus. #Quote by Kelly E. Lindner
Photography quotes by Andreas Feininger
#144. Experience has shown that the more fascinating the subject, the less observant the photographer. #Quote by Andreas Feininger
Photography quotes by Louis Fabian Bachrach, Jr.
#145. In the business of portrait photography, one must combine the artist and the craftsman. #Quote by Louis Fabian Bachrach, Jr.
Photography quotes by Sean Durkin
#146. I was really into writing short fiction and also photography when I was a kid. #Quote by Sean Durkin
Photography quotes by Friedrich Nietzsche
#147. Art is the highest task and the proper metaphysical activity of this life. #Quote by Friedrich Nietzsche
Photography quotes by James Nachtwey
#148. For me, the strength of photography lies in its ability to evoke humanity. If war is an attempt to negate humanity, then photography can be perceived as the opposite of war. #Quote by James Nachtwey
Photography quotes by Donald Lambert
#149. My wife convinced me to try doing the restorations digitally. I thought I could learn the photo editing software over the Thanksgiving weekend. It took me until May of the next year before I sold anything I did with it. #Quote by Donald Lambert
Photography quotes by Chuck Close
#150. A face is a road map of someone's life. Without any need to amplify that or draw attention to it, there's a great deal that's communicated about who this person is and what their life experiences have been. #Quote by Chuck Close
Photography quotes by Henri Cartier-Bresson
#151. I believe that, through the act of living, the discovery of oneself is made concurrently with the discovery of the world around us, which can mold us, but which can also be affected by us. A balance must be established between these two worlds - the one inside us and the one outside us. #Quote by Henri Cartier-Bresson
Photography quotes by Garry Winogrand
#152. There is no special way a photograph should look. #Quote by Garry Winogrand
Photography quotes by Jean Francois Lyotard
#153. One knows that frontal and/or profile photography is torn to pieces ... Inversely, what remains of the photograph must be seen as a fragment coming to fill a gap in the drawing. #Quote by Jean Francois Lyotard
Photography quotes by Henri Cartier-Bresson
#154. We must avoid however, snapping away, shooting quickly and without thought, overloading ourselves with unnecessary images that clutter our memory and diminish the clarity of the whole. #Quote by Henri Cartier-Bresson
Photography quotes by Ernst Haas
#155. Beware of color theories. Theories in color photography are dangerous. The plain fact that there are so many of them proves my point. #Quote by Ernst Haas
Photography quotes by Leroy Chiao
#156. One of my challenges was to try to photograph the Great Wall of China. And I did actually take some photos, but it was hard to discern the wall with the naked eye. #Quote by Leroy Chiao
Photography quotes by Carl Andre
#157. I'm afraid we get a great deal of our exposure to art through magazines and through slides and I think this is dreadful, this is anti-art because art is direct experience with something in the world and photography is just a rumor, a kind of pornography of art. #Quote by Carl Andre
Photography quotes by Sally Mann
#158. The whole nature of photography has changed with the advent of a camera in everybody's hand. #Quote by Sally Mann
Photography quotes by Madonna Ciccone
#159. When we take a picture, we have a negative. We put the right solution on it and, suddenly, the picture comes to life. So what do we do? We take the negative and turn it into a positive. #Quote by Madonna Ciccone
Photography quotes by Roland Barthes
#160. The Photograph is an extended, loaded evidence - as if it caricatured not the figure of what it represents (quite the converse) but its very existence ... The Photograph then becomes a bizarre (i)medium(i), a new form of hallucination: false on the level of perception, true on the level of time: a temporal hallucination, so to speak, a modest (o)shared(i) hallucination (on the one hand 'it is not there,' on the other 'but it has indeed been'): a mad image, chafed by reality. #Quote by Roland Barthes
Photography quotes by Neeraj Agnihotri
#161. A camera is just a medium to capture what you have in your vision, and vision is something that cannot be bought. #Quote by Neeraj Agnihotri
Photography quotes by Susan Sontag
#162. Instead of just recording reality, photographs have become the norm for the way things appear to us, thereby changing the very idea of reality and of realism. #Quote by Susan Sontag
Photography quotes by Sarah Charlesworth
#163. I don't think of myself as a photographer. I've engaged questions regarding photography's role in culture ... but it is an engagement with a problem rather than a medium. #Quote by Sarah Charlesworth
Photography quotes by S.S. Lorenzo
#164. A Photographer's Poem

To take a photograph is to learn new steps
Like a toddler's first walk from start to end
Visualize a dream, a paradigm, a theme
It could be about anywhere, anyone, any moment or anything
Let that sink in until your eyes see clearly
What image you cease to create to preserve in dearly
With a camera you take the picture in mind
A photographer's mistake is to leave it behind
Take it wherever a journey is to take place
There will always be something that comes across your ways #Quote by S.S. Lorenzo
Photography quotes by Aaron Siskind
#165. The business of making a photograph may be said in simple terms to consist of three elements: the objective world (whose permanent condition is change and disorder), the sheet of paper on which the picture will be realized, and the experience which brings them together. #Quote by Aaron Siskind
Photography quotes by Paul Caponigro
#166. Photography is not easy. You know it takes a painter or a sculpture or a musician years to perfect their technique. Then they're free to make an expression in a matter of moments. It takes moments for a photographer to perfect his technique. And then it takes years for him to make it into something that is truly creative and worthwhile. #Quote by Paul Caponigro
Photography quotes by M.G. Vassanji
#167. No amount of photography could replace the memories of a life lived, of lives observed and known, of lives elaborated in the mind and on the page. #Quote by M.G. Vassanji
Photography quotes by Edouard Boubat
#168. Because I know war ... because I know the horror, I don't want to add to it ... After the war, we felt the need to celebrate life, and for me photography was the means to achieve this ... #Quote by Edouard Boubat
Photography quotes by Sarah Sutton
#169. I love photography. My boyfriend's got a great camera, which I bought for his birthday. #Quote by Sarah Sutton
Photography quotes by Erica Tazel
#170. I am inspired by great food, theater, books, the beach, black-and-white photography, and great vocalists, like Dianne Reeves, Alice Smith, and Shirley Horn. I am inspired by my mentor Diana Castle, who is guiding me towards a truth and honesty in my life and work that I have always longed for. #Quote by Erica Tazel
Photography quotes by Antoine D'Agata
#171. And one has to remember that no photography can pretend to show the truth. A picture only shows a given situation under a very specific perspective, consciously or not, openly or not, relevantly or not. Photographers have to accept they can just convey fragments of illusory realities and relate their own intimate experience of the world. In this process of fictionalising an unreachable truth, it's up to them to impose their doubts about any photographic truth, or accept being impotent pawns in the mediatic game. #Quote by Antoine D'Agata
Photography quotes by W. H. Auden
#172. It's a pity I am so impatient and careless, as any ordinary person could learn all the techniques of photography in a week. It is the democratic art, i.e. technical skill is practically eliminated - the more foolproof cameras become with focusing and exposure gadgets the better - and artistic quality depends only on choice of subject. #Quote by W. H. Auden
Photography quotes by Susan Sontag
#173. By furnishing this already crowded world with a duplicate one of images, photography makes us feel that the world is more available than it really is. #Quote by Susan Sontag
Photography quotes by Henri Cartier-Bresson
#174. Photographers deal in things which are continually vanishing and when they have vanished there is no contrivance on earth which can make them come back again. #Quote by Henri Cartier-Bresson
Photography quotes by John Sexton
#175. A photographer needs to be a good editor of negatives and prints! In fact, most of the prints I make are for my eyes only, and they are no good. I find the single most valuable tool in the darkroom is my trash can - that's where most of my prints end up. #Quote by John Sexton
Photography quotes by Robert McKee
#176. Story Climax is the fourth of the five-part structure. This crowning Major Reversal is not necessarily full of noise and violence. Rather, it must be full of meaning. If I could send a telegram to the film producers of the world, it would be these three words: "Meaning Produces Emotion." Not money; not sex; not special effects; not movie stars; not lush photography. #Quote by Robert McKee
Photography quotes by Gordon Willis
#177. Good films are not made by accident, nor is good photography. You can have good things happen, on occasion, by accident that can be applied at that moment in a film, but your craft isn't structured around such things, except in beer commercials. #Quote by Gordon Willis
Photography quotes by Elliott Erwitt
#178. You can find pictures anywhere. It's simply a matter of noticing things and organizing them. You just have to care about what's around you and have a concern with humanity and the human comedy. #Quote by Elliott Erwitt
Photography quotes by Christophe Agou
#179. Whether it is photography, assemblage art or filmmaking, my work is to see beneath the surface. #Quote by Christophe Agou
Photography quotes by Laszlo Moholy-Nagy
#180. We have - through a hundred years of photography and two decades of film - been enormously enriched ... We may say we see the world with entirely different eyes. #Quote by Laszlo Moholy-Nagy
Photography quotes by Neil Postman
#181. The way in which the photograph records experience is also different from the way of language. Language makes sense only when it is presented as a sequence of propositions. Meaning is distorted when a word or sentence is, as we say, taken out of context; when a reader or listener is deprived of what was said before, and after. But there is no such thing as a photograph taken out of context, for a photograph does not require one. In fact, the point of photography is to isolate images from context, so as to make them visible in a different way. #Quote by Neil Postman
Photography quotes by Elliott Erwitt
#182. I like things that have to do with what is real, elegant, well presented and without excessive style. In other words, just fine observation. #Quote by Elliott Erwitt
Photography quotes by Nigel Dennis
#183. Photography started as a means of getting reference material for my paintings of nature subjects. #Quote by Nigel Dennis
Photography quotes by Susan Sontag
#184. Life is not about significant details, illuminated a flash, fixed forever.
Photographs are. #Quote by Susan Sontag
Photography quotes by Aaron Siskind
#185. Producing a photographic document involves preparation in excess. There is first the examination of the idea of the project. Then the visits to the scene, the casual conversations, and more formal interviews - talking, and listening, and looking, looking ... And finally, the pictures themselves, each one planned, talked, taken and examined in terms of the whole. #Quote by Aaron Siskind
Photography quotes by Terry Pratchett
#186. He's got a box with a demon in it that draws pictures," said Rincewind shortly. "Do what the madman says and he will give you gold. #Quote by Terry Pratchett
Photography quotes by Joyce Tenneson
#187. The people I work with, the people I photograph, become a kind of family for me. #Quote by Joyce Tenneson
Photography quotes by Alex Colville

Photography quotes by Elliott Erwitt
#189. Now very often events are set up for photographers ... The weddings are orchestrated about the photographers taking the picture, because if it hasn't been photographed it doesn't really exist. #Quote by Elliott Erwitt
Photography quotes by Frans Lanting
#190. I became interested in photography during my first visit to the United States. I was a student at a university in Holland. I was overwhelmed by the beauty of the American West. That was when I learned about the tradition of nature in American photography. #Quote by Frans Lanting
Photography quotes by Anton Corbijn
#191. With photography, you are lucky if you get people to look at your pictures at some point. There's no formal way to show them. #Quote by Anton Corbijn
Photography quotes by Diane Arbus
#192. One thing that struck me early is that you don't put into a photograph what's going to come out. Or, vice versa, what comes out is not what you put in. #Quote by Diane Arbus
Photography quotes by William Wegman
#193. When I first started making photo pieces it wasn't with the idea of a commitment to the medium. I didn't think I would have to become a photographer to make my photographs. I recall that anything could be used as material for art in that era. Photography was just one more thing. #Quote by William Wegman
Photography quotes by Jay Maisel
#194. As you see something that yo want to shot and it's bearing down on you, it's important to start framing long before the subject gets close to you. The light will reveal itself possibly long before you want to take the image, but you have to wait until the picture comes to you, and if you've been anticipating carefully when the subject will be in position, the background will have been figured out in advance. #Quote by Jay Maisel
Photography quotes by Roland Barthes
#195. The photographic image ... is a message without a code. #Quote by Roland Barthes
Photography quotes by Simon Roberts
#196. No image, however accomplished, could have captured the agonizing poignancy of that moment. It was a moment to be lived, not framed, analysed or reduced in any way. #Quote by Simon Roberts
Photography quotes by Joel Meyerowitz
#197. We think of photography as pictures. And it is. But I think of photography as ideas. And do the pictures sustain your ideas or are they just good pictures? I want to have an experience in the world that is a deepening experience, that makes me feel alive and awake and conscious. #Quote by Joel Meyerowitz
Photography quotes by Arnold Newman
#198. Visual ideas combined with technology combined with personal interpretation equals photography. Each must hold it's own; if it doesn't, the thing collapses. #Quote by Arnold Newman
Photography quotes by Gia Coppola
#199. I was really nervous working with actors, since I come from a photography background. #Quote by Gia Coppola
Photography quotes by Peter Lindbergh
#200. I believe that the source of your inspiration is very important. I sometimes see this problem with photographers, even very good ones, who have drawn too much inspiration from photography and who, over time, have a problem forming their own identity. #Quote by Peter Lindbergh
