Nighttime Prayer quotes by Eugene H. Peterson
#1. You seem disappointed that I am not more responsive to your interest in "spiritual direction". Actually, I am more than a little ambivalent about the term, particularly in the ways it is being used so loosely without any sense of knowledge of the church's traditions in these matters.

If by spiritual direction you mean entering into a friendship with another person in which an awareness and responsiveness to God's Spirit in the everydayness of your life is cultivated, fine. Then why call in an awkward term like "spiritual direction"? Why not just "friend"?

Spiritual direction strikes me as pretentious in these circumstances, as if there were some expertise that can be acquired more or less on its own and then dispensed on demand.

The other reason for my lack of enthusiasm is my well-founded fear of professionalism in any and all matters of the Christian life. Or maybe the right label for my fear is "functionalism". The moment an aspect of Christian living (human life, for that matter) is defined as a role, it is distorted, debased - and eventually destroyed. We are brothers and sisters with one another, friends and lovers, saints and sinners.

The irony here is that the rise of interest in spiritual direction almost certainly comes from the proliferation of role-defined activism in our culture. We are sick and tired of being slotted into a function and then manipulated with Scripture and prayer to do what someone has decided (often wi #Quote by Eugene H. Peterson
Nighttime Prayer quotes by Michael Pollan
#2. What Nietzsche is describing is a kind of transcendence - a mental state of complete and utter absorption well known to artists, athletes, gamblers, musicians, dancers, soldiers in battle, mystics, meditators, and the devout during prayer. #Quote by Michael Pollan
Nighttime Prayer quotes by Andre Schwarz-Bart
#3. It is night at the front, a shadow, a shot. The Jew who has just fired
hears a moan ...
And then, mother, the hair stands up on his head, for only a few feet from him in the darkness the enemy voice is reciting in Hebrew the prayer of the dying. Ai, God, the soldier has cut down a Jewish brother! Ai, misery! He drops his rifle and runs into no man's land, insane with shame and grief. Insane, you understand? The enemy fires at him, his comrades shout at him to come back. But he refuses; he stays in no man's land and dies. Ai, misery, ai ... ! #Quote by Andre Schwarz-Bart
Nighttime Prayer quotes by Charles R. Swindoll
#4. Noise and crowds have a way of siphoning our energy and distracting our attention, making prayer an added chore rather than a comforting relief #Quote by Charles R. Swindoll
Nighttime Prayer quotes by Kaui Hart Hemmings
#5. I'd like you to come to Kauai with me," I say. "And Scottie. I think it would be good to get her away from the hospital for a day. We can leave in the morning, find him, and be home tomorrow night. If it takes us a day longer, that's fine, but we won't stay more than two nights. That's our deadline. If we don't find him, then at least we know we tried."

"And this will make you feel better somehow?"

"It's for her," I say. "Not for him or me."

"What if he's a wreck? What if he loses his shit?"

"Then I'll take care of him." I imagine Brian Speer wailing on my shoulder. I imagine him and my daughters by Joanie's bed, her lover and his loud sobs shaming us. "Just so you know, I am angry. I'm not this pure and noble guy. I want to do this for her, but I also want to see who he is. I want to ask him a few things."

"Just call him. Tell his office it's an emergency. They'll have him call you."

"I want to tell him in person. I haven't told anyone over the phone, and I don't want to start now."

"You told Troy."

"Troy doesn't count. I just need to do this. On the phone he can escape. If I see him in person, he'll have nowhere to go."

We both look away when our eyes meet. She hasn't crossed the border into my room. She never does during her nighttime doorway chats.

"Were you guys having trouble?" Alex asks. "Is that why she cheated?"

"I didn't think we were having troub #Quote by Kaui Hart Hemmings
Nighttime Prayer quotes by Yeonmi Park
#6. Why does this person, who doesn't even speak our language, care so much about us that he is willing to risk his life for us? It moved us both to tears. I said a silent prayer of thanks as we became a part of the night. #Quote by Yeonmi Park
Nighttime Prayer quotes by Ken Hutcherson
#7. I did not become a Christian to live the 50s and 60s all over a second time. Muslims have more rights and freedom of religion than I do as a Christian. Tell a Muslim he can't pray at school or at the airport or downtown when prayer time is called for, and see what happens. Tell a Muslim cleric serving as a chaplain in our brilliant military that he has to marry a same-sex couple, and see what happens. #Quote by Ken Hutcherson
Nighttime Prayer quotes by Steven Kotler
#8. We ache for this feeling, but it's everywhere. Booze, drugs, sex, sport, art, prayer, music, meditation, virtual reality. Kids, hyperventilating, spinning in circles, feel oneness. Why William James called it the basic lesson of expanded consciousness - just tweak a few knobs and levers in the brain and bam. So the drop, the comedown, it's not that we miss oneness once it's gone; it's that we suddenly can't feel what we actually know is there. Phantom limb syndrome for the soul. #Quote by Steven Kotler
Nighttime Prayer quotes by George Muller
#9. It is not enough to begin to pray, nor to pray aright; nor is it enough to continue for a time to pray; but we must patiently, believingly, continue in prayer until we obtain an answer; and further we have not only to continue in prayer unto the end, but we have also to believe that God does hear us, and will answer our prayers. Most frequently we fail in not continuing in prayer until the blessing is obtained, and in not expecting the blessing. #Quote by George Muller
Nighttime Prayer quotes by Victoria Moran
#10. If you've ever tried meditation and didn't stay with it, I recommend you try it again. Some time has passed. In the interim, you may have developed the discipline of mind or the patience you were short on before. Let these qualities aid your practice. (173) #Quote by Victoria Moran
Nighttime Prayer quotes by Richard Rohr
#11. Francis's all-night prayer, "Who are you, O God, and who am I?" is probably a perfect prayer, because it is the most honest prayer we can offer. #Quote by Richard Rohr
Nighttime Prayer quotes by Ian K. Smith
#12. At its core, Jesus's teaching about the kingdom is summed up in the Lord's Prayer: "Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven" (Matt. 6:10). The prayer is that God's kingdom will come to earth and that God's will be done on earth as is the case in heaven. Earth is spoiled by sin, but the question is whether it is spoiled beyond restoration. Jesus's prayer clearly implies that there is hope. #Quote by Ian K. Smith
Nighttime Prayer quotes by Hughes Oliphant Old
#13. Spontaneity needs to be balanced by careful preparation and forethought. It needs to be supported by an intense prayer life on the part of the minister. One must be well experienced in prayer to lead in prayer. One can hardly lead if one does not know the way oneself. Spontaneity has to arise from a profound experience of prayer. #Quote by Hughes Oliphant Old

Nighttime Prayer quotes by Robert D. Hales
#17. Gratitude is a divine principle: 'Thou shalt thank the Lord thy God in all things.' (D&C 59:7.) This scripture means that we express thankfulness for what happens, not only for the good things in life but also for the opposition and challenges of life that add to our experience and faith. We put our lives in His hands, realizing that all that transpires will be for our experience. When in prayer we say, 'Thy will be done,' we are really expressing faith and gratitude and acknowledging that we will accept whatever happens in our lives. #Quote by Robert D. Hales
Nighttime Prayer quotes by Mark Batterson
#18. Don't just read the Bible. Start circling the promises. Don't just make a wish. Write down a list of God-glorifying life goals. Don't just pray. Keep a prayer journal. Define your dream. Claim your promise. Spell your miracle. #Quote by Mark Batterson
Nighttime Prayer quotes by J.R. Ward
#19. Closing his eyes, he sent up a prayer to anyone who was listening, asking please, for God's sake, stop sending him signals that they were right for each other. He'd read that book, seen the movie, bought the soundtrack, the DVD, the T-shirt, the mug, the bobble-head, and the insider's guide. He knew every reason they could have been lock and key.
But just as he was aware of all that aligned them, he was even clearer on how they were damned to be ever apart. #Quote by J.R. Ward
Nighttime Prayer quotes by Nancy Mairs
#20. Who one believes God to be is most accurately revealed not in any credo but in the way one speaks to God when no one else is listening. #Quote by Nancy Mairs
Nighttime Prayer quotes by Chip Ingram

Nighttime Prayer quotes by John Ortberg
#22. You don't know how many people have been strengthened because you asked God to encourage them; how many people have been healed because you prayed for their bodies; how many spiritual runaways have come home because you prayed for their souls. None of us may ever know the true effects of our prayers this side of death. But we do know this: History belongs to the intercessors. #Quote by John Ortberg
Nighttime Prayer quotes by John Mott
#23. Every other consideration and plan and emphasis is secondary to that of wielding the forces of prayer. #Quote by John Mott
Nighttime Prayer quotes by William Mackergo Taylor
#24. Prayers born out of murmuring are always dangerous. When, therefore, we are in a discontented mood, let'us take care what we cry for, lest God give it to us, and thereby punish us. #Quote by William Mackergo Taylor
Nighttime Prayer quotes by Peter Kreeft
#25. The single most important piece of advice about prayer is one word: Begin! #Quote by Peter Kreeft
Nighttime Prayer quotes by Billy Graham

Nighttime Prayer quotes by Eugene H. Peterson
#28. Abruptly Jesus broke into prayer: Thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth. You've concealed your ways from sophisticates and know-it-alls, but spelled them out clearly to ordinary people. Yes, Father, that's the way you like to work. #Quote by Eugene H. Peterson
Nighttime Prayer quotes by Jimmy Carter
#29. I'm not in favor of the government mandating a prayer in school because our country was founded on the fact that no particular religious faith would have ascendance over or preferential treatment over any other. #Quote by Jimmy Carter
Nighttime Prayer quotes by A.W. Tozer
#30. If when we come to prayer our hearts feel dull and unspiritual, we should not try to argue ourselves out of it. Rather, we should admit it frankly and pray our way through. #Quote by A.W. Tozer
Nighttime Prayer quotes by Chris Fabry
#31. Prayer, at its most basic level, was surrender. Like Jesus in the garden, saying, "Not My will, but Yours, be done." The ironic thing was, when a person surrendered their will, they got God's, and then they received what they were really looking for all along. This was what she believed. #Quote by Chris Fabry
Nighttime Prayer quotes by Kenneth L. Patton
#32. If I could find one word
that would shudder the air
like that frightened sob,
that wordless prayer
of my newly-born,
who drew one breath,
and with unopened eyes
sank back into death;
If I could break the world's cold heart
with that cry,
then this grief would lift
and I could die. #Quote by Kenneth L. Patton

Nighttime Prayer quotes by Jim Cymbala
#37. Because we are God's children ... we can bring our needs to him with certainty in prayer ... Prayer is not some kind of heavenly lottery. Nor does the Bible counsel us to pray with an "I hope this will work" ... attitude. Instead ... prayer brings us before the throne of grace as children seeking the help of their heavenly Father. That's the heart of breakthrough, successful prayer-the bold confidence that we are talking to the Father who delights to supply our needs. #Quote by Jim Cymbala
