Doubtful quotes by Terry Pratchett
#3. Angua sighed and stepped into the room behind the little museum. It was like the back rooms of museums everywhere, full of junk and things there is no room for on the shelves and also items of doubtful provenance, such as coins dated '52 BC'. #Quote by Terry Pratchett

Doubtful quotes by Raymond Coppinger
#5. More importantly, modern dogs simply don't behave like modern wolves. Popular dog "experts" like Cesar Millan may tell you that a good dog owner needs to play the role of the alpha wolf, the dominant pack leader. But the fact is that dogs don't live in hierarchically organized packs. Indeed it's doubtful that most wolves live this way. #Quote by Raymond Coppinger
Doubtful quotes by Charlotte McPherren
#6. You know how to shoot that thing?" Doubtful merriment danced in Willow's eyes.
The landlady's smile was noncommittal as she simply pointed at a small twig on an old lightning-burnt ironwood. "Watch." She hefted the gun, squinted one eye, and pulled the trigger. The twig splintered off to parts unknown. She gave the gun a neat twirl, blew at the smoking barrel, and returned the weapon to her lap. "Close your mouth, dear. You'll gather flies. #Quote by Charlotte McPherren
Doubtful quotes by Jason Robert Brown
#7. I'm not doubtful that I am doing what I should be doing - writing for theater - and that I'm doing it in a way no one else does it. Whether anyone else is paying attention or anyone else cares, I'm still ambivalent about that. It's still an open question. #Quote by Jason Robert Brown
Doubtful quotes by Jennifer Egan
#8. Think about medieval times, Danny, like when this castle was built. People were constantly seeing ghosts, having visions - they thought Christ was sitting with them at the dinner table, they thought angels and devils were flying around. We don't see those things anymore. Why? Was all that stuff happening before and then it stopped? Unlikely. Was everyone nuts in medieval times? Doubtful. But their imaginations were more active. Their inner lives were rich and weird. #Quote by Jennifer Egan
Doubtful quotes by Lisa Kleypas
#9. At sixteen, the youngest Hathaway sibling was at that vulnerable age between childhood and adulthood. A sweet-natured little scamp, she was as inquisitive as one of the many pets she had accumulated. Since Amelia's marriage to Rohan, Beatrix had been begging to go to finishing school. Kev suspected she had read one too many novels featuring heroines who acquired airs and graces at "academies for young ladies." He was doubtful that finishing school would turn out well for the free-spirited Beatrix. #Quote by Lisa Kleypas

Doubtful quotes by Nathaniel Cotton
#15. Tis reason's part
To govern and to guard the heart,
To lull the wayward soul to rest,
When hopes and fears distract the breast;
Reason may calm this doubtful strife,
And steer thy bark through various life. #Quote by Nathaniel Cotton
Doubtful quotes by Napoleon Bonaparte
#16. A mathematician of the first rank, Laplace quickly revealed himself as only a mediocre administrator; from his first work we saw that we had been deceived. Laplace saw no question from its true point of view; he sought subtleties everywhere; had only doubtful ideas, and finally carried the spirit of the infinitely small into administration. #Quote by Napoleon Bonaparte
Doubtful quotes by Barack Obama
#17. Doubtful of what we can achieve to put their hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a better day. #Quote by Barack Obama
Doubtful quotes by James A. Garfield
#18. A nation is not worthy to be saved if, in the hour of its fate, it will not gather up all its jewels of manhood and life, and go down into the conflict however bloody and doubtful, resolved on measureless ruin or complete success. #Quote by James A. Garfield
Doubtful quotes by William Hazlitt
#19. In exploring new and doubtful tracts of speculation, the mind strikes out true and original views; as a drop of water hesitates at first what direction it will take, but afterwards follows its own course. #Quote by William Hazlitt
Doubtful quotes by Cynthia Hand
#20. He leaned in. This was it. His first kiss. His first k -
"BOY!" yelled a distant voice. "WHERE ARE YOU, BOY!"
Grace drew back abruptly. "Your granny is calling you."
"She can wait," he said.
"IT'S TIME FOR YOUR MEDICINE!" Gran called out.
Gracie jumped to her feet. "You should go in."
She hastily brushed off her trousers. "Besides, I just remembered some chores your sister wanted me to get done. Some very important chores. Full of ... tasks."
"Tasks?" Edward said, doubtful.
"Yes, tasks. Lots of them."
"Gracie," he started as she backed away from him. "Wait."
He watched helplessly as Gracie set off toward the keep, almost at a run.
At the moment we should confess that Edward briefly considered murdering his dear sweet grandmother. And he might have gotten away with it too, on account of the rest of the world thinking the old lady was already dead. #Quote by Cynthia Hand
Doubtful quotes by Heather Choate Davis
#21. We love Christmas presents but not Christ; Easter baskets but not crosses. We want to tell our friends with cancer that we will pray for them (we don't) and our puddle-eyed children that their goldfish have gone to heaven (doubtful). When we lose our jobs we want to take comfort in the idea that God doesn't give us more than we can handle, but really, how can we? We have absolutely no idea what God has given us or what it might be for. We haven't talked to Him in ages. #Quote by Heather Choate Davis
Doubtful quotes by Charles Dickens
#22. Although a skillful flatterer is a most delightful companion if you have him all to yourself, his taste becomes very doubtful when he takes to complimenting other people. #Quote by Charles Dickens

Doubtful quotes by Jay Gould
#24. It was the custom when men received nominations to come to me for contributions, and I made them and considered them good paying investments for the company. In politics I was an Erie Railroad man all the time. #Quote by Jay Gould
Doubtful quotes by Shams-i Tabrizi
#25. We can only learn and advance with contradictions.
The faithful inside should meet the doubtful. The doubtful should meet the faithful. Human slowly advances and becomes mature when he accepts his contradictions. #Quote by Shams-i Tabrizi
Doubtful quotes by Naomi Novik
#26. As happy as I would be to forgo the very doubtful pleasure of watching you flop about like an exhausted eel over the least cantrip," he bit out, "we've already seen the consequences of leaving you to your own devices. #Quote by Naomi Novik
Doubtful quotes by Ivan Illich
#27. Schools are even less efficient in the arrangement of the circumstances which encourage the open-ended, exploratory use of acquired skills, for which I will reserve the term "liberal education." The main reason for this is that school is obligatory and becomes schooling for schooling's sake: an enforced stay in the company of teachers, which pays off in the doubtful privilege of more such company. Just as skill instruction must be freed from curricular restraints, so must liberal education be dissociated from obligatory attendance. Both skill-learning
and education for inventive and creative behavior can be aided by institutional arrangement, but they are of a different, frequently opposed nature. #Quote by Ivan Illich
Doubtful quotes by Fiona Wallace
#28. The monsters are gone."
"Really?" Doubtful.
"I killed the monsters. That's what fathers do. #Quote by Fiona Wallace
Doubtful quotes by Jules Verne
#29. At the beginning of the year 1859 it was estimated that more than 120,000 native officers and soldiers had perished, and more than 200,000 civilian natives, who paid with their lives for their participation - often doubtful - in this insurrection. Terrible reprisals these; and perhaps, on that occasion, Mr. Gladstone had some reason on his side when he protested so energetically against them in Parliament. It was important, for the better understanding of our story, that the death-list on both sides should be given as above, to make the reader comprehend the unsatiated hatred which still remained in the hearts of the conquered, thirsting for vengeance, as well as in those of the conquerors, who, ten years afterwards, were still mourning the victims of Cawnpore and Lucknow. As #Quote by Jules Verne
Doubtful quotes by Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
#30. For a strolling damsel a doubtful reputation bears. #Quote by Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
Doubtful quotes by Michael Chabon

Doubtful quotes by Queen Victoria
#32. I think people really marry far too much; it is such a lottery after all, and for a poor woman a very doubtful happiness. #Quote by Queen Victoria
Doubtful quotes by Aiden Wilson Tozer
#33. It is doubtful we can be Christian in anything unless we are Christian in everything. #Quote by Aiden Wilson Tozer
Doubtful quotes by Richard House
#34. It is doubtful that you could find a full-blooded Cossack who would voluntarily take part in any such activity, as the girl, so to speak. The receiver. I cannot think of one example myself, not one case which involves a full-blooded Cossack. Historically, this is a weakness of the Greeks, the Italians, and of course your own people, who are particularly fond of this vice. #Quote by Richard House
Doubtful quotes by Walter J Chantry
#35. If you have never felt your soul poured out before the Lord with a consequent exhaustion, it is doubtful whether you have advanced far in the school of prayer. #Quote by Walter J Chantry
Doubtful quotes by Dorothy Canfield Fisher
#36. I never did,' said the little girl, but in a less doubtful tone than she had ever used with that phrase so familiar to her. A dim notion was growing in her mind that the fact that she had never done a thing was no proof that she couldn't. #Quote by Dorothy Canfield Fisher
Doubtful quotes by William Shakespeare
#37. Were it good
To set the exact wealth of all our states
All at one cast? to set so rich a main
On the nice hazard of one doubtful hour?
It were not good. #Quote by William Shakespeare
Doubtful quotes by George William Curtis
#38. Virtue does not truly reward her votary if she leaves him sad and half doubtful whether it would not have been better to serve vice. #Quote by George William Curtis
Doubtful quotes by Marcelo Gleiser
#39. The current leading candidates for dark matter are particles predicted to exist from supersymmetric theories, extensions of current particle physics that include a new symmetry of Nature. The reader may recognize the "super" in supersymmetry from superstring theory, a candidate theory for unifying general relativity and quantum mechanics. As of the winter of 2014, no evidence for supersymmetry had been found, despite decades of intense search and the enthusiastic support of many physicists. At this point, it is unclear and somewhat doubtful that supersymmetry is realized in Nature. #Quote by Marcelo Gleiser
Doubtful quotes by Francis Quarles
#40. The world is deceitful; her end is doubtful, her conclusion is horrible, her judge terrible, and her judgment is intolerable. #Quote by Francis Quarles
Doubtful quotes by Antonia Perdu
#41. We were bullied, broken, built up, bronzed and polished.
We grew dull, dusty, doubtful, dark, and forgetful.
Yet we still know that we can love deeply. #Quote by Antonia Perdu
Doubtful quotes by Walter Lippmann
#42. It is doubtful whether a supreme master of style could pack all the elements of truth that complete justice would demand into a hundred word account of what had happened in Korea during the course of several months. For language is by no means a perfect vehicle of meanings. Words, like currency, are turned over and over again, to evoke one set of images to-day, another to-morrow. There is no certainty whatever that the same word will call out exactly the same idea in the reader's mind as it did in the reporter's. Theoretically, if each fact and each relation had a name that was unique, and if everyone had agreed on the names, it would be possible to communicate without misunderstanding. In the exact sciences there is an approach to this ideal, and that is part of the reason why of all forms of world-wide cooperation, scientific inquiry is the most effective. #Quote by Walter Lippmann
Doubtful quotes by G.K. Chesterton
#43. the next best thing to being really inside Christendom is to be really outside it. And a particular point of it is that the popular critics of Christianity are not really outside it. They are on a debatable ground, in every sense of the term. They are doubtful in their very doubts. Their criticism has taken on a curious tone; as of a random and illiterate heckling. #Quote by G.K. Chesterton
Doubtful quotes by T.F. Hodge
#44. Naysayers are frightened of their own power. #Quote by T.F. Hodge
Doubtful quotes by Karen Fisher
#45. She looked at him. He saw her tendrils of damp hair. He looked off, but he had never felt this thing so deep before, this need to speak, to say how far he had been swept from what is good, and the sense seemed doubtful and unmanly. #Quote by Karen Fisher
Doubtful quotes by Julián Marías
#46. Nevertheless, a distinction must be made between skepticism as a philosophical thesis and skepticism as an attitude in life. As a philosophical thesis, it is a contradictory one, since it affirms the impossibility of knowing truth, although this affirmation itself claims to be true. Thus, skepticism as a thesis refutes itself in the very act of being formulated. The other aspect is different: this is the abstention from all judgments, skepticism in life, which neither affirms nor denies. This skepticism appears in history time and again, although here, too, it is doubtful whether human life can remain floating in this abstention without taking root in convictions. #Quote by Julián Marías
Doubtful quotes by Lewis Carroll
#47. I'm doubtful about the temper of your flamingo. Shall I try the experiment? #Quote by Lewis Carroll
Doubtful quotes by Pat Robertson
#48. Are we a Christian nation now? It's doubtful. But did we start out as one? Without question. #Quote by Pat Robertson
Doubtful quotes by Joan Didion
#49. I lost the conviction that lights would always turn green for me, the pleasant certainty that those rather passive virtues which had won me approval as a child automatically guaranteed me not only Phi Beta Kappa keys but happiness, honor, and the love of a good man; lost a certain touching faith in the totem power of good manners, clean hair, and a proven competence on the Stanford-Binet scale. To such doubtful amulets had my self-respect been pinned, and I faced myself that day with the non-plused apprehension of someone who has come across a vampire and has no crucifix at hand. #Quote by Joan Didion
Doubtful quotes by Bangambiki Habyarimana
#50. Doubts are necessary; they keep us on the right path #Quote by Bangambiki Habyarimana
Doubtful quotes by Eric Hoffer
#51. It is doubtful whether the oppressed ever fight for freedom. They fight for pride and power-power to oppress others. #Quote by Eric Hoffer
Doubtful quotes by Eva Ibbotson
#52. For the first part of the journey Maia kept her eyes on the side of the road. Now that she was really leaving her friends it was hard to hold back her tears.
She had reached the gulping stage when she heard a loud snapping noise and turned her head. Miss Minton had opened the metal clasp of her large black handbag and was handing her a clean handkerchief, embroidered with the initial A.
"Myself," said the governess in her deep gruff voice, "I would think how lucky I was. How fortunate."
"To go to the Amazon, you mean?"
"To have so many friends who were sad to see me go."
"Didn't you have friends who minded you leaving?"
Miss Minton's thin lips twitched for a moment.
"My sister's canary, perhaps. If he had understood what was happening. Which is extremely doubtful. #Quote by Eva Ibbotson
Doubtful quotes by Charles Caleb Colton
#53. In cases of doubtful morality, it is usual to say is there any harm in doing this? This question may sometimes be best answered by asking ourselves another; is there any harm in letting it alone? #Quote by Charles Caleb Colton
Doubtful quotes by Karl Wiggins
#54. You're hardly likely to find a Chav mating with a lady of charm, beauty and sophistication, are you? The subsidised breeding farms they live in are unlikely to attract a lady who has cultivated proper deportment, and it's doubtful she'll be swayed by his shell suit, Burberry cap and Vauxhall Corsa #Quote by Karl Wiggins
Doubtful quotes by Geoffrey Pyke
#55. Our susceptibility to myth is a world danger. Because the application of science to human behaviour has come so late the myth is regarded as less dangerous than the bacillus. It is doubtful whether such a belief is justified. #Quote by Geoffrey Pyke
Doubtful quotes by Christianna Brand
#56. The Agency was doubtful, because they had already sent a lot of nurses and nannies and governesses to Mr. and Mrs. Brown's family. 'The person you want,' they said, 'is Nurse Matilda. #Quote by Christianna Brand
Doubtful quotes by Jon Kabat-Zinn
#57. Perhaps we just need little reminders from time to time that we are already dignified, deserving, worthy. Sometimes we don't feel that way because of the wounds and the scars we carry from the past or because of the uncertainty of the future. It is doubtful that we came to feel undeserving on our own. We were helped to feel unworthy. We were taught it in a thousand ways when we were little, and we learned our lessons well. #Quote by Jon Kabat-Zinn
Doubtful quotes by Russell Brand
#58. As a person ... I'm a little more doubtful, introspective and analytical. #Quote by Russell Brand
Doubtful quotes by Friedrich August Von Hayek
#59. It used to be the boast of free men that, so long as they kept within the bounds of the known law, there was no need to ask anybody's permission or to obey anybody's orders. It is doubtful whether any of us can make this claim today. #Quote by Friedrich August Von Hayek
Doubtful quotes by Nathan Sawaya
#60. When people go to museums and see a sculpture made out of marble, they appreciate it but it's very doubtful that they will go home and have a slab of marble they can chip away at, but people do have LEGO. I don't have any LEGO specially made for me, all of the shapes, sizes and colours I use are available in stores so that if someone is inspired to create on their own, they can go and buy the very same bricks. #Quote by Nathan Sawaya
Doubtful quotes by Aesop
#61. A doubtful friend is worse than a certain enemy. Let a man be one thing or the other, and we then know how to meet him. #Quote by Aesop
Doubtful quotes by Naomi Novik
#62. Well, I only wish you may all not have your throats slit by Uygurs," Riley said in deep pessimism, giving up, after he had tried once more at dinner to persuade them to remain. . .
"I will not let anyone slit your throats at all," Temeraire said, a little indignantly. "Although I would like to see an Uygur; is that a kind of dragon?"
"A kind of bird, I think," Granby said; Laurence was doubtful, but he did not like to contradict when he was not sure himself.
"Tribesmen," Tharkay said, the next morning.
"Oh." Temeraire was a little disappointed; he had seen people before. "That is not very exciting, but perhaps they are very fierce?" he asked hopefully.
"Have you enough money to buy thirty camels?" Tharkay asked Laurence, after he had finally escaped a lengthy interrogation as to the many other prospective delights of their journey, such as violent sandstorms and frozen mountain passes. #Quote by Naomi Novik
Doubtful quotes by Julia Quinn
#63. She Looked doubtful."If you insist." "I do." "Very well." With barely a moment for either of them to prepare, she drew back and let fly. Before James had any idea what was happening, he was sprawled on the ground, and his right eye socket was throbbing. Elizabeth, rather than displaying any sort of worry or concern over his health, was jumping up and down, squealing with glee. "I did it! I really did it! Did you see it? Did you see it?" "No," he muttered, "but I felt it". #Quote by Julia Quinn
Doubtful quotes by Wernher Von Braun
#64. The first men who set out for Mars had better make sure they leave everything at home in apple-pie order. They won't get back to earth for more than two and a half years. The difficulties of a trip to mars are formidable ... What curious information will these first explorers carry back from Mars? Nobody knows-and its extremely doubtful that anyone now living will ever know. All that can be said with certainty today is this: the trip will be made, and will be made ... someday. #Quote by Wernher Von Braun

Doubtful quotes by Quinn Loftis
#67. I am more likely to be the mate of that old mare in the field than the mate of a royal, let alone the Alpha of our pack. And for the signs to appear even before I am sixteen seems quite doubtful. #Quote by Quinn Loftis
Doubtful quotes by Rachel Caine
#68. Claire to Myrnin: "Do the guards at the mall know you're out?" He didn't look up. "That's very doubtful, I did kill the guard who spotted me, after all." They all stopped what they were doing and Shane snapped around and took a step toward him.
"Would that be the dead guard in our damn basement?"
"Well, of course, how many dead guards could there be? Why, did you kill one, too? Wasteful. #Quote by Rachel Caine
Doubtful quotes by C.S. Lewis
#69. Emerson has said, "When half-gods go, the gods arrive." That is a very doubtful maxim. Better say, "When God arrives (and only then) the half-gods can remain." Left to themselves they either vanish or become demons. #Quote by C.S. Lewis

Doubtful quotes by W.B. Yeats
#72. The Celt, and his cromlechs, and his pillar-stones, these will not change much – indeed, it is doubtful if anybody at all changes at any time. In spite of hosts of deniers, and asserters, and wise-men, and professors, the majority still are adverse to sitting down to dine thirteen at a table, or being helped to salt, or walking under a ladder, of seeing a single magpie flirting his chequered tale. There are, of course, children of light who have set their faces against all this, although even a newspaperman, if you entice him into a cemetery at midnight, will believe in phantoms, for everyone is a visionary, if you scratch him deep enough. But the Celt, unlike any other, is a visionary without scratching. #Quote by W.B. Yeats
Doubtful quotes by Martin Luther
#73. The faith towards God in Christ must be sure and steadfast, that it may solace and make glad the conscience, and put it to rest. When a man has this certainty, he has overcome the serpent; but if he be doubtful of the doctrine, it is for him very dangerous to dispute with the devil. #Quote by Martin Luther
Doubtful quotes by Charles Caleb Colton
#74. It is doubtful whether mankind are most indebted to those who like Bacon and Butler dig the gold from the mine of literature, or to those who, like Paley, purify it, stamp it, fix its real value, and give it currency and utility #Quote by Charles Caleb Colton
Doubtful quotes by Chris Colfer
#75. What are our options? If I have the choice of being doubtful or being hopeful, I'm going to choose hopeful. It takes less work to be positive. #Quote by Chris Colfer
Doubtful quotes by John Assaraf
#76. The people that do understand how the brain works and how the chemicals are released in the brain when they feel uncomfortable, uncertain or doubtful they do it anyway. They overcome the biological and neurological releases by understanding what's causing them and moving forward anyway. #Quote by John Assaraf
Doubtful quotes by Mahatma Gandhi
#77. I know nothing of the science of astrology and I consider it to be a science, if it is a science, of doubtful value, to be severely left alone by those who have any faith in Providence. #Quote by Mahatma Gandhi
Doubtful quotes by Eimear McBride
#78. This wrong doubtful body should not have been mine. Mine was. Not this. Was perfect. Once. Drag the. I will and sit and drown if the. Come water. Over land. Swallow up. Swallow me down. Drag me in the gullys. In the pipes please and the drains. #Quote by Eimear McBride
Doubtful quotes by Niccolo Machiavelli
#79. A Prince is likewise esteemed who is a stanch friend and a thorough foe, that is to say, who without reserve openly declares for one against another, this being always a more advantageous course than to stand neutral. For supposing two of your powerful neighbours come to blows, it must either be that you have, or have not, reason to fear the one who comes off victorious. In either case it will always be well for you to declare yourself, and join in frankly with one side or other. For should you fail to do so you are certain, in the former of the cases put, to become the prey of the victor to the satisfaction and delight of the vanquished, and no reason or circumstance that you may plead will avail to shield or shelter you; for the victor dislikes doubtful friends, and such as will not help him at a pinch; and the vanquished will have nothing to say to you, since you would not share his fortunes sword in hand. #Quote by Niccolo Machiavelli
Doubtful quotes by Ralph Waldo Emerson
#80. Many of the historical proverbs have a doubtful paternity. #Quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson
Doubtful quotes by Alison Croggon
#81. You have a great heart, but will only find it to be so through great pain. This is the wisdom of love, and its doubtful gift ... I have endured much suffering and still remain unbitter and unclosed. #Quote by Alison Croggon
Doubtful quotes by Edward Gibbon
#82. The present is a fleeting moment, the past is no more; and our prospect of futurity is dark and doubtful. This day may possibly be my last: but the laws of probability, so true in general, so fallacious in particular, still allow about fifteen years. I shall soon enter into the period which, as the most agreeable of his long life, was selected by the judgement and experience of the sage Fontenelle. His choice is approved by the eloquent historian of nature, who fixes our moral happiness to the mature season in which our passions are supposed to be calmed, our duties fulfilled, our ambition satisfied, our fame and fortune established on a solid basis. In private conversation, that great and amiable man added the weight of his own experience; and this autumnal felicity might be exemplified in the lives of Voltaire, Hume, and many other men of letters. I am far more inclined to embrace than to dispute this comfortable doctrine. I will not suppose any premature decay of the mind or body; but I must reluctantly observe that two causes, the abbreviation of time, and the failure hope, will always tinge with a browner shade the evening of life.
...The warm desires, the long expectations of youth, are founded on the ignorance of themselves and of the world: they are generally damped by time and experience, by disappointment or possession; and after the middle season the crowd must be content to remain at the foot of the mountain: while the few who have climbed the summit aspire t #Quote by Edward Gibbon
Doubtful quotes by Sigmund Freud
#83. Religion has clearly performed great services for human civilization. It has contributed much towards the taming of the asocial instincts. But not enough. It has ruled human society for many thousands of years and has had time to show what it can achieve. If it had succeeded in making the majority of mankind happy, in comforting them, in reconciling them to life and in making them into vehicles of civilization, no one would dream of attempting to alter the existing conditions. But what do we see instead? We see that an appallingly large number of people are dissatisfied with civilization and unhappy in it, and feel it as a yoke which must be shaken off; and that these people either do everything in their power to change that civilization, or else go so far in their hostility to it that they will have nothing to do with civilization or with a restriction of instinct. At this point it will be objected against us that this state of affairs is due to the very fact that religion has lost a part of its influence over human masses precisely because of the deplorable effect of the advances of science. We will note this admission and the reason given for it, and we shall make use of it later for our own purposes; but the objection itself has no force.

It is doubtful whether men were in general happier at a time when religious doctrines held unrestricted sway; more moral they certainly were not. They have always known how to externalize the precepts of religion and thus to n #Quote by Sigmund Freud
Doubtful quotes by Dale Carnegie
#84. Many people think that if they were only in some other place, or had some other job, they would be happy. Well, that is doubtful. So get as much happiness out of what you are doing as you can and don't put off being happy until some future date. #Quote by Dale Carnegie

Doubtful quotes by Georgette Heyer
#88. he disclosed that he had been set upon by two Bedlamites, both of whom had jumped out from behind a bush, roaring at him like a couple of ferocious wild beasts ... The Sergeant cast a doubtful glance at Lieutenant Ottershaw, for, in his opinion, this had a false ring. His men, as he frequently informed them, put him forcibly in mind of many things, ranging from gape-seeds, hedge-birds, slush-buckets, and sheep-biters, to beetles, tailless dogs, and dead herrings, but none of them, least of all the two raw dragoons in question, had ever reminded him of a ferocious wild beast. Field-mice, yes, he thought, remembering the sad loss of steel in those posted to watch the Dower House; but if the young gentleman had detected any resemblance to ferocious wild beasts in his assailants, the Sergeant was prepared to take his Bible oath they had not been the baconbrained knock-in-the-cradles he had posted (much against his will) within the ground of Darracott place.
But Sergeant Hoole had never, until this disastrous evening, set eyes on Mr. Claud Darracott. Lieutenant Ottershaw had beheld that Pink of the Ton picking his delicate way across the cobbles in Rye, clad in astonishing but unquestionably modish raiment, and holding a quizzing-glass up to his eye with one fragile white hand, and it did not strike him as remarkable that this Bartholomew baby should liken two overzealous dragoons to wild beasts. #Quote by Georgette Heyer
Doubtful quotes by John Milton
#89. Thus repulsed, our final hope
Is flat despair: we must exasperate
The Almighty Victor to spend all his rage;
And that must end us; that must be our cure,
To be no more. Sad cure! for who would lose,
Though full of pain, this intellectual being,
Those thoughts that wander through eternity,
To perish rather, swallowed up and lost
In the wide womb of uncreated night,
Devoid of sense and motion? And who knows,
Let this be good, whether our angry Foe
Can give it, or will ever? How he can
Is doubtful; that he never will is sure.
John Milton, Belial
(Book II Paradise Lost) #Quote by John Milton
Doubtful quotes by John Feldmann
#90. I've learned the idea of pausing when agitated or doubtful. I can still write the e-mail but instead of sending that e-mail to the person I'm in a fight with, more often than not these days, I just delete it. Or I run it by someone else that I trust before I send it. And then I usually laugh at the e-mail and how funny it is. #Quote by John Feldmann
Doubtful quotes by Manto Tshabalala-Msimang
#91. South Africa is the only country in the world who gives AZT to health workers for needle-stick injuries. It's very doubtful that we're doing the right thing. #Quote by Manto Tshabalala-Msimang
Doubtful quotes by Brandon Mull
#92. I think we should probably get Vanessa out of the Quiet Box to help us. What do you guys say?'
'Absolutely,' Newel affirmed. 'Best idea I've heard all day.'
'I'll second that,' Doren said gladly.
Seth gave the satyrs a doubtful scowl. 'Wait a minute. You guys just think she's pretty.'
'I've been around a long time,' Newel said. 'Vanessa Santoro is not jut pretty.'
'He's right,' Doren agreed. 'She's walking dynamite. My pulse is rising just talking about her.'
'She also might be a traitor,' Seth stressed.
'The lethal temptress,' Newel said with relish. 'Even better.'
'It will definitely spice up the adventure,' Doren encouraged.
'I'm obviously talking to wrong guys,' Seth sighed.
'Believe me,' Newel said cockily. 'you're talking to the right guys. We've been chasing babes since the world was flat.'
Seth rolled his eyes. #Quote by Brandon Mull
Doubtful quotes by Thomas Jefferson
#93. It has been thought that the people are not competent electors of judges learned in the law. But I do not know this to be true, and, if doubtful, we should follow principle. #Quote by Thomas Jefferson

#94. I had trouble putting the book down - at least, it was very hard to do whenever I was forced to by other obligations. I received it in the mail on a Thursday and finished it that following Sunday night (this is FAST for me, given everything else I have on my plate).

Anyway, this book is amazing - I was quite literally floored by the information it contained as it was stuff I hadn't heard about due to selective (heavily slanted against Jackson) media coverage at the time.

I was like a lot of people back then . . . I thought that MJ might have very well been guilty of the accusations and I remember feeling a bit annoyed that he "got off" when the jury found him not guilty.

Well, since then I have realized that my knowledge of all the facts of the case (as well as the 1993 allegations) was sorely lacking and I've done a complete about-face with regard to Michael Jackson.

It's clear to me now that the "accusers" were a bunch of frauds (I do recall feeling a bit skeptical about them at the time but didn't explore those suspicions further, as I was also doubtful about Jackson's innocence). When the testimony and facts are taken into consideration it becomes glaringly obvious that Michael Jackson was an innocent man who was taken advantage of on numerous occasions.

Doubtful quotes by Elly Blake
#95. You speak as if I'm as heavy as an ox," I said. "Last week I was a bundle of sticks.""You're still too thin.""Perhaps if I gain some weight, you won't call me a stick anymore.""You may hope to one day be a branch."I glanced at him sharply, unable to repress a little flutter of delight that he was bothering to joke with me."A log, even," I suggested."Doubtful," he said wryly. #Quote by Elly Blake
Doubtful quotes by Chris Wraight
#96. These things were in the past now, many long years ago, though the memory remained as solid and present as his heartbeats. Time's passage had made the events seem almost crazed, hyper-real, stretched across a surreal dreamscape that felt more like a skjald's embellished saga than the intact past. Perhaps it had not happened like that. Perhaps the Lion had taken his Stormbirds to the Tyrant's fortress, and he himself had teleported in. Perhaps it had not been Ogvai there, but Gunn, or someone else. Had Bjorn been there too? It was a long time ago, so doubtful, but Bjorn seemed to always have been there, right from the start, just waiting for his time to come to maturity. #Quote by Chris Wraight
Doubtful quotes by F Scott Fitzgerald
#97. My God, she's good-looking!" said Mr. Sandwood, who was just over thirty.
"Good-looking!" cried Mr. Hedrick contemptuously, "she always looks as if she wanted to be kissed! Turning those big cow-eyes on every calf in town!"
It was doubtful if Mr. Hedrick intended a reference to the maternal instinct. #Quote by F Scott Fitzgerald
Doubtful quotes by Vicente Aleixandre
#98. I would say a few words
in your ear. A doubtful man has little faith.
Live a long time and it gets dark, and suddenly you know you don't
know yourself.
But I'd say them even so. Since my eyes repeat what they take in:
your beauty, your name, the river's sound, the woods, the soul on its own. #Quote by Vicente Aleixandre
Doubtful quotes by Mark Twain
#99. The man who sets out to carry a cat by its tail learns something that will always be useful and which never will grow dim or doubtful. #Quote by Mark Twain
Doubtful quotes by Thomas Jefferson
#100. But, you may ask, if the two departments [i.e., federal and state] should claim each the same subject of power, where is the common umpire to decide ultimately between them? In cases of little importance or urgency, the prudence of both parties will keep them aloof from the questionable ground; but if it can neither be avoided nor compromised, a convention of the States must be called to ascribe the doubtful power to that department which they may think best. #Quote by Thomas Jefferson
Doubtful quotes by Bayard Taylor
#101. The Poet's leaves are gathered one by one,
In the slow process of the doubtful years. #Quote by Bayard Taylor
Doubtful quotes by Simone Weil
#102. But nothing of all that the peoples of Europe have produced is worth the first known poem to have appeared among them. Perhaps they will rediscover that epic genius when they learn how to accept the fact that nothing is sheltered from fate, how never to admire might, or hate the enemy, or to despise sufferers. It is doubtful if this will happen soon. #Quote by Simone Weil
Doubtful quotes by Gyalwa Dokhampa
#103. It is important to be considerate of the future, but when we invest all of our present in our future hopes, we are placing a lot of value on what is inevitably in doubt. #Quote by Gyalwa Dokhampa
Doubtful quotes by Thomas Jefferson
#104. The whole history of these books (i.e. the Gospels) is so defective and doubtful that it seems vain to attempt minute enquiry into it: and such tricks have been played with their text, and with the texts of other books relating to them, that we have a right, from that cause, to entertain much doubt what parts of them are genuine. In the New Testament there is internal evidence that parts of it have proceeded from an extraordinary man; and that other parts are of the fabric of very inferior minds. It is as easy to separate those parts, as to pick out diamonds from dunghills. #Quote by Thomas Jefferson
Doubtful quotes by Seneca.
#105. Life is divided into three parts: what was, what is and what shall be. Of these three periods, the present is short, the future is doubtful and the past alone is certain. #Quote by Seneca.

Doubtful quotes by Thomas Merton
#107. I am beginning to realize that "sanity" is no longer a value or an end in itself. If modern people were a little less sane, a little more doubtful, a little more aware of their absurdities and contradictions, perhaps there might be the possibility of their survival. #Quote by Thomas Merton
Doubtful quotes by Francois De La Rochefoucauld

Doubtful quotes by Rebecca West

Doubtful quotes by Toni Sorenson

Doubtful quotes by Franz Kafka
#111. to be sure, all that pointless standing about and waiting day after day always starting all over again without any prospect of change, will wear a man down and make him doubtful, and ultimately incapable of anything but that despairing standing about. #Quote by Franz Kafka
Doubtful quotes by P.G. Wodehouse
#112. It soon became apparent that the light of the lamp, though bestowing the doubtful privilege of a clearer view of Mr. Repetto's face, held certain disadvantages. Scarcely had the staff of Cosy Moments reached the faint yellow pool of light, in the centre of which Mr. Repetto reclined, than, with a suddenness which caused them to leap into the air, there sounded from the darkness down the road the crack-crack-crack of a revolver. Instantly from the opposite direction came other shots. Three bullets flicked grooves in the roadway almost at Billy's feet. The Kid gave a sudden howl. Psmith's hat, suddenly imbued with life, sprang into the air and vanished, whirling into the night. #Quote by P.G. Wodehouse
Doubtful quotes by P.D. James
#113. It is doubtful whether Mrs Bennet missed the company of her second daughter, but her husband certainly did. Elizabeth had always been his favourite child. #Quote by P.D. James
Doubtful quotes by Earl Warren
#114. In these days, it is doubtful that any child may reasonably be expected to succeed in life if he is denied the opportunity of an education. #Quote by Earl Warren
Doubtful quotes by Hermann Hesse
#115. It would be wholly impossible for me to say whether this cloudy, silently disturbed, unraveled sky is mirrored in my soul or the reverse, whether or not I read the image of my own inner life in this sky. Sometimes everything is so completely uncertain! There are days when I am convinced that no man on earth can recognize certain moods of air and cloud, certain tones of color, certain fragrances and movements of moisture as finely, as exactly, and as truly as I can, with my old, nervous sense of poet and wanderer. And then again, as today, it can be doubtful to me whether I have seen, heard, and smelled anything after all, whether everything that I took to be true is not merely an image cast outward, the image of my inner life. #Quote by Hermann Hesse
Doubtful quotes by Rita Hayworth
#116. Increasingly, stars are recruited from the ranks of professional models, with the result that today's starlets are better dressed and better groomed than ever before, though it is doubtful if they are better actresses. #Quote by Rita Hayworth
Doubtful quotes by Judith Levine
#117. Man-hating is everywhere, but everywhere it is twisted and transformed, disguised, tranquilized, and qualified. It coexists, never peacefully, with the love, desire, respect, and need women also feel for men. Always man-hating is shadowed by its milder, more diplomatic and doubtful twin, ambivalence. #Quote by Judith Levine
Doubtful quotes by Anthony Powell
#118. A future marriage, or a past one, may be investigated and explained in terms of writing by one of its parties, but it is doubtful whether an existing marriage can ever be described directly in the first person and convey a sense of reality. Even those writers who suggest some of the substance of married life best, stylise heavily, losing the subtlety of the relationship at the price of a few accurately recorded, but isolated, aspects. To think at all objectively about one's own marriage is impossible, while a balanced view of other people's marriage is almost equally hard to achieve with so much information available, so little to be believed. Objectivity is not, of course, everything in writing; but, even after one has cast objectivity aside, the difficulties of presenting marriage are inordinate. Its forms are at once so varied, yet so constant, providing a kaleidoscope, the colours of which are always changing, always the same. The moods of a love affair, the contradictions of friendship, the jealousy of business partners, the fellow feeling of opposed commanders in total war, these are all in their way to be charted. Marriage, partaking of such – and a thousand more – dual antagonisms and participations, finally defies definition. #Quote by Anthony Powell
Doubtful quotes by Sylvia Plath
#119. All, all, becomes profitable. Education is of the most satisfying and available nature. I am at Smith! Which two years ago was a doubtful dream - and that fortuitous change of dream to reality has led me to desire more, and to lash myself onward - onward. #Quote by Sylvia Plath
Doubtful quotes by Mo Anderson
#120. When you face tough times but keep on going; when you're discouraged and doubtful, but still show up; when you are not sure of what to do, but you give it you best anyway--you will, in the end, succeed. Just be willing to do whatever it takes. #Quote by Mo Anderson
Doubtful quotes by Rene Descartes
#121. ...we ought also to consider as false all that is doubtful. #Quote by Rene Descartes
Doubtful quotes by William S. Burroughs
#122. Take a shot in front of D.L. Probing for a vein in my dirty bare foot ... Junkies have no shame ... They are impervious to the repugnance of others. It is doubtful if shame can exist in the absence of sexual libido ... The junky's shame disappears with his nonsexual sociability which is also dependent on libido ... #Quote by William S. Burroughs
Doubtful quotes by Marguerite Yourcenar
#123. I have no children, nor is that a regret. To be sure, in time of weakness and fatigue, when one lacks the courage of one's convictions, I have sometimes reproached myself for not having taken the precaution to engender a son, to follow me. But such a vain regret rests upon two hypotheses, equally doubtful: first, that a son necessarily continues us, and second, that the strange mixture of good and evil, that mass of minute and odd particularities which make up a person, deserves continuation. #Quote by Marguerite Yourcenar
Doubtful quotes by Niccolo Machiavelli
#124. There is nothing more difficult to plan, more doubtful of success, nor more dangerous to manage than the creation of a new order of things ... Whenever his enemies have occasion to attack the innovator they do so with the passion of partisans, while the others defend him sluggishly so that the innovator and his party alike are vulnerable. #Quote by Niccolo Machiavelli
Doubtful quotes by Prem Jagyasi
#125. When you feel too positive to be doubtful, too optimistic to be fearful, and too determined to be defeated, you are undeniably on the way to success. #Quote by Prem Jagyasi
Doubtful quotes by Md. Ziaul Haque
#126. As the soul does not have a brain, it cannot work according to its own wish. Obviously, it will not be proper to say that the soul will enter another body after the death of a person. Hence, the concept of 'rebirth' or 'reincarnation' seems doubtful! #Quote by Md. Ziaul Haque
Doubtful quotes by Osho
#127. So if you want to prove something, it shows that you are doubtful about it. You want to destroy your doubt through others' eyes, through their opinions. #Quote by Osho
Doubtful quotes by Richard Wright
#128. A writer who hasn't written anything worth-while is a most doubtful person. #Quote by Richard Wright
Doubtful quotes by Publilius Syrus
#129. In doubtful matters boldness is everything. #Quote by Publilius Syrus
Doubtful quotes by R.J. Childerhose
#130. There are old pilots and there are bold pilots', goes the saying, 'there are no old bold pilots'. Hal never qualified as old. He'd survived his fuel tank blunder; his next mistake killed him.
In the years that followed, other pilot friends and acquaintances were killed in flying accidents. We were never ready; the news always shocked. Whether we learned from these shocks is doubtful; every pilot is certain that Death will never find him. #Quote by R.J. Childerhose
Doubtful quotes by Ken Liu
#131. The universe is full of echoes and shadows, the afterimages and last words of dead civilizations that have lost the struggle against entropy. Fading ripples in the cosmic background radiation, it is doubtful if most, or any, of these messages will ever be deciphered. Likewise, most of our thoughts and memories are destined to fade, to disappear, to be consumed by the very act of choosing and living. That is not a cause for sorrow, sweetheart. It is the fate of every species to disappear into the void that is the heat death of the universe. But long before then, the thoughts of any intelligent species worthy of the name will become as grand as the universe itself. #Quote by Ken Liu
Doubtful quotes by Tony Leuzzi
#132. [A]rt can't ever be programmatic ... it needs on the contrary to be complicating, subtle, questioning, doubtful and doubting. #Quote by Tony Leuzzi
Doubtful quotes by Jamal Nazrul Islam
#133. If all astronomical processes cease, how will the passage of time manifest itself? It is doubtful if vacuum fluctuations can provide a clock for the recording of time. Will time itself come to a stop? Is this a meaningful question? Such questions are difficult to answer. #Quote by Jamal Nazrul Islam
Doubtful quotes by Czesław Miłosz
#134. At the same time, he expressed accurately and powerfully the state of mind of the countless underground fighters dying in the battle against Nazism. Why did they throw their lives into the scale? Why did they accept torture and death? They had no point of support like the Fuhrer for the Germans or the New Faith for the Communists. It is doubtful whether most of them believed in Christ. It could only have been loyalty, loyalty to something called fatherland or honor, but something stronger than any name. In one of his stories, a young boy, tortured by the police and knowing that he will be shot, gives the name of his friend because he is afraid to die alone. They meet before the firing squad, and the betrayed forgives his betrayer. This forgiveness cannot be justified by any utilitarian ethic; there is no reason to forgive traitors. Had this story been written by a Soviet author, the betrayed would have turned away with disdain from the man who had succumbed to base weakness. #Quote by Czesław Miłosz
Doubtful quotes by George Wald
#135. The only use for an atomic bomb is to keep somebody else from using one. #Quote by George Wald
Doubtful quotes by Jonathan Agnew
#136. It is doubtful that anyone has contributed more in a lifetime to the overall coverage of cricket than Christopher Martin-Jenkins. #Quote by Jonathan Agnew
Doubtful quotes by Lisa Bedrick
#137. Naturally all of us don't think we deserve very much. We don't believe that things will go well for us in the future, generally because they may not have in the past. Our natural bent is to expect the worst. Our natural tendency is to be negative and doubtful. It is actually very hard to be positive. It takes faith to be positive and believe that good things are in our future. #Quote by Lisa Bedrick
Doubtful quotes by Eric Metaxas

Doubtful quotes by John Cowper Powys
#140. We have at any rate one advantage over Time and Space. We think them whereas it is extremely doubtful whether they think us! #Quote by John Cowper Powys
Doubtful quotes by Washington Irving
#141. How convenient it would be to many of our great men and great families of doubtful origin, could they have the privilege of the heroes of yore, who, whenever their origin was involved in
obscurity, modestly announced themselves descended from a god. #Quote by Washington Irving
Doubtful quotes by Eric Metaxas
#142. The Americans speak so much about freedom in their sermons. Freedom as a possession is a doubtful thing for a church; freedom must be won under the compulsion of a necessity. Freedom for the church comes from the necessity of the Word of God. Otherwise it becomes arbitrariness and ends in a great many new ties. #Quote by Eric Metaxas
Doubtful quotes by Guy De Maupassant
#143. Everything is false, everything is possible, everything is doubtful. #Quote by Guy De Maupassant
Doubtful quotes by James Joyce
#144. He lived at a little distance from his body, regarding his own acts with doubtful side-glances. He had an odd autobiographical habit which led him to compose in his mind from time to time a short sentence about himself containing a subject in the third person and a verb in the past tense. #Quote by James Joyce
Doubtful quotes by Michael Cunningham
#145. Who wouldn't want to fuck these people up? Which of us does not understand, in our own less presentable depths, the demons and wizards compelled to persecute human mutations clearly meant, by deities thinking only of their own entertainment, to make almost everyone feel even lonelier and homelier, more awkward, more doubtful and blamed, than we actually are? #Quote by Michael Cunningham
Doubtful quotes by John Locke
#146. There is no such way to gain admittance, or give defence to strange and absurd Doctrines, as to guard them round about with Legions of obscure, doubtful, and undefin'd Words. #Quote by John Locke
Doubtful quotes by Ron Koertge
#147. She's selling CDs on the corner,
fifty cents to any stoner,
any homeboy with a boner.

Sleet and worse - the weather's awful.
Will she live? It's very doubtful.
Life out here is never healthful.

She puts a CD in her Sony.
It's the about the pony
and a pie with pepperoni

and a mom with warm, clean hands
who doesn't bring home guys from bands
or make some sickening demands.

The cold wind bites like icy snakes.
She tries to move but merely shakes.
Some thief leans down and simply takes.

Her next CD's called Land Of Food.
No one there can be tattooed
or mumble things that might be crude

and everything to eat is free,
there's always a big Christmas tree
and crystal bowls of potpourri.

She's weak but still she play one more:
She's on a beach with friends galore.
They scamper down the sandy shore

to watch the towering waves cascade
and marvel at the cute mermaids
who call to her and serenade.

She can't resist. the water's fine.
The rocks are like a kind of shrine.
The foam goes down like scarlet wine.

One cop stands up and says, "She's gone."
The other shakes his head and yawns.
It's barely 10:00, and life goes on. #Quote by Ron Koertge
Doubtful quotes by Patti Roberts
#148. Joshua to Angela: "Please, Angela, do it for me ... and you never know you just might have fun."
She looked at him warily. "I find that highly doubtful, Josh."
"Well how will you know unless you actually try it?"
"I just know. Do you have to drink a hot fish milkshake to know you aren't going to like it?" She asked. #Quote by Patti Roberts
Doubtful quotes by Claes Oldenburg
#149. Because my work is naturally non-meaningful, the meaning found in it will remain doubtful and inconsistent - which is the way it should be. All that I care about is that, like any startling piece of nature, it should be capable of stimulating meaning. #Quote by Claes Oldenburg
Doubtful quotes by Wes Jackson
#150. It is doubtful that the dissection of living animals and plants could be done by those who believe them to be holy. A pantheist would not view trees as so many board feet in the manner a Christian would. A pantheist would be less likely to measure the number of acre feet coming over a waterfall than his Christian descendent, centuries later who had become a scientist. That which is sacred would be handled with a certain reverence. #Quote by Wes Jackson
Doubtful quotes by G.K. Chesterton
#151. There is no such thing as education. The thing is merely a loose phrase for the passing on to others of whatever truth or virtue we happen to have ourselves. It is typical of our time that the more doubtful we are about the value of philosophy, the more certain we are about the value of education. That is to say, the more doubtful we are about whether we have any truth, the more certain we are (apparently) that we can teach it to our children. #Quote by G.K. Chesterton
Doubtful quotes by Thomas More
#152. Men be so foolish as to have delight and pleasure in the doubtful glistering of a trifling little stone, which may behold any of the stars or else the sun itself. #Quote by Thomas More
Doubtful quotes by Earl Warren
#153. It is doubtful that congress would pass the Bill of Rights if it were introduced today. #Quote by Earl Warren
Doubtful quotes by R.D. Laing
#154. The human mind has to ask "Who, what, whence, whither, why am I?" And it is very doubtful if the human mind can answer any of these questions. #Quote by R.D. Laing
Doubtful quotes by Brother Lawrence
#155. That we need only to recognize GOD intimately present with us, to address ourselves to Him every moment, that we may beg His assistance for knowing His will in things doubtful, and for rightly performing those which we plainly see He requires of us, offering them to Him before we do them, and giving Him thanks when we have done. #Quote by Brother Lawrence
Doubtful quotes by Charlotte Bronte
#156. The same hostile roof now again rose before me; my prospects were doubtful yet; and I had yet an aching heart: I still felt as a wanderer on the face of the earth; but I experienced firmer trust in myself and my own powers, and less withering dread of oppression. The gaping wound of my wrongs too, was now quite healed; and the flame of resentment extinguished." (Bronte, p.264)

"A sneer, however, whether covert or open, had now no longer that power over me it once possessed; as I sat between my cousins, I was surprised to find how easy I felt under the total neglect of the one and the semi-sarcastic attentions of the other--Eliza did not mortify, nor Georgiana ruffle me. The fact was, I had other things to think about within the last few months feelings had been stirred in me so much more potent than any they could raise--pains and pleasures so much more acute and exquisite had been excited, than any it was in their power to inflict or bestow--that their airs gave me no concern either for good or bad. #Quote by Charlotte Bronte
Doubtful quotes by Mark Twain
#157. As I have said before, I never had any large respect for good spelling. That is my feeling yet. Before the spelling-book came with its arbitrary forms, men unconsciously revealed shades of their characters, and also added enlightening shades of expression to what they wrote by their spelling, and so it is possible that the spelling-book has been a doubtful benevolence to us. #Quote by Mark Twain
Doubtful quotes by Gary Wobeser
#158. For some reason there is a tendency to assume that one wild animal is a suitable model for another related species, whereas similar evidence would not be acceptable in human or veterinary medicine. For example, Shulaw etal. (1986) developed a serologic test to detect antibodies to Mycobacterium aviumssp. paratuberculosisin white-tailed deer, but determined the validity of the test "in deer" by using samples from infected sika and fallow deer. It is doubtful that a test developed to detect disease in humans would be accepted for use in public health circles, if its validity had been established by using squirrel monkeys and baboons! #Quote by Gary Wobeser
Doubtful quotes by John Dryden
#159. Dim as the borrowed beams of moons and stars
To lonely, weary, wandering travelers,
Is Reason to the soul; and, as on high
Those rolling fires discover but the sky,
Not light us here, so Reason's glimmering ray
Was lent, not to assure our doubtful way,
But guide us upward to a better day. #Quote by John Dryden
Doubtful quotes by Charlotte Bronte
#160. I think if Eternity held torment, its form would not be fiery rack, nor its nature, despair. I think that on a certain day amongst those days which never dawned, and will not set, an angel entered Hades - stood, shone, smiled, delivered a prophecy of conditional pardon, kindled a doubtful hope of bliss to come, not now, but at a day and hour unlooked for, revealed in his own glory and grandeur the height and compass of his promise: spoke thus - then towering, became a star, and vanished into his own Heaven. His legacy was suspense - a worse boon than despair. #Quote by Charlotte Bronte
Doubtful quotes by T.F. Hodge
#161. Manifestation blossoms when we turn down or tune out doubtful noise. #Quote by T.F. Hodge
Doubtful quotes by C. JoyBell C.
#162. What does it mean to be the master of your own soul, the captain of your own mind? It means that you keep the final say on what you think, feel and do. No one fearful thought can overtake you, no one doubtful feeling can overthrow you from your path, no one memory of pain can turn you away from what is meant for you now; because when the waves of doubt come and the winds of fear blow and the rains of pain fall and feel like they're stinging you again - you say no. You say no. You say that you will be the master of your vessel and you will tell your mind to stay the course, you will tell your heart to stay fixed, you will tell your skin that it knows the touch of silken balms. You are the captain of your own ship. #Quote by C. JoyBell C.
Doubtful quotes by Margaret Mahy
#163. For in some ways the world was like a shopping centre, and he himself was a doubtful customer, often ineffectual, being talked into buying things he didn't want, things indeed which nobody in their right mind would want to buy. #Quote by Margaret Mahy
Doubtful quotes by Nicole Krauss
#164. I, too, like to read. Once a month, I go to the local branch. For myself, I pick a novel and, for Bruno, with his cataracts, a book on tape. At first Bruno was doubtful. "What am I supposed to do with this?" he said, looking at the box set of "Anna Karenina" as if I'd handed him an enema. And yet. A day or two later I was going about my business when a voice from above bellowed, ALL HAPPY FAMILIES RESEMBLE ONE ANOTHER, nearly giving me a conniption. After that, he listened to whatever I'd brought him at top volume and then returned it to me without comment. One afternoon, I came back from the library with Ulysses. For a month straight he listened. He had a habit of pressing the stop button and rewinding when he hadn't fully grasped something. INELUCTABLE MODALITY OF THE VISIBLE: AT LEAST THAT. Pause, rewind. INELUCTABLE MODALITY OF THE. Pause, rewind. INELUCTABLE MODALITY. Pause. INELUCT. #Quote by Nicole Krauss

Doubtful quotes by Aidan Chambers
#166. Things it helps me to remember
When in a bad mood, keep quiet or still.
Baggy jumpers don't suit you.
When you're tired you get doubtful.
Difficulties come in spurts.
Listen to the echo of your own voice. Avoid be strident.
All aeroplanes go through clouds during their journeys. So do people during theirs.
Often greater clarity comes out of confusion. You have to be puzzled before you find a solution.
PMS often brings on a crisis of confidence.
Ordinariness is restful.
If someone is explosive in front of you, be silent. If you feel explosive, be silent. #Quote by Aidan Chambers
Doubtful quotes by Marcus Aurelius
#167. In the life of a man, his time is but a moment, his being an incessant flux, his sense a dim rushlight, his body a prey of worms, his soul an unquiet eddy, his fortune dark, his fame doubtful. In short, all that is body is as coursing waters, all that is of the soul as dreams and vapors. #Quote by Marcus Aurelius
Doubtful quotes by Barack Obama
#168. I would not be running for President if I didn't believe with all my heart that this is what the vast majority of Americans want for this country. This union may never be perfect, but generation after generation has shown that it can always be perfected. And today, whenever I find myself feeling doubtful or cynical about this possibility, what gives me the most hope is the next generation - the young people whose attitudes and beliefs and openness to change have already made history in this election. #Quote by Barack Obama
Doubtful quotes by Seneca The Younger
#169. He who tenders doubtful safety to those in trouble refuses it. #Quote by Seneca The Younger
Doubtful quotes by Charles Haddon Spurgeon
#170. Past experiences are doubtful food for Christians; a present coming to Christ alone can give us joy and comfort. #Quote by Charles Haddon Spurgeon
Doubtful quotes by Eric Samuel Timm
#171. It rains on everyone.
It may be storming but there is a covering.
Life may be challenging, but there is a covering.
It may seem impossible, hopeless, doubtful, fear-ridden, and pain-laden, but there is a covering.
There are other umbrellas, but only one is red with the blood of Jesus. We need to love Jesus more than the noise. #Quote by Eric Samuel Timm
Doubtful quotes by C.S. Forester
#172. Though there are very serious disadvantages about being a true believer. Who would want four wives at any time, especially when one pays for the doubtful privilege by abstaining from wine? #Quote by C.S. Forester
Doubtful quotes by Pliny The Elder
#173. Nature makes us buy her presents at the price of so many sufferings that it is doubtful whether she deserves most the name of parent or stepmother. #Quote by Pliny The Elder
Doubtful quotes by John Locke
#174. False and doubtful positions, relied upon as unquestionable maxims, keep those who build on them in the dark from truth. Such are usually the prejudices imbibed from education, party, reverence, fashion, interest, et cetera. #Quote by John Locke
Doubtful quotes by Julia Golding
#175. I take it, Professor, this is not only a social visit?" he asked, his voice almost normal.

"No, of course not. I've come to ask why on earth you haven't called on me before now?"

Ramil took a step back. "Er . . . well, we've been a bit busy, Professor."

"I can see that for myself. I had a terrible job getting here: they've ringed you off with troops five men deep. I had to crawl through the tunnels and some of them are in a disgusting state." Norling sniffed his robe with a doubtful look.

"But why you did not think to ask the resistance for aid is beyond me. We can be immensely helpful to you."

Ramil struck his forehead with the palm of his hand. "Stupid! I should have been drowned at birth," he muttered.

"Oh, I wouldn't go that far," said Norling generously. "I don't think it's too late. In fact, I'd say that you've managed very well without me. #Quote by Julia Golding
Doubtful quotes by Stewart Edward White
#176. Why should we all act so like children? Because we are? Yes, I suppose so." She made a humorous grimace. "But even then, why?" She pondered this for some time. "I suppose it was worth while-all those things I made-in a way," she mused, "and I suppose I wouldn't have made them, otherwise." She looked doubtful. "Is that it? So we will do the things that would not seem worth while-if we stopped to think?"...Yes, that was it! #Quote by Stewart Edward White
Doubtful quotes by Billy Graham
#177. Golden years' must have been coined by the young. It is doubtful that anyone over seventy would have described this phase of life with such a symbolic word. #Quote by Billy Graham
Doubtful quotes by J.R.R. Tolkien
#178. I am doubtful myself about the undertaking. Part of the attraction of the L.R. is, I think, due to the glimpses of a large history in the background: an attraction like that of viewing far off an unvisited island, or seeing the towers of a distant city gleaming in a sunlit mist. To go there is to destroy the magic, unless new unattainable vistas are again revealed. Also many of the older legends are purely 'mythological', and nearly all are grim and tragic: a long account of the disasters that destroyed the beauty of the Ancient World, from the darkening of Valinor to the Downfall of Numenor and the flight of Elendil. #Quote by J.R.R. Tolkien
Doubtful quotes by Toba Beta
#179. Doubtful heart weakens mind. #Quote by Toba Beta
Doubtful quotes by Marie Brennan
#180. I spoke with the assurance of a young woman who thought her experience with natural history and ad hoc education in other subjects more than qualified her to hold forth on topics she knew nothing about at all. The truth is that any such comparison is far more complicated and doubtful than I presented it that evening; but it is also true that no one in my audience knew any more about it than I did, and most of them knew less. My assertion was therefore allowed to stand unchallenged. For #Quote by Marie Brennan
Doubtful quotes by Mark Twain
#181. The person that had took a bull by the tail once had learnt sixty or seventy times as much as a person that hadn't, and said a person that started in to carry a cat home by the tail was getting knowledge that was always going to be useful to him, and warn't ever going to grow dim or doubtful. Chances are, he isn't likely to carry the cat that way again, either. But if he wants to, I say let him! #Quote by Mark Twain
Doubtful quotes by Yu Wo
#182. While I was contemplating what to do, Storm's voice came from behind me. "Sun, could you come and chat with me for a while ?"
"Brother Storm, would you like to talk about the God of Light's benevolence or the God of Light's devotion ?"
Of course I would ! I was actually trying to find someone, anyone, to talk to so that I could pass some time not waving, so that my subsequent waving speed could be increased slightly. However, I never thought that Storm would actually initiate a conversation with me.
But Storm initiating a conversation with me is a strange thing ; he always says that talking to me for one minute is about as exhausting as winking one hundred times. We only need to talk for ten minutes for him to have an especially good night's sleep that night, because he would be way too tired.
"We don't need to look for a topic, its fine to just talk about anything ; I just want to pretend to be talking." After Storm's hurried explanation, he saw my doubtful expression and added, "You know, there are hundreds of women on this street right now, and this march will pass by more than ten streets. If I have to wink at every single woman, then at the end of this march, even if I don't go blind, I will still suffer a horrible fate. So, my teacher taught me the technique of handling this march with only one thousand winks !"
"..." Why does this sentence sound so familiar ? #Quote by Yu Wo
Doubtful quotes by Mordecai Richler
#183. If Canada had a soul (a doubtful proposition, Moses thought) then it wasn't to be found in Batoche or the Plains of Abraham or Fort Walsh or Charlottetown or Parliament Hill, but in The Caboose and thousands of bars like it that knit the country together from Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia, to the far side of Vancouver Island. #Quote by Mordecai Richler
Doubtful quotes by George Bernard Shaw
#184. It is very doubtful whether man is enough of a political animal to produce a good, sensible, serious and efficient constitution. All the evidence is against it. #Quote by George Bernard Shaw
Doubtful quotes by Abraham H. Maslow
#185. The person who hasn't conquered, withstood and overcome continues to feel doubtful that he could. This is true not only for external dangers; it holds also for the ability to control and to delay one's own impulses, and therefore to be unafraid of them. #Quote by Abraham H. Maslow
Doubtful quotes by John Calvin
#186. Doubtful prayer is no prayer at all. #Quote by John Calvin
Doubtful quotes by Delmore Schwartz
#187. At This Moment Of Time

Some who are uncertain compel me. They fear
The Ace of Spades. They fear
Loves offered suddenly, turning from the mantelpiece,
Sweet with decision. And they distrust
The fireworks by the lakeside, first the spuft,
Then the colored lights, rising.
Tentative, hesitant, doubtful, they consume
Greedily Caesar at the prow returning,
Locked in the stone of his act and office.
While the brass band brightly bursts over the water
They stand in the crowd lining the shore
Aware of the water beneath Him. They know it. Their eyes
Are haunted by water

Disturb me, compel me. It is not true
That "no man is happy," but that is not
The sense which guides you. If we are
Unfinished (we are, unless hope is a bad dream),
You are exact. You tug my sleeve
Before I speak, with a shadow's friendship,
And I remember that we who move
Are moved by clouds that darken midnight #Quote by Delmore Schwartz
Doubtful quotes by O'Shea Jackson, Jr.
#188. Our trials and our times of pain get the most recognition, but 'Straight Outta Compton' speaks to triumph. When it's doubtful, when nobody is on your side, when your back is against the wall, you triumph and make it through. Showing growth through movies promotes growth. #Quote by O'Shea Jackson, Jr.
Doubtful quotes by Rupertus Meldenius
#189. In necessariis unitas, in dubiis libertas, in omnibus caritas" (In essentials unity, in doubtful things/non-essentials liberty, in all things charity). -Often attributed to John Wesley. #Quote by Rupertus Meldenius
Doubtful quotes by Sallust
#190. All those who offer an opinion on any doubtful point should first clear their minds of every sentiment of dislike, friendship, anger or pity. #Quote by Sallust
Doubtful quotes by Norton Juster
#191. What kind of a place is Expectations?" inquired Milo, unable to see the humor and feeling very doubtful of the little man's sanity.
"Good question, good question," he exclaimed. "Expectations is the place you must always go to before you get to where you're going. Of course, some people never go beyond Expectations, but my job is to hurry them along whether they like it or not. #Quote by Norton Juster

Doubtful quotes by Kelly Creagh
#193. She glanced down at the contents of her plate. Just tell him what it is. Simple. Look at it and say what it is. "Sloppy Joe," she managed.
"Hmm," he said, sounding doubtful. "May he rest in peace. #Quote by Kelly Creagh
Doubtful quotes by Philip Yancey
#194. instruct the ignorant, counsel the doubtful, admonish sinners, bear wrongs patiently, forgive offences willingly, comfort the afflicted, pray for the living and the dead. #Quote by Philip Yancey
Doubtful quotes by F Scott Fitzgerald
#195. The decision as to when to quit, as to when one is merely floundering around and causing other people trouble, has to be made frequently in a lifetime. In youth we are taught the rather simple rule never to quit, because we are presumably following programmes made by people wiser than ourselves. My own conclusion is that when one has embarked on a course that grows increasingly doubtful and one feels the vital forces beginning to be used up, it is best to ask advice if decent advice is in range... #Quote by F Scott Fitzgerald
Doubtful quotes by Harper Lee
#196. It is doubtful that he ever sought for meanings; he merely reared his children as best he could, and in terms of the affection his children felt for him, his best was indeed good: he was never too tired to play Keep-Away; he was never too busy to invent marvelous stories; he was never too absorbed in his own problems to listen earnestly to a tale of woe; every night he read aloud to them until his voice cracked. Atticus #Quote by Harper Lee
Doubtful quotes by R.A. Lafferty
#197. There are certain men who are sacrosanct in history; you touch on the truth of them at your peril. These are such men as Socrates and Plato, Pericles and Alexander, Caesar and Augustus, Marcus Aurelius and Trajan, Martel and Charlemagne, Edward the Confessor and William of Falaise, St. Louis and Richard and Tancred, Erasmus and Bacon, Galileo and Newton, Voltaire and Rousseau, Harvey and Darwin, Nelson and Wellington. In America, Penn and Franklin, Jefferson and Jackson and Lee. There are men better than these who are not sacrosanct, who may be challenged freely. But these men may not be. Albert Pike has been elevated to this sacrosanct company, though of course to a minor rank. To challenge his rank is to be overwhelmed by a torrent of abuse, and we challenge him completely.

Looks are important to these elevated. Albert Pike looked like Michelangelo's Moses in contrived frontier costume. Who could distrust that big man with the great beard and flowing hair and godly glance?
If you dislike the man and the type, then he was pompous, empty, provincial and temporal, dishonest, and murderous. But if you like the man and the type, then he was impressive, untrammeled, a man of the right place and moment, flexible or sophisticated, and firm.
These are the two sides of the same handful of coins.
He stole (diverted) Indian funds and used them to bribe doubtful Indian leaders. He ordered massacres of women and children (exemplary punitive operations). He lied #Quote by R.A. Lafferty
Doubtful quotes by Truman Capote
#198. I should say a student does well to remain one as long as he can. It seems to me very doubtful that formal education could ever harm a potential artist - of course, it won't make him one either. #Quote by Truman Capote
Doubtful quotes by Yukio Mishima
#199. Most people are always doubtful as to whether they are happy or not, cheerful or not. This is the normal state of happiness, as doubt is a most natural thing. #Quote by Yukio Mishima
Doubtful quotes by Edmund Burke
#200. All those instances to be found in history, whether real or fabulous, of a doubtful public spirit, at which morality is perplexed, reason is staggered, and from which affrighted Nature recoils, are their chosen and almost sole examples for the instruction of their youth. #Quote by Edmund Burke
