Conviction quotes by Saul Alinsky
#1. This book will not
contain any panacea or dogma; I detest and fear dogma." ...
"This is not an ideological book except insofar as argument for change,"...
"ideologies tend to be smelted into rigid dogmas claiming exclusive possession of the truth"...
" An organizer working in and for an open society is in an ideological dilemma. To begin with, he does not have a fixed truth. "...
" In the end he has one conviction - a belief that if people have the power to act, in the long run they will, most of the time, reach the right decisions.
I am not concerned if this faith in people is regarded as a prime truth and therefore a contradiction of what I have already written, for life is a story of contradictions. Believing in people, the radical has the job of organizing them so that they will have the power #Quote by Saul Alinsky
Conviction quotes by Charles Dudley Warner
#2. The chief effect of talk on any subject is to strengthen one's own opinions, and, in fact, one never knows exactly what he does believe until he is warmed into conviction by the heat of attack and defence. #Quote by Charles Dudley Warner
Conviction quotes by Erwin Panofsky
#3. Reform or no reform, he never ceased to promote the interests of St. Denis and the Royal House of France with the same naive, and in his case not entirely unjustified, conviction of their identity with those of the nation and with the Will of God as a modern oil or steel magnate may promote legislation favorable to his company and to his bank as something beneficial to the welfare of this country and to the progress of mankind. #Quote by Erwin Panofsky
Conviction quotes by Doris Lessing
#4. She was well armed with facts from The New Statesman, She was even better armed by the conviction of being in the right, but what is the use of being right if one is faced by the blank, unaltered stare of satisfied ignorance? Martha was so new to the game that she was surprised by Mrs. Buss's calm remark, "Oh, well, everyone's entitled to their ideas." She said it was not a question of ideas, but one of fact. #Quote by Doris Lessing
Conviction quotes by Aron Ra
#5. So secular humanism is not a religion in any sense, legal or otherwise, and neither is atheism. Religion must include a professed conviction, and mythical characters hardly counts as that. So atheism alone is no more a religion than health is a disease. One may as well argue over which brand of car pedestrians drive. #Quote by Aron Ra
Conviction quotes by Mahatma Gandhi
#6. Since satyagraha is a method of conversion and conviction, it seeks never to use the slightest coercion. #Quote by Mahatma Gandhi
Conviction quotes by Ian McEwan
#7. There is a compassion in rational thought that is sometimes missing in religious conviction. #Quote by Ian McEwan
Conviction quotes by Paramahansa Yogananda
#8. Words saturated with sincerity, conviction, faith, and intuition are like highly explosive vibration bombs, which, when set off, shatter the rocks of difficulties and create the change desired. #Quote by Paramahansa Yogananda
Conviction quotes by Mary Barnett Gilson
#9. It is my conviction that in general women are more snobbish and class conscious than men and that these ignoble traits are a product of men's attitude toward women and women's passive acceptance of this attitude. #Quote by Mary Barnett Gilson
Conviction quotes by Patrick Henry
#10. That religion, or the duty which we owe to our Creator, and the manner of discharging it, can be directed only by reason and conviction, not by force or violence; and therefore all men are equally entitled to the free exercise of religion, according to the dictates of the conscience; and it is the mutual duty of all to practice Christian forbearance, love, and charity towards each other. #Quote by Patrick Henry
Conviction quotes by Randy Ribay
#11. Like a tree in the wind, he will bend before the strength of my conviction. #Quote by Randy Ribay

#12. I don't believe you outsource your convictions and principles to people. #Quote by Jeb Bush
Conviction quotes by Calista Fox
#13. Swear you'll come back." More tears poled. Pain lanced through me. "You know I will," he said with conviction. #Quote by Calista Fox
Conviction quotes by John Main
#14. That is the conviction we must come to in our meditation, that the darkness cannot quench the light. #Quote by John Main
Conviction quotes by Amish Tripathi
#15. A lot of people are capable, Neelkanth. What makes a capable person truly dangerous is his conviction. #Quote by Amish Tripathi
Conviction quotes by Carl Jung
#16. The utter failure came at the Crucifixion in the tragic words, 'My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?' If you want to understand the full tragedy of those words you must realize what they meant: Christ saw that his whole life, devoted to the truth according to his best conviction, had been a terrible illusion. He had lived it to the full absolutely sincerely, he had made his honest experiment, but it was nevertheless a compensation. On the cross his mission deserted him. But because he had lived so fully and devotedly he won through to the Resurrection body. #Quote by Carl Jung
Conviction quotes by Alex Kotlowitz
#17. Freedom is like holding a small bird. If you squeeze it too hard, you will kill it. But if you don't hold it firmly enough, it will fly away. Indeed, freedom can be both fragile and elusive, and so-as the McCormick Tribune Freedom Museum so powerfully reminds us-it requires our eternal vigilance, our willingness, our ability, our conviction to stand up for that which we think is right. #Quote by Alex Kotlowitz
Conviction quotes by Daniel Wallace
#18. There is no passion. There is solely obsession.
There is no knowledge. There is solely conviction.
There is no purpose. There is solely will.
There is nothing ...
Only me. #Quote by Daniel Wallace
Conviction quotes by Christopher Zeeman
#19. The scientist has to take 95 per cent of his subject on trust. He has to because he can't possibly do all the experiments, therefore he has to take on trust the experiments all his colleagues and predecessors have done. Whereas a mathematician doesn't have to take anything on trust. Any theorem that's proved, he doesn't believe it, really, until he goes through the proof himself, and therefore he knows his whole subject from scratch. He's absolutely 100 per cent certain of it. And that gives him an extraordinary conviction of certainty, and an arrogance that scientists don't have. #Quote by Christopher Zeeman
Conviction quotes by Hope D. Blackwell
#20. Condemnation is a tool of the enemy, but conviction is God's means of bringing us to repentance. #Quote by Hope D. Blackwell
Conviction quotes by Thomas Brooks
#21. If it is not strong upon your heart to practice what you read, to what end do you read? To increase your own condemnation? If your light and knowledge be not turned into practice, the more knowing a man you are, the more miserable a man you will be in the day of recompense; your light and knowledge will more torment you than all the devils in hell. Your knowledge will be that rod that will eternally lash you, and that scorpion that will forever bite you, and that worm that will everlastingly gnaw you; therefore read, and labor to know that you may do
or else you are undone forever. #Quote by Thomas Brooks
Conviction quotes by Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.
#22. For I say to you in all the sadness of conviction, that to think great thoughts you must be heroes as well as idealists. Only when you have worked alone – when you have felt around you a black gulf of solitude more isolating than that which surrounds the dying man, and in hope and in despair have trusted to your own unshaken will – then only will you have achieved. Thus only can you gain the secret isolated joy of the thinker, who knows that, a hundred years after he is dead and forgotten, men who have never heard of him will be moving to the measure of his thought – the subtle rapture of a postponed power, which the world knows not because it has no external trappings, but which to his prophetic vision is more real than that which commands an army. #Quote by Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.
Conviction quotes by Kevin DeYoung
#23. As a pastor in a Protestant church, my whole ministry centers on the conviction that by grace we are saved through faith. And it's not our faith that delivers us, as if believing something, anything at all were pleasing to God. It's the object of our faith - Christ's life, death, and resurrection - that saves us. #Quote by Kevin DeYoung
Conviction quotes by C.M. Frank
#24. She was an open book. She had nothing to hide. She had an air about her. An air of conviction. She had lived and had no regrets. She was compulsively unapologetic about the choices that she had made. #Quote by C.M. Frank
Conviction quotes by Raymond Carver
#25. It was [John Gardner's] conviction that if the words in the story were blurred because of the author's insensitivity, carelessness, or sentimentality, then the story suffered from a tremendous handicap. But there was something even worse and something that must be avoided at all costs: if the words and the sentiments were dishonest, the author was faking it, writing about things he didn't care about or believe in, then nobody could ever care anything about it. #Quote by Raymond Carver
Conviction quotes by Leonard Peltier
#26. At this writing I can't even shut my lower jaw because of inadequate health care. I can't chew my food, I have trouble walking ... the list goes on. But more than anything I want to go home. If you follow the laws at the time of my conviction I should have been released already. #Quote by Leonard Peltier
Conviction quotes by Erik Larson
#27. On March 30, 1890, an officer of the First National Bank placed a warning in the help-wanted section of the Chicago Tribune, to inform female stenographers of "our growing conviction that no thoroughly honorable business-man who is this side of dotage ever advertises for a lady stenographer who is a blonde, is good-looking, is quite alone in the city, or will transmit her photograph. All such advertisements upon their face bear the marks of vulgarity, nor do we regard it safe for any lady to answer such unseemly utterances." The #Quote by Erik Larson
Conviction quotes by Carlos Ruiz Zafon
#28. You seem very sure of yourself, Daniel.'
I, who was never even sure what the time was, nodded with the conviction of the
ignorant. #Quote by Carlos Ruiz Zafon
Conviction quotes by Leo Tolstoy
#29. She was so plain that neither of them could think of her as a rival, so they began dressing her with perfect sincerity, and with the naive and firm conviction women have that dress can make a face pretty. #Quote by Leo Tolstoy
Conviction quotes by Mishka Shubaly
#30. Never make the mistake of thinking that alcoholics are weak, because it took an incredible amount of internal strength and conviction in order for me to keep drinking despite the growing mountain of evidence against it. #Quote by Mishka Shubaly
Conviction quotes by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
#31. There were people thrice her size on the Trenton platform and she looked admiringly at one of them, a woman in a very short skirt. She thought nothing of slender legs shown off in miniskirts
it was safe and easy, after all, to display legs of which the world approved
but the fat woman's act was about the quiet conviction that one shared only with oneself, a sense of rightness that others failed to see. #Quote by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Conviction quotes by Benjamin Graham
#32. Traditionally the investor has been the man with patience and the courage of his convictions who would buy when the harried or disheartened speculator was selling. #Quote by Benjamin Graham
Conviction quotes by Edward Snowden
#33. The freedom of a country can only be measured by its respect for the rights of its citizens, and it's my conviction that these rights are in fact limitations of state power that define exactly where and when a government may not infringe into that domain of personal or individual freedoms that during the American Revolution was called "liberty" and during the Internet Revolution is called "privacy. #Quote by Edward Snowden
Conviction quotes by Annie Chua
#34. It takes a strong gut to reach for a dream. With an extra ordinary effort and a strong conviction to God, nothing is impossible. Indeed, God can move mountains, create stars, new stars like me, walk on the water and can do anything powerful. It does not matter. Dreams can be achieved if you truly believe in Him and in thy self. Put Him in the center of your Life and no ordinary means can stop you. God is always good. #Quote by Annie Chua
Conviction quotes by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel
#35. But if a good heart, a good intention, a subjective conviction are declared to be the sources from which actions derive their worth, then there is no longer any hypocrisy or evil at all; for whatever someone does, he can always turn it into something good through reflecting on his good intentions and motives, and so the moment of his convictions renders it good. #Quote by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel
Conviction quotes by Renee Ahdieh
#36. Her conviction wavered further. "I told you; don't try to own me."
"I don't want to own you."

She swiveled her neck to meet his gaze. "Then never speak of sending me away again. I am not yours to do with as you will."

Khalid's features smoothed knowingly. "How right you are. You are not mine." He dropped his palm from the door. "I am yours. #Quote by Renee Ahdieh
Conviction quotes by Al Gore
#37. The United States has an absolute, uncompromising commitment to Israel's security and an absolute conviction that Israel alone must decide the steps necessary to ensure that security. That is Israel's prerogative. We accept that. We endorse that. Whatever Israel decides cannot, will not, will never, not ever, alter our fundamental commitment to her security. #Quote by Al Gore
Conviction quotes by David Foster Wallace
#38. It's actually not true that our literary culture is nihilistic, at least not in the radical sense of Turgenev's Bazarov. For there are certain tendencies we believe are bad, qualities we hate and fear. Among these are sentimentality, naivete, archaism, fanaticism. It would probably be better to call our own art's culture now one of congenital skepticism. Our intelligentsia distrust strong belief, open conviction. Material passion is one thing, but idealogical passion disgusts us on some deep level. We believe that ideology is now the province of the rival SIGs and PACs all trying to get their slice of the big green pie...and, looking around us, we see that indeed it is so. But Frank's Dostoevsky would point out (or more like hop up and down and shake his fist and fly at us and shout) that if this is so, it's at least partly because we have abandoned the field. That we've abandoned it to fundamentalists whose pitiless rigidity and eagerness to judge show that they're clueless about the "Christian values" they would impose on others. #Quote by David Foster Wallace
Conviction quotes by Hill Harper
#39. Once you have a felony conviction on your record, one of the most difficult things to do is to break the cycle of recidivism. #Quote by Hill Harper
Conviction quotes by Jeremy Camp
#40. How my emotions starred as I played! During one of this tug-of-war contest between knowing right and doing wrong, I wrote the words to a song on my own for the first time. #Quote by Jeremy Camp
Conviction quotes by Richard P. Belcher
#41. Theologically, from the very beginning of his Christian life, he was a Calvinist. This was the doctrinal conviction, no doubt of his home church in Nottingham. Pink does show a change in the basic framework of his theology in the passing of time (from dispensationalism to Reformed theology), but there is no evidence of any change in the matter of his Calvinistic convictions. #Quote by Richard P. Belcher
Conviction quotes by Ayn Rand
#42. There can be no compromise on basic principles. There can be no compromise on moral issues. There can be no compromise on matters of knowledge, of truth, of rational conviction. #Quote by Ayn Rand
Conviction quotes by Philip Ziegler
#43. Fourteenth-century men seemed to have regarded their doctor in rather the same way as the twentieth-century men are apt to regard their priest, with tolerance for someone who was doing his best and the respect due to a man of learning but also with a nagging and uncomfortable conviction that he was largely irrelevant to the real and urgent problems of their lives. #Quote by Philip Ziegler
Conviction quotes by Andrew Murray
#44. Let every one then that has received this new life, cultivate this great conviction: it is eternal life that works in me: it works with Divine power: I can and shall become what God will have me be: Christ Himself is my life: I have to receive Him every day as my life given by God to me, and He shall be my life in full power. #Quote by Andrew Murray
Conviction quotes by Shirin Ebadi
#45. What is important is that one utilizes one's intellect and not to be 100 percent sure about one's convictions. One should always leave room for doubt. #Quote by Shirin Ebadi
Conviction quotes by Rachel Hartman
#46. That's the secret to performance: conviction. The right note played tentatively still misses its mark; but play boldly and no one will question you. #Quote by Rachel Hartman
Conviction quotes by Friedrich A. Hayek
#47. What our generation is in danger of forgetting is not only that morals are of necessity a phenomenon of individual conduct but also that they can exist only in the sphere in which the individual is free to decide for himself and is called upon voluntarily to sacrifice personal advantage to the observance of a moral rule. Outside the sphere of individual responsibility there is neither goodness nor badness, neither opportunity for moral merit nor the chance of proving one's conviction by sacrificing one's desires to what one thinks right. Only were we ourselves are responsible for our own interests and are free to sacrifice them has our decision moral value. We are neither entitled to be unselfish at someone else's expense nor is there any merit in being unselfish if we have no choice. The members of a society who in all respects are made to do the good things have no title to praise. As Milton said: "If every action which is good or evil in a man of ripe years were under pittance an prescription and compulsion, what were virtue but a name, what praise should then be due to well-doing, what gramercy to be sober, just, or continent?"
Freedom to order our own conduct in the sphere where material circumstances force upon us, and responsibility for the arrangement of our own life according to our own conscience, is the air in which alone moral sense grows and in which moral values are daily re-created in the free decision of the individual. Responsibility, not to a superior, #Quote by Friedrich A. Hayek
Conviction quotes by Brennan Manning
#48. Christianity doesn't deny the reality of suffering and evil ... Our hope ... is not based on the idea that we are going to be free of pain and suffering. Rather, it is based on the conviction that we will triumph over suffering. #Quote by Brennan Manning
Conviction quotes by Fennel Hudson
#49. Walk free from the long shadows cast by small people. #Quote by Fennel Hudson
Conviction quotes by David A. Bednar
#50. The knowledge and spiritual conviction we receive from the Holy Ghost are the result of revelation. #Quote by David A. Bednar
Conviction quotes by Jose Ortega Y Gasset
#51. I have never said that human society ought to be aristocratic, but a great deal more than that. What I have said, and still believe with ever-increasing conviction, is that human society is always, whether it will or no, aristocratic by its very essence, to the extreme that it is a society in the measure that it is aristocratic, and ceases to be such when it ceases to be aristocratic. Of course I am speaking now of society and not of the State. #Quote by Jose Ortega Y Gasset
Conviction quotes by Thomas Hardy
#52. Tess's feminine hope - shall we confess it - had been so obstinately recuperative as to revive in her surreptitious visions of a domiciliary intimacy continued long enough to break down his coldness even against his judgement. Though unsophisticated in the usual sense, she was not incomplete; and it would have denoted deficiency of womanhood if she had not instinctively known what an argument lies in propinquity. Nothing else would save her, she knew, if this failed. It was wrong to hope in what was of the nature of strategy, she said to herself; yet that sort of hope she could not extinguish. His last representation had now been made, and it was, as she said, a new view. She had truly never though so far as that, and his lucid picture of possible offspring who would scorn her was one that brought deadly conviction to an honest heart which was humanitarian to its centre. Sheer experience had already taught her that, in some circumstances, there was one thing better than to lead a good life, and that was to be saved from leading any life whatever. Like all who have been previsioned by suffering, she could, in the words of M. Sully-Prudhomme, hear a penal sentence in the fiat, 'You shall be born,' particularly if addressed to potential issue or hers. #Quote by Thomas Hardy
Conviction quotes by Thomas Robert Malthus
#53. The view which he has given of human life has a melancholy hue,
but he feels conscious that he has drawn these dark tints from a
conviction that they are really in the picture, and not from a jaundiced
eye or an inherent spleen of disposition. #Quote by Thomas Robert Malthus
Conviction quotes by Alan W. Hirshfeld
#54. If there was one overriding element to Faraday's character, it was humility. His 'conviction of deficiency,' as he called it, stemmed in part from his deep religiosity and affected practically every facet of his life. Thus Faraday approached both his science and his everyday conduct unhampered by ego, envy, or negative emotion. In his work, he assumed the inevitability of error and failure; whenever possible, he harnessed these as guides toward further investigation. Faraday adhered to no particular school of scientific thought. Nor did he flinch when a favored hypothesis fell to the rigors of experiment. #Quote by Alan W. Hirshfeld
Conviction quotes by Katharine Fullerton Gerould
#55. Frenchwomen could not dress like Englishwomen without conviction of sin. #Quote by Katharine Fullerton Gerould
Conviction quotes by Alexander Hamilton
#56. The President of the United States would be liable to be impeached, tried, and upon conviction of treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors, removed from office; and would afterwards be liable to prosecution and punishment in the ordinary course of law. The person of the King of Great Britain is sacred and inviolable: There is no constitutional tribunal to which he is amenable, no punishment to which he can be subjected without involving the crisis of a national revolution. #Quote by Alexander Hamilton
Conviction quotes by Ravi Zacharias
#57. Conviction is not merely an opinion. It is something rooted so deeply in the conscience that to change a conviction would be to change the very essence of who you are. #Quote by Ravi Zacharias
Conviction quotes by Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj
#58. Unless you make tremendous efforts, you will not be convinced that effort will take you nowhere. The self is so self-confident that unless it is totally discouraged it will not give up. Mere verbal conviction is not enough. Hard facts alone can show the absolute nothingness of the self-image. #Quote by Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj
Conviction quotes by Henry A. Kissinger
#59. The convictions that leaders have formed before reaching high office are the intellectual capital they will consume as long as they continue in office. #Quote by Henry A. Kissinger
Conviction quotes by Jenny Colgan
#60. I am of the old-fashioned conviction that reading is a pleasure to be carefully guarded at all times #Quote by Jenny Colgan
Conviction quotes by H. P. Blavatsky
#61. True science has no belief," says Dr. Fenwick, in Bulwer-Lytton 's Strange Story; "true science knows but three states of mind: denial, conviction, and the vast interval between the two, which is not belief, but the suspension of judgment." Such, perhaps, was true science in Dr. Fenwick's days. But the true science of our modern times proceeds otherwise; it either denies point-blank, without any preliminary investigation, or sits in the interim, between denial and conviction, and, dictionary in hand, invents new Graeco-Latin appellations for non-existing kinds of hysteria! #Quote by H. P. Blavatsky
Conviction quotes by Phil Vischer
#62. I looked back at the previous 10 years and realized I had spent 10 years trying to convince kids to behave Christianly without actually teaching them Christianity. And that was a pretty serious conviction. You can say, 'Hey kids, be more forgiving because the Bible says so,' or, 'Hey kids, be more kind because the Bible says so!' But that isn't Christianity, it's morality. #Quote by Phil Vischer
Conviction quotes by David Petraeus
#63. I am not a politician, and I will never be, and I say that with absolute conviction. #Quote by David Petraeus
Conviction quotes by F. Sionil Jose
#64. I did not hesitate to tell them that I not only had the authority of facts, but that it was my conviction that our worst enemy was ourselves, our vanity, our pride and our desire for honor. #Quote by F. Sionil Jose
Conviction quotes by Khaled Hosseini
#65. Laila remembered Mammy telling Babi once that she had married a man who had no convictions. Mammy didn't understand. She didn't understand that if she looked into a mirror, she would find the one unfailing conviction of his life looking right back at her. #Quote by Khaled Hosseini
Conviction quotes by Mary Balogh
#66. Youthful dreams are precious things. They ought not to be dashed as foolish and unrealistic just because they are young dreams. Innocence ought not to be destroyed from any callous conviction that a realistic sort of cynicism is better. #Quote by Mary Balogh
Conviction quotes by Ambrose Bierce
#67. PRESBYTERIAN, n. One who holds the conviction that the government authorities of the Church should be called presbyters. #Quote by Ambrose Bierce
Conviction quotes by Novalis
#68. It is the most capricious prejudice to believe that a human being is denied the capacity to be outside himself, to be consciously beyond the senses. He is capable at any moment of being a suprasensual being. Without this he would not be a citizen of the world - he would be an animal. It is true that under these circumstances reflection, the discovery of oneself - is very difficult, since they are so ceaselessly, so necessarily connected with the change in our other circumstances. But the more conscious of these circumstances we can be, the more lively, powerful, and ample is the conviction which derives from them - the belief in true revelations of the spirit. It is not seeing - hearing - feeling - it is a combination of all three - more than all three - a sensation of immediate certainty - a view of my truest, most actual life - thoughts change into laws - wishes are fulfilled. For the weak person the fact of this moment is an article of faith.

The phenomenon becomes especially striking at the sight of many human forms and faces - particularly so on catching sight of many eyes, expressions, movements - on hearing certain words, reading certain passages - at certain views of life, world, and fate. Very many chance incidents, many natural events, particular times of the day and year bring us such experiences. Certain moods are especially favorable to such revelations. Most last only an instant - few linger - fewest of all remain. In this respect there are great diff #Quote by Novalis
Conviction quotes by Daisaku Ikeda
#69. Freedom doesn't mean the absence of all restrictions. It means possessing unshakable conviction in the face of any obstacle. #Quote by Daisaku Ikeda
Conviction quotes by Ralph Waldo Emerson
#70. If you would lift me you must be on higher ground. If you would liberate me you must be free. If you would correct my false view of facts, - hold up to me the same facts in the true order of thought, and I cannot go back from the new conviction. #Quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson
Conviction quotes by Charles R. Swindoll
#71. Convictions are a matter of choice, not force. #Quote by Charles R. Swindoll
Conviction quotes by Zack Love
#72. Love?" Heeb asked, playfully pretending not to know the concept.
"Yeah. The real thing. The conviction that if you had this one woman, all other women would become irrelevant. You'd never again be unhappy. And you'd give up anything to have her and keep her." *Evan* #Quote by Zack Love
Conviction quotes by C.S. Lewis
#73. It is part of the nature of a strong erotic passion - as distinct from a transient fit of appetite - that makes more towering promises than any other emotion. No doubt all our desires makes promises, but not so impressively. To be in love involves the almost irresistible conviction that one will go on being in love until one dies, and that possession of the beloved will confer, not merely frequent ecstasies, but settled, fruitful, deep-rooted, lifelong happiness. Hence all seems to be at stake. If we miss this chance we shall have lived in vain. At the very thought of such a doom we sink into fathomless depths of self-pity.

Unfortunately these promises are found often to be quite untrue. Every experienced adult knows this to be so as regards all erotic passions (except the one he himself is feeling at the moment). We discount the world-without-end pretensions of our friends' amours easily enough. We know that such things sometimes last - and sometimes don't. And when they do last, this is not because they promised at the outset to do so. When two people achieve lasting happiness, this is not solely because they are great lovers but because they are also - I must put it crudely - good people; controlled, loyal, fair-minded, mutually adaptable people.

If we establish a "right to (sexual) happiness" which supersedes all the ordinary rules of behavior, we do so not because of what our passion shows itself to be in experience but because of what it professes #Quote by C.S. Lewis
Conviction quotes by Ryan Reynolds
#74. I don't personally believe that villains exist. Villains are just a way of saying that somebody has an opposing conviction. #Quote by Ryan Reynolds
Conviction quotes by Alice Munro
#75. Sometimes that's just the way it is. You never really know until you try something on. The thing is," she said, with a new, more moderate conviction #Quote by Alice Munro
Conviction quotes by Connie Brockway
#76. If you forget your lines, you had better mumble with conviction. #Quote by Connie Brockway
Conviction quotes by Leonard Ravenhill
#77. There's one thing we need above everything else; it's something we don't talk about these days. We need a mighty avalanche of conviction of sin. #Quote by Leonard Ravenhill
Conviction quotes by John Stuart Mill
#78. What is really inspiriting and ennobling in the doctrine of freewill, is the conviction that we have real power over the formation of our own character; that our will, by influencing some of our circumstances, can modify our future habits or capabilities of willing. #Quote by John Stuart Mill
Conviction quotes by Lucian
#79. The truth is hidden from us. Even if a mere piece of luck brings us straight to it, we shall have no grounded conviction of our success; there are so many similar objects, all claiming to be the real thing. #Quote by Lucian
Conviction quotes by Orison Swett Marden
#80. What is enthusiasm but a passionate belief in what seems to be a high and holy aim, - an unselfish devotion to some noble cause, - a consecration of heart and mind and soul to the attainment of a great object? What is it but an earnest effort to attain the heights of spiritual and intellectual endeavor? What is it but the life, the force, the power, which makes individuals or nations capable of enduring much and waiting long, in the conviction that ultimately the thing they have at heart will be accomplished? #Quote by Orison Swett Marden
Conviction quotes by Mitt Romney
#81. And this President wakes up every morning, looks out across America and is proud to announce, 'It could be worse.' It could be worse? Is that what it means to be an American? It could be worse? Of course not. What defines us as Americans is our unwavering conviction that we know it must be better. #Quote by Mitt Romney
Conviction quotes by Homer
#82. Scepticism is as much the result of knowledge, as knowledge is of scepticism. To be content with what we at present know, is, for the most part, to shut our ears against conviction; since, from the very gradual character of our education, we must continually forget, and emancipate ourselves from, knowledge previously acquired; we must set aside old notions and embrace fresh ones; and, as we learn, we must be daily unlearning something which it has cost us no small labour and anxiety to acquire. #Quote by Homer
Conviction quotes by Anais Nin
#83. More damaging was his conviction that we live by a series of repetitions until the experience is solved, understood, liquidated ... #Quote by Anais Nin
Conviction quotes by George Eliot
#84. I have the conviction that excessive literary production is a social offence. #Quote by George Eliot
Conviction quotes by Philip Doddridge
#85. Religion, in its most general view, is such a Sense of God in the soul, and such a conviction of our obligations to him, and of our dependence upon him, as shall engage us to make it our great care to conduct ourselves in a manner which we have reason to believe will be pleasing to him. #Quote by Philip Doddridge
Conviction quotes by J.M.E. McTaggart
#86. Religion may be best be described as an emotion resting on a conviction of a harmony between ourselves and the universe at large. #Quote by J.M.E. McTaggart
Conviction quotes by Richard Sibbes
#87. He establishes every purpose by counsel (Prov. 20:18). God, indeed, uses carnal men to very good service, but without a thorough altering and conviction of their judgment. He works by them, but not in them. Therefore they do neither approve the good they do nor hate the evil they abstain from. #Quote by Richard Sibbes
Conviction quotes by Kelly Corrigan
#88. That's how it works: someone important believes in us, loudly and with conviction and against all substantiation, and over time, we begin to believe, too - not in our shot at perfection, mind you, but in the good enough version of us that they have reflected. #Quote by Kelly Corrigan
Conviction quotes by Erik Erikson
#89. Parents must not only have certain ways of guiding by prohibition and permission, they must also be able to represent to the child a deep, almost somatic conviction that there is meaning in what they are doing. #Quote by Erik Erikson
Conviction quotes by Otto Lilienthal
#90. We returned home, after these experiments, with the conviction that sailing flight was not the exclusive prerogative of birds. #Quote by Otto Lilienthal
Conviction quotes by Anil Sinha
#91. Confidence is something you acquire in yourself by believing in self ability with courage and conviction. #Quote by Anil Sinha
Conviction quotes by Tony Robbins

Conviction quotes by Isabel Briggs Myers
#93. What children need is the conviction that satisfaction can and must be earned ... Spoiled children do not learn the must. #Quote by Isabel Briggs Myers
Conviction quotes by James Madison
#94. Because we hold it for 'a fundamental and undeniable truth', that religion or 'the duty which we owe to our Creator' and the manner of discharging it, can be directed only by reason and conviction, not by force or violence. #Quote by James Madison
Conviction quotes by Ian McEwan
#95. Atheists have as much conscience, possibly more, than people with deep religious conviction, and they still have the same problem of how they reconcile themselves to a bad deed in the past. It's a little easier if you've got a god to forgive you. #Quote by Ian McEwan
Conviction quotes by George Orwell
#96. Here you come upon the important fact that every revolutionary opinion draws part of its strength from a secret conviction that nothing can be changed. #Quote by George Orwell
Conviction quotes by Richard Dyer
#97. The history of representations of Cleopatra provides one of the clearest instances of the conviction that whiteness is the pinnacle of human beauty. Cleopatra became a byword for feminine beauty in European culture, but in the process she had to be represented as white. As #Quote by Richard Dyer
Conviction quotes by Philip K. Howard
#98. We should stop looking to law to provide the final answer ... Law cannot save us from ourselves ... We have to go out and try to accomplish our goals and resolve disagreements by doing what we think is right. That energy and resourcefulness, not millions of legal cubicles, is what was great about America. Let judgment and personal conviction be important again. #Quote by Philip K. Howard
Conviction quotes by Robert D. Putnam
#99. {The Progressives] outlook was activist and optimistic, not fatalist and despondent. The distinctive characteristic of the Progressives was their conviction that social evils would not remedy themselves and that it was foolhardy to wait passively for time's cure. As Herbert Croly put it, they did not believe that the future would take care of itself. Neither should we. #Quote by Robert D. Putnam
Conviction quotes by John Kenneth Galbraith
#100. The traveler to the United States will do wellto prepare himself for the class-consciousness of the natives. This differs from the already familiar English version in being more extreme and based more firmly on the conviction that the class to which the speaker belongs is inherently superior to all others. #Quote by John Kenneth Galbraith
Conviction quotes by Spider Robinson
#101. Me, I have a science fiction writer's conviction that the damn robot is supposed to speak
human, not the other way around. #Quote by Spider Robinson
Conviction quotes by Otto Frank
#102. I think it is not only important that people go to the Anne Frank House to see the secret annex, but also that they are helped to realise that people are also persecuted today because of their race, religion or political convictions. #Quote by Otto Frank
Conviction quotes by Barney Frank
#103. I am very proud of the role I played in getting legal equality for people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender, and in helping get rid of the prejudice by being visible about it, helping to block the conviction of Bill Clinton of impeachment. #Quote by Barney Frank
Conviction quotes by John Le Carre
#104. I had been playing Shostakovich on the stereo, but without conviction. #Quote by John Le Carre
Conviction quotes by Thomas Carlyle
#105. Conviction never so excellent, is worthless until it coverts itself into conduct. #Quote by Thomas Carlyle
Conviction quotes by Sylvain Neuvel
#106. The moral of the story is…Jeff is a moron. A baby axolotl can't fight a fish! You can't expect babies to do the things adults do. You can't expect anyone to do things they can't do. If you ask me to lift five hundred pounds, I can't. It doesn't matter how much I want to, how much conviction I put into it. It's just not something I can do. Maybe if I'd been training all my life, but not now, not tomorrow. #Quote by Sylvain Neuvel
Conviction quotes by Brooke McGlothlin
#107. Somehow, spending time in God's Word helps us hear His voice more clearly. There's nothing like the conviction of the Holy Spirit at just the right time to keep us from going over the edge. #Quote by Brooke McGlothlin
Conviction quotes by Richelle E. Goodrich
#108. If you plan to build walls around me, know this - I will walk through them. #Quote by Richelle E. Goodrich
Conviction quotes by Ibrahim Babangida
#109. Most importantly, nothing has happened to change my conviction that freedom and the love of liberty remain the essential defining attributes of our national character as a people. #Quote by Ibrahim Babangida
Conviction quotes by Saint Basil
#110. We glorify the Holy Ghost together with the Father and the Son, from the conviction that He is not separated from the Divine Nature; for that which is foreign by nature does not share in the same honors. #Quote by Saint Basil
Conviction quotes by Edward De Bono
#111. Everywhere I go, I see very much the same thing. I see the same compassion for people who live half a world away. I see the same concern about events beyond these borders. And, increasingly, I see the same conviction that we can and we must join together to stop the scourge of AIDS and poverty. #Quote by Edward De Bono
Conviction quotes by Roberto Bolano
#112. So I could say we had our first real conversation in the sea, and the feeling I had then, the conviction that I wouldn't make it back to shore, the intimation of death by drowning under a matte blue sky, a sky that looked like a lung in a tub of blue paint, persisted throughout all of our subsequent conversations. #Quote by Roberto Bolano
Conviction quotes by Salma Hayek
#113. People always underestimate me. But if you stick around long enough, act out of conviction, and try to be honorable in everything you do, good things will come to you. #Quote by Salma Hayek
Conviction quotes by Toba Beta
#114. Conviction affects all substances in the vicinity. #Quote by Toba Beta
Conviction quotes by John H. Walton
#115. THE RETRIBUTION PRINCIPLE (RP) is the conviction that the righteous will prosper and the wicked will suffer, both in proportion to their respective righteousness and wickedness. In Israelite theology the principle was integral to the belief in God's justice. #Quote by John H. Walton
Conviction quotes by Ernst T. Krebs
#116. (They) were found guilty of continuing to promote the merits of Laetrile in cancer therapy in violation of terms of probation they had originally secured following their 1973 conviction. #Quote by Ernst T. Krebs
Conviction quotes by Gordon B. Hinckley
#117. It is my faith and conviction that the Constitution came not alone of the brain and purpose of man, but of the inspiration of God. #Quote by Gordon B. Hinckley
Conviction quotes by Benjamin Constant
#118. There is indeed in the contemplation of beauty of any kind, something which detaches us from ourselves by making us feel that perfection is worth more than we are; and that, through this conviction, by inspiring us with a momentary disinterestedness, awakens in us the power of sacrifice, which is the source of all virtues. There is in emotion, whatever its cause, something which makes our blood flow faster, which communicates to us a kind of wellbeing which doubles the sense of our existence and our powers, and that, by doing so, renders us capable of a greater generosity, courage, or sympathy, than we normally feel. Even a corrupt man is better when he is moved and as long as he is moved. #Quote by Benjamin Constant
Conviction quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
#119. The public are a lot of jackasses. If you yell and scream and throw yourself about you'll always get a lot of damned fools to shout themselves silly. Just barnstorming, that's what you've been doing the last four nights. It was false from beginning to end."
"False? But I felt every word of it."
"I don't care what you felt, you weren't acting it. Your performance was a mess. You were exaggerating; you were over-acting; you didn't carry conviction for a moment. It was about as rotten a piece of ham acting as I've ever seen in my life. #Quote by W. Somerset Maugham
Conviction quotes by Adrienne Stoltz
#120. I only want to be with someone I actually love. Love has never happened to me. I guess I'm afraid it never will. But all of a sudden, I have this rock-solid conviction that I don't want to settle for less. #Quote by Adrienne Stoltz
Conviction quotes by Dieter F. Uchtdorf
#121. I do know now I was never forgotten. And I know something else and as an apostle of our master Jesus Christ, I proclaim with all the certainty and conviction of my heart and soul, neither are you. You are not forgotten! Sisters, wherever you are, whatever the circumstances may be, you are not forgotten. No matter how dark your days may seem, no matter how insignificant you may feel, no matter how overshadowed you think you may be, your Heavenly Father has not forgotten you. In fact, He loves you with an infinite love. Just think of it! You are known and remembered by the most majestic, powerful and glorious Being in the universe. You are loved by the King of infinite space and everlasting time. He who created and knows the stars knows you and your name. You are the daughters of His kingdom! #Quote by Dieter F. Uchtdorf
Conviction quotes by Fennel Hudson
#122. Believe in something important. Pursue it wholeheartedly. #Quote by Fennel Hudson
Conviction quotes by Jane Austen
#123. Yet some happiness must and would arise, from the very conviction, that he did suffer. #Quote by Jane Austen
Conviction quotes by Jennifer Strickland
#124. The best kind of people to surround ourselves with are those who reflect faith, hope, and love. They don't expect us to fill their cups and they don't try to fill ours either. God often speaks through these people messages of empowerment and even conviction. But ultimately, these people point us toward the Father for our strength. #Quote by Jennifer Strickland
Conviction quotes by Lewis Carroll
#125. Twenty thousand thieves landed at Hastings. These founders of the House of Lords were greedy and ferocious dragoons, sons of greedy and ferocious pirates ... Such, however, is the illusion of antiquity and wealth, that decent and dignified men now existing, boast their descent from these filthy thieves, who showed a far juster conviction of their own merits, by assuming for their types the swine, goat, jackal, leopard, wolf, and snake, which they severally resembled. #Quote by Lewis Carroll
Conviction quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
#126. The nearer Christ comes to a heart, the more it becomes conscious of its guilt; it will then either ask for his mercy and find peace, or else it will turn against Him because it is not yet ready to give up its sinfulness. Thus He will separate the good from the bad, the wheat from the chaff. Man's reaction to this Divine Presence will be the test: either it will call out all the opposition of egotistic natures, or else galvanize them into a regeneration and a resurrection. #Quote by Fulton J. Sheen
Conviction quotes by Ambrose Bierce
#127. Insurance - an ingenious modern game of chance in which the player is permitted to enjoy the comfortable conviction that he is beating the man who keeps the table. #Quote by Ambrose Bierce
Conviction quotes by David Lloyd George
#128. No democracy has ever long survived the failure of its adherents to be ready to die for it. My own conviction is this, the people must either go on or go under. #Quote by David Lloyd George
Conviction quotes by Dorothy Dunnett
#129. Francis Crawford did not look at the English warden. Instead he wandered to the high window and, gazing down on the mild English countryside, said soberly, 'Affinity? French blood runs in both England and Scotland; their tongue is no barrier. As for religion … Identity of faith is small recommendation. Freedom of faith, surely, is what must be sought for: tolerance between every sect and its neighbour; clemency from every government. Otherwise you have men fighting from conviction who might as well be fighting from devilment: the thing has no more sense in it than your young Allendale's cocks, slashing each other to death only because one will not give way to the other. And if there is to be tolerance, where do you think we may look for it? To England? Or to France, rather? #Quote by Dorothy Dunnett
Conviction quotes by J.I. Packer
#130. But man's eyes are blind through sin, and he can discern no part of God's truth till the Spirit opens them. Inner illumination, leading directly as it does to a deep, inescapable conviction, is thus fundamental to the Spirit's work as a teacher. #Quote by J.I. Packer
Conviction quotes by Archibald Alexander
#131. Now, my friend, I beg you to consider that this blindness and unyielding hardness is the very core of your iniquity, and to be convinced that you are thus blind and stupid is true conviction of sin. #Quote by Archibald Alexander
Conviction quotes by Dean Koontz
#132. Once, when cornered by a pinwheel-eyed man who insisted that the mayor of Los Angeles was not human but a robot controlled by the audioanimatronics department at Disneyland, Joe had lowered his voice and said, with nervous sincerity, "Yes, we've known about that for years. But if we print a word of it, the people at Disney will kill us all." He had spoken with such conviction that the nutball had exploded backward and fled. #Quote by Dean Koontz
Conviction quotes by John Pereira
#133. Are we willing to shun vain repetition and keep our prayers out of an unchallenging rut by asking God to make us more sensitive to our own sin? #Quote by John Pereira
Conviction quotes by Karl Rove
#134. When you appoint someone, you appoint somebody because of their character, their convictions, their abilities. And not because you have a belief, a confidence, in a foreordained outcome in any given decision. #Quote by Karl Rove
Conviction quotes by Jose Ortega Y Gasset
#135. What I have said, and still believe with ever-increasing conviction, is that human society is always,
whether it will or no, aristocratic by its very essence, to the extreme
that it is a society in the measure that it is aristocratic, and ceases to
be such when it ceases to be aristocratic #Quote by Jose Ortega Y Gasset
Conviction quotes by Manoje Basu
#136. I have seen death face to face and returned to the world of living beings. I have savored the fear of death by the drops, My conviction is strong because my experience is direct. Life is full of agitation and anxieties, death is calm, cool and peaceful. It is not death but the fear of death that is painful. And that fear, I tell you, is entirely baseless. #Quote by Manoje Basu
Conviction quotes by William Ellery Channing
#137. Religion is faith in an infinite Creator, who delights in and enjoins that rectitude which conscience commands us to seek. This conviction gives a Divine sanction to duty. #Quote by William Ellery Channing
Conviction quotes by Virginia Woolf
#138. ... the art of writing has for backbone some fierce attachment to an idea ... . It is on the back of an idea, something believed in with conviction or seen with precision and thus compelling words to a shape ... .
You have not finished with it because you have read it, any more than friendship is ended because it is time to part. Life wells up and alters and adds. Even things in a book-case change if they are alive; we find ourselves wanting to meet them again; we find them altered. So we look back upon essay after essay by Mr. Beerbohm, knowing that, come September or May, we shall sit down with them and talk. #Quote by Virginia Woolf
Conviction quotes by Max Lerner
#139. A religion which has lost its basic conviction about the interconnection of men with men in their common struggles for the human, will never command belief in the realm of the superhuman. #Quote by Max Lerner
Conviction quotes by Denis Waitley
#140. You must stick to your conviction, but be ready to abandon your assumptions. #Quote by Denis Waitley
Conviction quotes by Thomas Metzinger
#141. The illusion is irresistible. Behind every face there is a self. We see the signal of consciousness in a gleaming eye and imagine some ethereal space beneath the vault of the skull, lit by shifting patterns of feeling and thought, charged with intention. An essence. But what do we find in that space behind the face, when we look? The brute fact is there is nothing but material substance: flesh and blood and bone and brain ... You look down into an open head, watching the brain pulsate, watching the surgeon tug and probe, and you understand with absolute conviction that there is nothing more to it. There's no one there. #Quote by Thomas Metzinger
Conviction quotes by Randy Alcorn
#142. Tolstoy said, 'The antagonism between life and conscience may be removed either by a change of life or by a change of conscience.' Many of us have elected to adjust our consciences rather than our lives. Our powers of rationalization are unlimited. They allow us to live in luxury and indifference while others, whom we could help if we chose to, starve and go to hell. #Quote by Randy Alcorn
Conviction quotes by Shawn Bolz
#143. When Jesus was moved by compassion, it was not just a feeling he had, but an understanding and conviction of what those people meant to the Father. #Quote by Shawn Bolz
Conviction quotes by Josh McDowell
#144. Belief is knowing what you believe. Conviction is knowing why you believe it. #Quote by Josh McDowell
Conviction quotes by Bryant McGill
#145. Challenge authority; the authority of your own rational convictions. #Quote by Bryant McGill
Conviction quotes by Bertrand Russell
#146. My sad conviction is that people can only agree about what they're not really interested in. #Quote by Bertrand Russell
Conviction quotes by Oswald Chambers
#147. Conviction of sin is one of the rarest things that ever strikes a man. It is the threshold of an understanding of God. Jesus Christ said that when the Holy Spirit came He would convict of sin, and when the Holy Spirit rouses the conscience and brings him into the presence of God, it is not his relationship with men that bothers him, but his relationship with God. #Quote by Oswald Chambers
Conviction quotes by Charlie Houpert
#148. You build a conviction that you have impeccable integrity by living with impeccable integrity. You follow through on the things you say you are going to do. You only make commitments you will keep. You represent yourself honestly to everyone. You cut out lying. Even the little white lies. Even the lies of omission. #Quote by Charlie Houpert
Conviction quotes by Erin O'Connor
#149. I think most of my career has been built on conviction and the personality to carry that image or stride confidently on the catwalk. That was my beginning and, hopefully, my legacy. #Quote by Erin O'Connor
Conviction quotes by Francois-Rene De Chateaubriand
#150. I am Bourbon as a matter of honour , royalist according to reason and conviction, and republican by taste and character . #Quote by Francois-Rene De Chateaubriand
Conviction quotes by Jane Austen
#151. Her sensations on the discovery made her perfectly speechless. She could not even thank him. She could only hang over little Charles, with most disordered feelings. His kindness in stepping forward to her relief – the manner - the silence in which it had passed – the little particulars of the circumstance – with the conviction soon forced on her by the noise he was studiously making with the child, that he meant to avoid hearing her thanks, and rather sought to testify that her conversation was the last of his wants, produced such a confusion of varying, but very painful agitation, as she could not recover from, till enabled by the entrance of Mary and the Miss Musgroves to make over her little patience to their cares, and leave the room. She could not stay. It might have been an opportunity of watching the loves and jealousies of the four; they were now all together, but she could stay for none of it. It was evident that Charles Hayter was not well inclined towards Captain Wentworth. She had a strong impression of his having said, in a vext tone of voice, after Captain Wentworth's interference, 'You ought to have minded me, Walter; I told you not to teaze your aunt;' and could comprehend his regretting that Captain Wentworth should do what he ought to have done himself. But neither Charles Hayter's feelings, nor any body's feelings, could interest her, till she had a little better arranged her own. She was ashamed of herself, quite ashamed of being so nervous, so overcome b #Quote by Jane Austen
Conviction quotes by Bertrand Russell
#152. When the intensity of emotional conviction subsides, a man who is in the habit of reasoning will search for logical grounds in favour of the belief which he finds in himself. #Quote by Bertrand Russell
Conviction quotes by Roscoe Conkling
#153. Obeying instructions I should never dare to disregard, expressing, also, my own firm conviction, I rise in behalf of the State of New York to propose a nomination with which the country and the Republican party can grandly win. #Quote by Roscoe Conkling
Conviction quotes by Marvin J. Ashton
#154. Proper attitude in this crisis-dominated world is a priceless possession. Never before is it more important for all of us to move forward with conviction. We may be behind, but we are not losing if we are moving in the right direction. God will not score our performances until the end of the journey. #Quote by Marvin J. Ashton
Conviction quotes by Wendell Berry
#155. He was all show, and he had the conviction, as such people do, that show is the same as substance. He didn't think he was fooling other people; he had fooled himself. #Quote by Wendell Berry
Conviction quotes by P. Djèlí Clark
#156. Even now, you fail to grasp the strength of my conviction." And with those last words, he plunged the three blades through his body - one stabbing into his chest, a second ripping apart the armor surrounding his heart, and a third sliding through the metallic links of his neck. Bright fluid like the blood of a star poured from the wounds. He swayed, then toppled to crash upon the ground and was still.

"Well, that was unexpected," Siti remarked. #Quote by P. Djèlí Clark
Conviction quotes by Storm Jameson
#157. In what touches their social convictions, most persons do not think. The threat of change, with all it suggests to them in the loss of social and economic privilege, alarms so deeply that they are incapable of unprejudiced thought. They seem to themselves to be thinking, with lucidity and fairness, but since they start from the conviction that change must undoubtedly be for the worse or from settled grief at the thought of losing what is old and lovely, they are doing no more than following a logical sequence of ideas from a false premise. #Quote by Storm Jameson
Conviction quotes by F Scott Fitzgerald
#158. I must hold in balance the sense of the futility of effort and the sense of the necessity to struggle; the conviction of the inevitability of failure and still the determination to 'succeed'-and, more than these, the contradiction between the dead hand of the past and the high intentions of the future. If I could do this through the common ills-domestic, professional and personal-then the ego would continue as an arrow shot from nothingness to nothingness with such force that only gravity would bring it to earth at last. #Quote by F Scott Fitzgerald
Conviction quotes by Kate Atkinson
#159. She prayed now, with desperate conviction but no faith, and she suspected it made no difference either way. When #Quote by Kate Atkinson
Conviction quotes by Cornel West
#160. Too many young folk have addiction to superficial things and not enough conviction for substantial things like justice, truth and love. #Quote by Cornel West
Conviction quotes by Brigitte Bardot
#161. I have the courage of my convictions. #Quote by Brigitte Bardot
Conviction quotes by Dan Simmons
#162. The cruciform does not like pain. Nor do I but, like the cruciform, I am willing to use it to serve my purposes. And I will do so consciously, not instinctively like the mindless mass of alien tissue embedded in me. This thing only seeks a mindless avoidance of death by any means. I do not wish to die, but I welcome pain and death rather than an eternity of mindless life. Life is sacred--I still hold to that as a core element of the Church's though and teachings these past twenty-eight hundred years when life has been so cheap--but even more sacred is the soul.
I realize now that what I was trying to do with the Armaghast data was offer the Church not a rebirth but only a transition to a false life such as these poor walking corpses inhabit. If the Church is meant to die, it must do so--but do so gloriously, in the full knowledge of its rebirth in Christ. It must go into the darkness not willingly but well--bravely and firm of faith--like the millions who have gone before us, keeping faith with all those generations facing death in the isolated silence of death camps and nuclear fireballs and cancer wards and pogroms, going into the darkness, if not hopefully, then prayerful that there is some reason for it all, something worth the price of all that pain, all those sacrifices., All those before us have gone into the darkness without assurance of logic or fact or persuasive theory, with only a slender thread of hope or the all too shakable conviction of faith. And if the #Quote by Dan Simmons
Conviction quotes by Peter Medawar
#163. The intensity of a conviction that a hypothesis is true has no bearing on whether it is true or false. The importance of the strength of our conviction is only to provide a proportionately strong incentive to find out if the hypothesis will stand up to critical evaluation. #Quote by Peter Medawar
Conviction quotes by Helene Hanff
#164. I never overcame my conviction that writing for commercial television was a kind of prostitution. #Quote by Helene Hanff
Conviction quotes by Martin Luther King, Jr.
#165. They were too God-intoxicated to be "astronomically intimidated." They brought an end to such ancient evils as infanticide and gladiatorial contest. #Quote by Martin Luther King, Jr.
Conviction quotes by Archibald Marwizi
#166. The trusted quality and power of the believed sponsor of your words will have a big impact on the power released in and through your words. You should have sufficient sponsorship to counter the kind of words you do not want to influence your life, thoughts and mission. Contrary words and convincing voices will encounter you on the route to your destiny and they need to be countered with strong conviction and authority. #Quote by Archibald Marwizi
Conviction quotes by David T. Dellinger
#167. Our experience of the governments of the world, our knowledge of the weapons at their disposal, and our awareness of our own limitations justify pessimism. But some mysterious factor deep in the human psyche has produced a countervailing conviction that educating, organizing, uniting, and acting will make a difference. #Quote by David T. Dellinger
Conviction quotes by Georg C. Lichtenberg
#168. The natural scientists of the previous age knew less than we do and believed they were very close to the goal: we have taken very great steps in its direction and now discover we are still very far away from it. With the most rational philosophers an increase in their knowledge is always attended by an increased conviction of their ignorance. #Quote by Georg C. Lichtenberg
Conviction quotes by Prem Jagyasi
#169. Believe in yourself and move forth with conviction to have better control over your senses and yourself. #Quote by Prem Jagyasi
Conviction quotes by Albert Camus
#170. Nihilistic passion, adding to
falsehood and injustice, destroys in its fury its original demands and thus deprives rebellion of its most
cogent reasons. It kills in the fond conviction that this world is dedicated to death. The consequence of
rebellion, on the contrary, is to refuse to legitimize murder because rebellion, in principle, is a protest
against death. #Quote by Albert Camus
Conviction quotes by Karen Horney
#171. Many such relations are carried on under the camouflage of love, that is, under a subjective conviction of attachment, when actually the love is only the person's clinging to others to satisfy his own needs. #Quote by Karen Horney
Conviction quotes by Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
#172. The thought of death leaves me in perfect peace, for I have a firm conviction that our spirit is a being of indestructible nature; it works on from eternity to eternity, it is like the sun, which though it seems to set to our mortal eyes, does not really set, but shines on perpetually. #Quote by Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
Conviction quotes by Peace Pilgrim
#173. Penance is the willingness to undergo hardships for the achievement of a good purpose. I was willing. But when hardships came I found myself lifted above them. Instead of hardship, I found a wonderful sense of peace and joy and conviction that I was following God's will. Blessings instead of hardships are showered upon me. #Quote by Peace Pilgrim
Conviction quotes by Noam Chomsky
#174. That is what I have always understood to be the essence of anarchism: the conviction that the burden of proof has to be placed on authority, and that it should be dismantled if that burden cannot be met. #Quote by Noam Chomsky
Conviction quotes by Richard Baxter
#175. When Christ comes with regenerating grace, he finds no man sitting still, but all posting to eternal ruin, and making haste toward hell; till, by conviction, he first brings them to a stand, and then, by conversion, turn first their hearts, and then their lives, sincerely to himself. #Quote by Richard Baxter
Conviction quotes by Winston S. Churchill
#176. So long as I am acting from duty and conviction, I am indifferent to taunts and jeers. I think they will probably do me more good than harm. #Quote by Winston S. Churchill
Conviction quotes by Richard Dawkins
#177. The patient typically finds himself impelled by some deep, inner conviction that something is true, or right, or virtuous: a conviction that doesn't seem to owe anything to evidence or reason, but which, nevertheless, he feels as totally compelling and convincing. We doctors refer to such a belief as 'faith'. #Quote by Richard Dawkins
Conviction quotes by Kate Chopin
#178. For the first time, she recognized the symptoms of infatuation which she had felt incipiently as a child, as a girl in her early teens, and later as a young woman. The recognition did not lessen the reality, the poignancy of the revelation by any suggestion or promise of instability. The past was nothing to her; offered no lesson which she was willing to heed. The future was a mystery which she never attempted to penetrate. The present alone was significant; was hers, to torture her as it was doing then with the biting conviction that she had lost that which she had held, she had been denied that which her impassioned, newly awakened being demanded. #Quote by Kate Chopin
Conviction quotes by Beth Moore
#179. To feel no conviction of sin for a length of time is a serious sign that the Holy Spirit may not reside in us. We can quench the Spirit, but we cannot disable Him. #Quote by Beth Moore
Conviction quotes by Arthur Schopenhauer
#180. The conviction that the world, and therefore man too, is something which really ought not to exist is in fact calculated to instil in us indulgence towards one another: for what can be expected of beings placed in such a situation as we are? From this point of view one might indeed consider that the appropriate form of address between man and man ought to be, not monsieur, sir, but fellow sufferer, compagnon de misères. However strange this may sound it corresponds to the nature of the case, makes us see other men in a true light and reminds us of what are the most necessary of all things: tolerance, patience, forbearance and charity, which each of us needs and which each of us therefore owes. #Quote by Arthur Schopenhauer
Conviction quotes by J. Budziszewski
#181. Christian faith undercuts the urge to fix everything on our own, through conviction of the final helplessness of man and confidence in the providence of God
through certainty that only God can set everything to rights, and faith that in the end, He will. Man can only ameliorate, not cure. #Quote by J. Budziszewski
Conviction quotes by Bayard Rustin
#182. It is, in short, the growing conviction that the Negroes cannot win - a conviction with much grounding in experience - which accounts for the new popularity of black power. So far as the ghetto Negro is concerned, this conviction expresses itself in hostility, first toward the people closest to him who have held out the most promise and failed to deliver (Martin Luther King, Roy Wilkins, etc.), then toward those who have proclaimed themselves his friends (the liberals and the labor movement), and finally toward the only oppressors he can see (the local storekeeper and the policeman on the corner). On the leadership level, the conviction that the Negroes cannot win takes other forms, principally the adoption of what I have called a "no-win" policy. Why bother with programs when their enactment results only in sham? Why concern ourselves with the image of the movement when nothing significant has been gained for all the sacrifices made by SNCC and CORE? Why compromise with reluctant white allies when nothing of consequence can be achieved anyway? Why indeed have anything to do with whites at all?

On this last point, it is extremely important for white liberals to understand what, one gathers from their references to "racism in reverse," the President and the Vice-President of the United States do not: that there is all the difference in the world between saying, "If you don't want me, I don't want you" (which is what some proponents of black power have in effect bee #Quote by Bayard Rustin
Conviction quotes by Marcel Proust
#183. Perhaps the immobility of the things that surround us is forced upon them by our conviction that they are themselves, and not anything else, and by the immobility of our conceptions of them. #Quote by Marcel Proust

#187. The only time Republicans will shake fists and point fingers is over a war delayed, one that isn't led by the US, or a war waged without the necessary conviction (read collateral damage). #Quote by Ilana Mercer
Conviction quotes by Nathaniel Hawthorne
#188. Returning to the arched window, she lifted her eyes- scowling, poor dim-sighted Hepzibah, in the face of heaven!- and strove hard to send up a prayer through the dense grey pavement of clouds. Those mists had gathered , as if to symbolize a great, brooding mass of human trouble, doubt, confusion, and chill indifference, between earth and the better regions. Her faith was too weak; the prayer to heavy to be thus uplifted. It fell back, a lump of lead, upon her heart. It smote her with the wretched conviction that Providence intermeddled not in these petty wrongs of one individual to his fellow, nor had any balm for these little agonies of a solitary soul; but shed it's justice , and it's mercy, in a broad, sunlike sweep, over half the universe at once. It's vastness made it nothing. But Hepzibah did not see that, just as there comes a warm sunbeam into every cottage window, so comes a lovebeam of God's care and pity for every separate need #Quote by Nathaniel Hawthorne
Conviction quotes by Joan Didion
#189. [O]ne of the mixed blessings of being twenty and twenty-one and even twenty-three is the conviction that nothing like this, all evidence to the contrary notwithstanding, has ever happened before. #Quote by Joan Didion
Conviction quotes by Dorothy Day
#190. Often we comfort ourselves only with words, but if we pray enough, the conviction will come too that Christ is our King, not Stalin, Bevins, or Truman. That He has all things in His hands, that 'all things work together for good for those that love Him. #Quote by Dorothy Day
Conviction quotes by Hannah Arendt
#191. It was characteristic of the rise of the Nazi movement in Germany and of the Communist movements in Europe after 1930 that they recruited their members from this mass of apparently indifferent people whom all other parties had given up as too apathetic or too stupid for their attention. The result was that the majority of their membership consisted of people who never before had appeared on the political scene. This permitted the introduction of entirely new methods into political propaganda, and indifference to the arguments of political opponents; these movements not only placed themselves outside and against the party system as a whole, they found a membership that had never been reached, never been "spoiled" by the party system. Therefore they did not need to refute opposing arguments and consistently preferred methods which ended in death rather than persuasion, which spelled terror rather than conviction. They presented disagreements as invariably originating in deep natural, social, or psychological sources beyond the control of the individual and therefore beyond the power of reason. This would have been a shortcoming only if they had sincerely entered into competition with other parties; it was not if they were sure of dealing with people who had reason to be equally hostile to all parties. #Quote by Hannah Arendt
Conviction quotes by Joni Mitchell
#192. Innocence is drowned in anarchy. The best lack conviction given time to think, and the worst are full of passion without mercy. #Quote by Joni Mitchell
Conviction quotes by Algernon Blackwood
#193. Certain houses, like certain persons, manage somehow to proclaim at once their character for evil. In the case of the latter, no particular feature need betray them; they may boast an open countenance and an ingenuous smile; and yet a little of their company leaves the unalterable conviction that there is something radically amiss with their being: that they are evil. Willy nilly, they seem to communicate an atmosphere of secret and wicked thoughts which makes those in their immediate neighbourhood shrink from them as from a thing diseased. #Quote by Algernon Blackwood
Conviction quotes by James Madison

Conviction quotes by Elizabeth Reyes
#195. The connection he felt with her at that moment was mind-boggling. "No regrets," he whispered.

It was more of a statement than a question but she responded with a smile, shook her head and repeated the two words he'd just spoken with as much conviction as he felt. "No regrets."
