California quotes by Sandra Steingraber
#1. Here in the United States, a study of nearly 700 women in California showed an increased risk of fetal death among babies whose mothers lived near crops when certain pesticides were sprayed. The largest risks were found among pregnant women exposed during the critical first trimester and among those who lived in the same square mile where pesticides were used. #Quote by Sandra Steingraber

California quotes by Adam Ferrara
#4. In California, the lines on the road are just a suggestion. They're in the left lane with the left indicator on, so naturally it's time to turn right! Are you kidding me? In your Prius? I know, you're saving the Earth by trying to kill the people! #Quote by Adam Ferrara
California quotes by Wayne Rogers
#5. There is a big cry in California to stop everyone from running to Canada. #Quote by Wayne Rogers
California quotes by Dylan Perry
#6. It was one of those decisions that shouldn't have been so easy to get so wrong. Go on your own or take the half wasted waif. She was wearing denim hotpants with a pink vest top, and was hanging off his arm, more for stability than closeness, so he propped her up against the wall next to the counter and reached inside his coat pocket for his badge. It was definitely his badge, he clearly remembered stealing it two years before whilst in California. #Quote by Dylan Perry
California quotes by Bernie Sanders
#7. Fifty years ago, great schools like the University of California and the City University of New York - as well as many state colleges - were tuition free. Today college is unaffordable for many working class families. For the sake of our economy and millions of Americans, we must make higher education more affordable. #Quote by Bernie Sanders
California quotes by Vanessa Marcil
#8. My family didn't have any money growing up. I'm just a girl from the ghetto; from Indio, California. #Quote by Vanessa Marcil
California quotes by Beth Anderson
#9. Everything is just better in California - the wine, the food, fruits and vegetables, the comforts of living. Even the instrumentalists are generous and curious. Everything is wonderful. #Quote by Beth Anderson
California quotes by Michelle Huneven
#10. My mother, a nonpracticing Jew from Delaware, had married a non-practicing Protestant in California. Sometimes, certainly not always, Jew + Protestant = Unitarian, and that is what we were - 'Jewnitarians,' as I like to say. #Quote by Michelle Huneven
California quotes by Jane Brody
#11. In 1966 the ACS formulated a State Model Cancer Act which was instrumental in the enactment of anti-quackery laws now enforced in 9 states ... In California (it is a) felony ... The use of unproven methods is also a criminal offense in Colorado, Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, Nevada, North Dakota, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. #Quote by Jane Brody
California quotes by Chad Smith
#12. I had sort of exhausted all the avenues playing in Detroit. So again, through the stewardship of my brother, I ended up in California and went to the Musicians Institute in L.A. I wanted to get better as a player. #Quote by Chad Smith

California quotes by Hank Bracker
#14. Weston, having been born in Chicago, was raised with typical, well-grounded, mid-western values. On his 16th birthday, his father gave him a Kodak camera with which he started what would become his lifetime vocation. During the summer of 1908, Weston met Flora May Chandler, a schoolteacher who was seven years older than he was. The following year the couple married and in time they had four sons.
Weston and his family moved to Southern California and opened a portrait studio on Brand Boulevard, in the artsy section of Glendale, California, called Tropico. His artistic skills soon became apparent and he became well known for his portraits of famous people, such as Carl Sandburg and Max Eastman. In the autumn of 1913, hearing of his work, Margrethe Mather, a photographer from Los Angeles, came to his studio, where Weston asked her to be his studio assistant. It didn't take long before the two developed a passionate, intimate relationship. Both Weston and Mather became active in the growing bohemian cultural scene in Los Angeles. She was extremely outgoing and artistic in a most flamboyant way. Her bohemian sexual values were new to Weston's conventional thinking, but Mather excited him and presented him with a new outlook that he found enticing. Mather was beautiful, and being bisexual and having been a high-class prostitute, was delightfully worldly. Mather's uninhibited lifestyle became irresistible to Weston and her photography took him into a new and exciting art form. #Quote by Hank Bracker
California quotes by Francine Rivers
#15. But strength alone, though of the Muses born, Is like a fallen angel: trees uptorn, Darkness, and worms, and shrouds, and sepulchers Delight it; for it feeds upon the burrs And thorns of life; forgetting the great end Of poesy, that it should be a friend To soothe the cares, and lift the thoughts of man. KEATS CALIFORNIA, 1850 #Quote by Francine Rivers
California quotes by Azim Premji
#16. I was 21 and had spent the last few years in Stanford University Engineering School at California. Many people advised me to take up a nice, cushy job rather than face the challenges of running a hydrogenated oil business. Looking back, I am glad I decided to take charge instead. Essentially leadership begins from within. It is a small voice that tells you where to go when you feel lost. If you believe in that voice, you believe in yourself. #Quote by Azim Premji
California quotes by Avi
#17. In another corner Nathaniel murmured to Maura, "You must know, Miss O'Connell, I ... I loved you even before I saw you. It was your father's way of talking."
Maura shook her head. "You mustn't say that. It's not my dear da's words that should do the wooing," she said gently. "I'd rather be cared for ... for what I am myself."
Nathaniel nodded. "I'll not say more. But I will tell you what I think I'm going to do."
And what is that
I'm going to California to search for gold."
And do you think, Nathaniel Brewster, you'll find it?"
I do. But it won't be as fine as what's here," Nathaniel said with a shy smile. "Maura O'Connell ... will ... will you ... wait for me to come back?"
Maura was silent.
Will you?"
You're a fine young man, Mr. Brewster. I can only say I'll not forget you. #Quote by Avi
California quotes by Louis C.K.
#18. Race doesn't mean what it used to in America anymore. It just doesn't. Obama's black, but he's not black the way people used to define that. Is black your experience or the color of your skin? My experience is as a Mexican immigrant, more so than someone like George Lopez. He's from California. But he'll be treated as an immigrant. I am an outsider. My abuelita, my grandmother, didn't speak English. My whole family on my dad's side is in Mexico. I won't ever be called that or treated that way, but it was my experience. #Quote by Louis C.K.
California quotes by Ilya Ilf

California quotes by Louie Anderson

California quotes by Richard Florida
#21. New Jersey boasts the highest percentage of passport holders (68%); Delaware (67%), Alaska (65%), Massachusetts (63%), New York (62%), and California (60%) are close behind. At the opposite end of the spectrum, less than one in five residents of Mississippi are passport holders, and just one in four residents of West Virginia, Kentucky, Alabama, and Arkansas. #Quote by Richard Florida

California quotes by Richard Li
#24. If you look at some of the smaller capital markets in Asia, when they want funding, they either come here to Hong Kong or they go to California, the mecca of the Internet, because they can capture the liquidity and then move on and do what they want to do, which is develop a business. #Quote by Richard Li
California quotes by Emma Cline
#25. The only teenagers in town seemed to kill themselves in gruesomely rural ways - I heard about their pickups crashing at two in the morning, the sleepover in the garage camper ending in carbon monoxide poisoning, a dead quarterback. I didn't know if this was a problem born of country living, the excess of time and boredom and recreational vehicles, or whether it was a California thing, a grain in the light urging risk and stupid cinematic stunts #Quote by Emma Cline
California quotes by Ross Macdonald
#26. There was nothing wrong with Southern California that a rise in the ocean level wouldn't cure. #Quote by Ross Macdonald
California quotes by Robert Pinsky
#27. A reflection on Robert Lowell

Robert Lowell knew I was not one of his devotees. I attended his famous "office hours" salon only a few times. Life Studies was not a book of central importance for me, though I respected it. I admired his writing, but not the way many of my Boston friends did. Among poets in his generation, poems by Elizabeth Bishop, Alan Dugan, and Allen Ginsberg meant more to me than Lowell's. I think he probably sensed some of that.

To his credit, Lowell nevertheless was generous to me (as he was to many other young poets) just the same. In that generosity, and a kind of open, omnivorous curiosity, he was different from my dear teacher at Stanford, Yvor Winters. Like Lowell, Winters attracted followers - but Lowell seemed almost dismayed or a little bewildered by imitators; Winters seemed to want disciples: "Wintersians," they were called.

A few years before I met Lowell, when I was still in California, I read his review of Winters's Selected Poems. Lowell wrote that, for him, Winters's poetry passed A. E. Housman's test: he felt that if he recited it while he was shaving, he would cut himself. One thing Lowell and Winters shared, that I still revere in both of them, was a fiery devotion to the vocal essence of poetry: the work and interplay of sentences and lines, rhythm and pitch. The poetry in the sounds of the poetry, in a reader's voice: neither page nor stage.

Winters criticizing the violence of Lowell's #Quote by Robert Pinsky

California quotes by Mark Twain
#30. All scenery in California requires distance to give it its highest charm. #Quote by Mark Twain
California quotes by Jerry Jones
#31. With the initial focus groups and the initial look-sees, the Rams are a very popular team in Southern California. And so one of the reasons that it was attractive to us to work against them is because they have that good flavor. #Quote by Jerry Jones
California quotes by Jack Paar
#32. The California cemeteries make dying sound so attractive it's a real effort to keep breathing. #Quote by Jack Paar
California quotes by Alistair Cooke
#33. So the British, of all ages, still walk the course. On trips to Florida or the American desert, they still marvel, or shudder, at the fleets of electric carts going off in the morning like the first assault wave at the Battle of El Alamein. It is unlikely, for some time, that a Briton will come across in his native land such a scorecard as Henry Longhurst rescued from a California club and cherished till the day he died. The last on its list of local rules printed the firm warning "A Player on Foot Has No Standing on the Course." #Quote by Alistair Cooke
California quotes by Sean Hannity
#34. We have a situation where we have a lawmaker here in California who says that if you spank the child, you spank them, you're going to go to jail for a year or you're going to pay a $1,000 fine. #Quote by Sean Hannity
California quotes by Luis Valdez
#35. A lot of the public responses are based on the prejudices and ignorance, they've been inherited from previous generations. California has always been a multicultural state, but the thing is, you've got to open your eyes and people in general need to get over their own prejudices. #Quote by Luis Valdez
California quotes by J. California Cooper
#36. I was telling stories before I could write. I like to tell stories, and I like to talk to things. If you]ve read fairy tales, you know that everything can talk, from trees to chairs to tables to brooms. So I grew up thinking that, and I turned it into stories. #Quote by J. California Cooper
California quotes by Robert Anton Wilson
#37. The minority who actually loves its work seems to be made up chiefly of the writers, dancers, actors and other artists, most scientists above the technician-troll level, computer freaks, and the righteous dope-dealers of California. #Quote by Robert Anton Wilson
California quotes by Jenny O.
#38. I love California. It definitely represents wild freedom. #Quote by Jenny O.
California quotes by Alexander Berkman
#39. I have said that there is no "average" American. That is due to the circumstance that the people of the United States differ from each as widely as the parts they live in. The New Yorker is a different specimen of man from the Westerner; the latter is entirely different again from the people of Texas. The Middle West, such States for instance as Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska or Iowa, have an entirely different psychology from that of Florida or Lower California. Their habits of life, their modes of thought, even their language is different. Still further, it must also be considered that millions of foreigners and descendants of foreign born people live in the United States and are part of the entire population that is known as "American". Add to this more than 10 million negroes, not to mention the score of different Indian (red-skin) tribes, who are the real, indigenous Americans. In this conglomeration of races it is impossible to speak of the "average" American, nor can any adequate estimate of American psychology be made on such a basis. #Quote by Alexander Berkman
California quotes by Kelly Corrigan
#40. I almost threw up the first time I set foot inside the University of California, San Francisco's Comprehensive Care Center and joined the stream of thin, slow-moving, low-voiced, gray-skinned people. I didn't want to be one of the pitied, the struck-down. #Quote by Kelly Corrigan
California quotes by Shane Claiborne
#41. Christians can no longer refer to 'our troops' or 'our history' because of their new identity. Fabricated boundaries and walls are removed for the Christian. One's neighbor is not only from Chicago but also from Baghdad. One's brother or sister in the church could be from Iran or California
no difference! Our family is transnational and borderless; we are in Iraq, and we are in Palestine. And if we are indeed to become born again, we will have to begin talking like it, changing the meaning of we, us, my, and our. #Quote by Shane Claiborne
California quotes by Robertson Davies
#42. Of course, fairies are all imported in North America. We have no native fairies. The Little People do not long survive importation unless they go to California and grow large and beautiful, but haven't much flavour, like the fruit and the film stars. #Quote by Robertson Davies
California quotes by Alex Kingston
#43. Californians don't have that marvelous British cynicism, but then the British can be so patronizing at times. #Quote by Alex Kingston
California quotes by John Burdett
#44. On a whim, Pisit calls the monk back to ask what he thinks of all this, and Western culture in general. After his drubbing just now he is in a Zen-ish sort of mood, not to say downright sarcastic: 'Actually, the West is Culture of Emergency: Twisters in Texas, earthquakes in California, windchill in Chicago, drought, flood, famine, epidemics, war on everything - watch out for that meteor and how much longer does the sun really have? Of course, if you didn't believe you could control everything, there wouldn't be an emergency, would there? #Quote by John Burdett
California quotes by Robert E. Morsberger
#45. Zorro also is part of the bandido tradition, most closely associated with the possibly mythical Joaquin Murrieta and the historical Tiburcio Vasquez. As well as these local California legendary figures, Zorro is an American version of Robin Hood and similar heroes whose stories blend fiction and history, thus moving Zorro into the timeless realm of legend. The original story takes place in the Romantic era, but, more important, Zorro as Diego adds an element of poetry and sensuality, and as Zorro the element of sexuality, to the traditional Western hero. Not all Western heroes are, as D. H. Lawrence said of Cooper's Deerslayer, "hard, isolate, stoic, and a killer," but in the Western genre the hero and villain more often than not share these characteristics. What distinguishes Zorro is a gallantry, a code of ethics, a romantic sensibility, and most significant, a command of language and a keen intelligence and wit. #Quote by Robert E. Morsberger
California quotes by Dianne Harman Cornered Coyote
#46. Maria, it sounds like he was insane. Rational people don't intentionally addict people. I feel sorry for those poor people who were unsuspecting victims. #Quote by Dianne Harman Cornered Coyote
California quotes by James W. Loewen
#47. Glendale, California, is a suburb of Los Angeles, but it lies "about an hour's drive" from Watts, according to a woman who attended high school in Glendale in the mid-1960s. One day, playing tennis after school, she was "shocked to see what appeared to be an incredibly large contingen[t] of National Reserve soldiers! There were tanks, tents, trucks and a lot of soldiers." City officials of this sundown suburb had called out the National Guard to protect Glendale during the Watts riot -- from what, they never specified. #Quote by James W. Loewen
California quotes by Gary Grossman

California quotes by Craig Ferguson
#49. Scientists say over the next hundred years, the coast of California will sink almost five feet. So the presidential candidates need to do something. Mitt Romney is conflicted. On one hand, he denies that global warming exists. But if California is under water, he would definitely win the next election. #Quote by Craig Ferguson
California quotes by Dakota Fanning
#50. I remember when I was very little my idol was Britney Spears. I had just come to California and that's just who I wanted to meet. So I was in a store and she walked in and my jaw just fell to the floor. I started like sweating. I could not believe that I was meeting her. She told me that I was very cute. And I lost it - I was so excited. #Quote by Dakota Fanning
California quotes by Edan Lepucki
#51. Before my book, 'California,' came out, I had modest hopes for it. Or, let's put it this way - I had the same hopes that every literary fiction writer in America has: I wanted the novel to be well-received, critically. As for sales? I didn't want it to disappoint, but I didn't expect it to be a best-seller, either. #Quote by Edan Lepucki
California quotes by Laura Ruby
#52. God will break California from the surface of the continent like someone breaking off a piece of chocolate. It will become its own floating paradise of underweight movie stars and dot-commers, like a fat-free Atlantis with superfast Wi-Fi. #Quote by Laura Ruby

California quotes by Michele Bachmann
#55. I think it's best if there's an amendment that goes on the ballot where the people can weigh in. Every time this issue has gone on the ballot, the people have voted to retain the traditional definition of marriage as recently as California in 2008. #Quote by Michele Bachmann

California quotes by Tim Weiner
#60. But Freeh's FBI managed to bury the fact that its most highly valued source on Chinese espionage in the United States, a politically wired California woman named Katrina Leung, had been spying for China throughout the 1980s and 1990s. All the while, she was having sex with the special agent in charge of her case, a top supervisor of the FBI's China Squad, James J. Smith - and occasionally with a leading FBI counterintelligence expert on China, William Cleveland. #Quote by Tim Weiner

California quotes by Rebecca Solnit
#63. The Eagles's 1977 hit "Hotel California" was a flawless piece of craftsmanship, but it was about upscale fatalism and gilded cages, about the hotel you can check into but never leave. It sounded as though Joan Didion had started writing lyrics. As #Quote by Rebecca Solnit
California quotes by Michelle Pfeiffer
#64. My grandmother raised five children during the Depression by herself. At 50, she threw her sewing machine into the back of a pickup truck and drove from North Dakota to California. She was a real survivor, so that's my stock. That's how I want my kids to be too. #Quote by Michelle Pfeiffer
California quotes by S.E. Hinton
#65. California is like a beautiful wild kid on heroin, high as a kite and thinking she's on top of the world, not knowing she's dying, not believing it even if you show her the marks. #Quote by S.E. Hinton
California quotes by Ken Follett
#66. The original eight cryptanalysts were supplemented, after Pearl Harbor, by some of the musicians from the band of the sunken battleship California. For reasons no one understood, musicians were good at decoding. #Quote by Ken Follett
California quotes by Sarah Ockler
#67. And in this moment of pale dawn in the hours before we leave California, I finally realize what has been the hardest thing for me about Matt's death. It isn't that I lost a brother, like Frankie, or a son, like Aunt Jayne and Uncle Red. The hardest thing is that I'll never know exactly what I lost, how much it should hurt, how long I should keep thinking about him. He took that mystery with him when he died, and a hundred thousand one-sided letters in my journal wouldn't have brought me any closer to the truth than I was the night I pressed my fingers to the sea glass he wore around his neck and kissed him back.
For over a year, the letters were my only connection to him; the only evidence that I didn't imagine our brief time as other. When I first saw my journal helplessly floating on the waves, I felt a loss so immediate and overwhelming it was like being back in the hospital lobby when the doctor told us they couldn't fix him. One minute, the journal was in my hands, soft and familiar and real; the next minute, it was gone.
Just like Matt.
And just like Matt, I need to let it go. #Quote by Sarah Ockler
California quotes by Elinor Glyn
#68. The early symptoms of the disease [California Curse], which break out almost on arrival in Hollywood, are a sense of exaggerated self-importance and self-centeredness which naturally alienates all old friends. Next comes a great desire for and belief in the importance of money above all else, a loss of the normal sense of humor and proportion and finally, in extreme cases, the abandonment of all previous standards of moral value. #Quote by Elinor Glyn
California quotes by Michelle Malkin
#69. Instead of basic roads and bridges, infrastructure spending will go to bloated unions overseeing pie-in-the-sky construction projects like the $30 billion-plus high-speed rail line from Los Angeles to San Francisco, which California officials fully expect to be funded. #Quote by Michelle Malkin
California quotes by Christopher Moore
#70. Winter denial: therein lay the key to California Schadenfreude
the secret joy that the rest of the country feels at the misfortune of California. The country said: "Look at them, with their fitness and their tans, their beaches and their movie stars, their Silicon Valley and silicone breasts, their orange bridge and their palm trees. God, I hate those smug, sunshiny bastards!" Because if you're up to your navel in a snowdrift in Ohio, nothing warms your heart like the sight of California on fire. If you're shoveling silt out of your basement in the Fargo flood zone, nothing brightens your day like watching a Malibu mansion tumbling down a cliff into the sea. And if a tornado just peppered the land around your Oklahoma town with random trailer trash and redneck nuggets, then you can find a quantum of solace in the fact that the earth actually opened up in the San Fernando Valley and swallowed a whole caravan of commuting SUVs. #Quote by Christopher Moore
California quotes by Jonah Lehrer
#71. Even when alternative views are clearly wrong, being exposed to them still expands our creative potential. In a way, the power of dissent is the power of surprise. After hearing someone shout out an errant answer, we work to understand it, which causes us to reassess our initial assumptions and try out new perspectives. "Authentic dissent can be difficult, but it's always invigorating," [Charlan] Nemeth [a professor of psychology at the University of California at Berkeley] says. "It wakes us right up. #Quote by Jonah Lehrer
California quotes by Vanessa Morgan
#72. I was in a music class when I was little, and they discovered I had a talent and could sing. From there, I joined this singing troupe in California, and I would just go sing at festivals in this girl group and perform as much as I could. #Quote by Vanessa Morgan
California quotes by Patrick Stump
#73. I didn't want to give up my Illinois driver's license and was unaware that was a crime. It is, by the way, in the state of California. Lesson learned. I technically broke a law, so technically I deserve whatever I get. #Quote by Patrick Stump
California quotes by Katie Hafner
#74. Doing a geographic" is a term alcoholics often use for acting on the impulse to start over by moving to a new town, or state, instead of making any internal changes. It's the anywhere-but-here part of the disease that says, "Remove yourself from this, go someplace new, and everything will be better." Two years into our Florida stint, my mother pulled a geographic as radical as the move from Rochester. The new plan was to head for California.

She enrolled in the mathematics graduate program at the University of California's shiny new campus in San Diego, and as soon as our elementary school let out for the summer, she put us into a new Buick station wagon – a gift from her parents – and drove us across the country.

You'd think we'd have protested at yet another move. After all, having been duped before, we were in no position to believe that the next move would be any different. But I have no memory of being unhappy about the news. Because that's what often happens when an alcoholic parent is doing a geographic. She pulls you in and, before you know it, you, too, believe in the promise of the new place. #Quote by Katie Hafner
California quotes by George C. Marshall
#75. Regarding the air raid over Los Angeles it was learned by Army G2 that Rear Admiral Anderson ... recovered an unidentified airplane off the coast of California ... with no bearing on conventional explanation. This Headquarters has come to the determination that the mystery airplanes are in fact not earthly and, according to secret intelligence sources, they are in all probability of interplanetary origin. #Quote by George C. Marshall

California quotes by Sean Hannity
#79. People say California is the leading state on these type of issues. I've called my sister today and I said - I have a 3-year-old nephew - "Do you spank?"And she says, "If it's necessary I will. But that's my decision. I'm the mother. Not you." #Quote by Sean Hannity

California quotes by Carly Fiorina
#83. But ours was intended to be a citizen government. It is what of, by and for the people means. And when our most important issue in California is the creation of jobs, I think it's quite helpful to have someone in the U.S. Senate or in the governor's seat who actually knows where jobs come from. #Quote by Carly Fiorina
California quotes by Shailene Woodley
#84. You turn on the shower or you do whatever, but especially right now with the drought in California, there are so many resources that we are depleting so quickly. And so, I thought it would be an interesting skill set to have if something were to go down, or even if it weren't. It's not post-apocalyptic idealism. It's more just like a fun hobby. #Quote by Shailene Woodley
California quotes by Danielle Lazarin
#85. I don't know a lot of women in Paris. They seem to be from another life of mine, and when I transfer to a college in California the next year, I'll be hungry for them but I'll have forgotten how to be around them. It will take years to understand the different things that women want from me than men do. #Quote by Danielle Lazarin

California quotes by James Sinegal
#87. There was a proposal in California that would keep out Wal-Mart but allow Costco. You opposed it. Are you nuts? That's true: I always oppose these kinds of things. Competition makes us better. Some of our best stores have a Sam's Club next door. #Quote by James Sinegal
California quotes by Paul Marciano
#88. We had just recently moved to California from Italy, and while we were driving around, we saw a billboard ad for McDonald's on Olympic Boulevard in Los Angeles. The word 'guess' was in the ad, and my brother decided that that would be the name of our company! #Quote by Paul Marciano

California quotes by Charles Simic
#90. Most of the American films were made in southern California, so if you were in Europe, watching those palm trees swaying in the wind with someone like Rita Hayworth gliding underneath them in a white convertible, you got all kinds of wonderfully wrong ideas about the place. #Quote by Charles Simic
California quotes by Eric Burdon
#91. Having lived in the arid deserts of Southern California since the 1970s, my interest in water conservation is a very personal concern. Water! The source of life! Some people are squandering the world's most precious resource while others have too little clean water to drink. #Quote by Eric Burdon
California quotes by Woody Guthrie
#92. Do Re Mi
California is a garden of Eden, a paradise to live in or see,
But believe it or not, you won't find it so hot
If you ain't got the do re mi #Quote by Woody Guthrie
California quotes by Shane Bauer
#93. CCA finds ways to minimize its obligation to provide adequate health care. At the out-of-state prisons where California ships some of its inmates, CCA will not accept any prisoners who are over sixty-five years old, have mental health issues, or serious conditions like HIV. The company's Idaho prison contract specified that the 'primary criteria' for screening incoming offenders was 'no chronic mental health or health care issues.' The contracts of some CCA prisons in Tennessee and Hawaii stipulate that the states will bear the cost of HIV treatment. Such exemptions allow CCA to tout its cost efficiency while taxpayers assume the medical expenses for the inmates the company won't take or treat. #Quote by Shane Bauer
California quotes by Walter Kohn

California quotes by Rick Perry
#99. Crucial to understanding federalism in modern day America is the concept of mobility, or 'the ability to vote with your feet.' If you don't support the death penalty and citizens packing a pistol - don't come to Texas. If you don't like medicinal marijuana and gay marriage, don't move to California. #Quote by Rick Perry
California quotes by Billy Joel

California quotes by James Cromwell
#101. I don't know how many parts I've lost because a lot of the politics in California are very conservative, and I'm fairly outspoken. I always tried to get as much politics in as I could, because I do believe in class struggle, and I think that's what's left out. #Quote by James Cromwell
California quotes by Curtis Sittenfeld

California quotes by Leonard Birdsong
#103. This one sounds rather gay. A Fresno, California house burglar rubbed spices over the body of a sleeping man before using an 8 inch long sausage to slap the face of another snoozing resident. Antonio Vasquez fled but was caught in a nearby field after police found his wallet and ID in the victims' home. The sausage was eaten by a dog after Vasquez tossed it away. #Quote by Leonard Birdsong

California quotes by Christine Kenneally
#107. At the same time that Lahn's results were published, another team of scientists based at the University of California, San Diego, announced the discovery of a positively selected gene called SIGLEC11 that is expressed in brain cells called microglia. Although they can't yet explain the effects of the gene, it is interesting because it is one of the very few found only in humans and not in our ape cousins. This could make it a candidate for explaining some of the differences between us and them. #Quote by Christine Kenneally

California quotes by Martin Jacques

#112. The coast redwood is a so-called relict species. It is a tiny remnant of a life form that once spread in splendor and power across the face of nature. The redwood has settled down in California to live near the sea, the way many retired people do. #Quote by Richard Preston
California quotes by David Letterman
#113. Arnold Schwarzenegger is now governor of California. He is a very shrewd man - he already has all of his sex scandals behind him. #Quote by David Letterman
California quotes by Kelley Armstrong
#114. Canada?" Ash said. "You didn't say it was in Canada.
"I said Ontario." (Maya)
"I thought you meant Ontario, California."
"Seriously?" Tori said, rolling her eyes. "A helicopter to California? You may be hot,but your sister clearly inherited all the brains in the family."
"Did she call me hot?" Ash whispered to me, looking more annoyed than he ever did when someone called him a jerk.
"She hasn't been on a date in six months", Derek rumbled behind us. "No offense, but as long as aren't related to her, you're fair game. Hell, even
Tori spun on him. "I didn't know."
"Um, wait a sec," Corey said. "So Ash is hot and I'm seriously cute? Is there a difference?"
"Yes," Hayley said, and propelled him through the line. #Quote by Kelley Armstrong

California quotes by Isabel Allende
#116. I've been so thoroughly incorporated into the California culture that I practice meditation and go to a therapist, even though I always set a trap: during my meditation I invent stories to keep from being bored, and in therapy I invent stories to keep from boring the psychologist. #Quote by Isabel Allende

#122. Hot, dry katabatic winds, like the south foehn in Europe, the sharav in the Middle East, and the Santa Ana of Southern California, are all believed to have a decided effect on human behavior and are associated with such health problems as migraines, depression, lethargy, and moodiness. Some scientists say that this is a myth. #Quote by Tim Cahill

California quotes by Robyn Schneider
#125. So I went to sleep thinking of her, of the curve of her back in a light cotton dress, of her hair twisted up into its crown of braids, of her, leaping from the zenith of the plastic swing set and clearing the sandbox, turning a neat lap around the whole of Eastwood, California, while I stood there, trapped in the dreariness of it all, numbly watching. #Quote by Robyn Schneider
California quotes by Mark Hoppus
#126. Even though it was January, in Los Angeles it was beautiful and sunny and the blue skies were out and it was hot everyday, so I think it was just a product of our environment. And California to me as a concept or as an idea always seems like endless optimism and endless opportunity - when people think of California they think of palm trees and blue skies and gorgeous sunsets and beaches and everything else. But there's also this weirdness to California, this darkness, it's a place where people come to follow their dreams and sometimes don't make it. #Quote by Mark Hoppus
California quotes by Nathan Fillion
#127. If I got $300 million from the California Lottery, the first thing I would do is buy the rights to 'Firefly', make it on my own, and distribute it on the Internet. #Quote by Nathan Fillion

California quotes by Victor Davis Hanson
#129. Even Hollywood millionaires are now clamoring for legal protections for their illegal-alien nannies and gardeners, though such elites would hardly countenance a similar legal laxity that would allow foreign film technicians, screenwriters, and actors to flood southern California to work in their industry for a fourth of their own pay. #Quote by Victor Davis Hanson

California quotes by Frank Lewis Nason
#134. A country that has yielded a billion and a half of gold is, perforce, well and favorably known to the uttermost parts of the earth. Though the stream of yellow wealth diminishes, or even ceases to flow, yet the channel is carved through which the thoughts of men longingly roll. Upon such a land no limit of impossibility is placed. #Quote by Frank Lewis Nason

California quotes by Nicolas Berggruen
#138. California has something which not every place in the world has: It has what I would call a sunny side, and I don't mean just physically, but the sunny side is a future. California's worth saving, to put it bluntly. #Quote by Nicolas Berggruen
California quotes by Judy Van Der Veer
#139. California is full of homesick people. #Quote by Judy Van Der Veer
California quotes by Christian Hosoi
#140. I was introduced to skateboarding through my father. He was a surfer back in the 50's & 60's in Hawaii, where my parents grew up. They later moved to California and I was born. Skateboarding was the thing for surfers here in California in the 60's and my Dad immediately made me a homemade board. #Quote by Christian Hosoi
California quotes by Helen Hunt Jackson
#141. There had been no crises of incident, or marked movements of experience such as in Felipe's imaginations of love were essential to the fulness of its growth. This is a common mistake on the part of those who have never felt love's true bonds. Once in those chains, one perceives that they are not of the sort full forged in a day. They are made as the great iron cables are made, on which bridges are swung across the widest water-channels,
not of single huge rods, or bars, which would be stronger, perhaps, to look at; but myriads of the finest wires, each one by itself so fine, so frail, it would barely hold a child's kite in the wind: by hundreds, hundreds of thousands of such, twisted, re-twisted together, are made the mighty cables, which do not any more swerve from their place in the air, under the weight and jar of the ceaseless traffic and tread of two cities, than the solid earth swerves under the same ceaseless weight and jar. Such cables do not break. #Quote by Helen Hunt Jackson
California quotes by Mishell Baker
#142. There's a saying that somebody tilted this country on its end, and everything that wasn't securely attached fell into California. #Quote by Mishell Baker
California quotes by Claire Vaye Watkins

'Your people came here looking for something better. Gold, fame, citrus. Mirage. They were feckless, yeah? Schemers. That's why no one wants them now. Mojavs. #Quote by Claire Vaye Watkins
California quotes by Jonathan Lipnicki
#144. My family actually owns an MMA promotion company, so it's kind of a family deal. It's called Fight Sports Entertainment, and they throw amateur fights in California. Because of that, I've given my mom a lot of the fighters to fight in a show. #Quote by Jonathan Lipnicki
California quotes by Greg Abbott
#145. You can look at the state of California, which is on a pathway to destruction because they expanded government too much, thinking that there would always be someone to pay for it. #Quote by Greg Abbott
California quotes by Julie A. Richman
#146. Schooner and CJ. Like Ken and Barbie come to life. They were the epitome of every out-of-stater's fantasy of what the quintessential California boy and California girl looked like. Schooner and CJ. They were beautiful and they looked like they belonged together. #Quote by Julie A. Richman
California quotes by J. California Cooper
#147. Superior, do you understand me? These are white people. They are not like you, or me or us. They have the power to hurt you ... and sometimes it's fun to them when they do. Their power is not because they are smart ... it's because ... something happened sometime ... started somewhere and they got on top of the world. They got the power. The only power you got is to learn to live with them, learn to read their minds ... til you can do better. They don't treat each other right ... so don't you look to be treated right. You hear me? Sometimes there's good white people ... but don't you act like that til you know that. #Quote by J. California Cooper
California quotes by Brit Marling
#148. I think you get to see, through the different cult members, why people are attracted to a group like this. Everyone is there for a different reason and from a different background. That was part of what was interesting for us, in researching cults and exploring it. A lot of this happens in California. #Quote by Brit Marling
California quotes by Lucy Fry
#149. The first time I came to California was in January 2013, when I auditioned for 'Vampire Academy.' #Quote by Lucy Fry

California quotes by Christopher Hitchens
#151. It's [Los Angeles] mostly full of nonsense and delusion and egomania. They think they'll be young and beautiful forever, even though most of them aren't even young and beautiful now. #Quote by Christopher Hitchens
California quotes by George Takei
#152. I am the grandson of immigrants from Japan who went to America, boldly going to a strange new world, seeking new opportunities. My mother was born in Sacramento, California. My father was a San Franciscan. They met and married in Los Angeles, and I was born there. #Quote by George Takei
California quotes by Chris Kraus
#153. That spring everyone in Judy Chicago's class collaborated on a 24 hour performance called Route 126. The curator Moira Roth recalls: "the group created a sequence of events throughout the day along the highway. The day began with Suzanne Lacy's Car Renovation in which the group decorated an abandoned car…and ended with the women standing on a beach watching Nancy Youdelman, wrapped in yards of gossamer silk, slowly wade out to sea until she drowned, apparently…" There's a fabulous photo taken by Faith Wilding of the car - a Kotex-pink jalopy washed up on desert rocks. The trunk's flung open and underneath it's painted cuntblood red. Strands of desert grass spill from the crumpled hood like Rapunzel's fucked-up hair. According to Performance Anthology - Source Book For A Decade Of California Art, this remarkable event received no critical coverage at the time though contemporaneous work by Baldessari, Burden, Terry Fox boasts bibliographies several pages long. Dear Dick, I'm wondering why every act that narrated female lived experience in the '70s has been read only as "collaborative" and "feminist." The Zurich Dadaists worked together too but they were geniuses and they had names. #Quote by Chris Kraus
California quotes by Gia Coppola
#154. In California, where you're allowed to drive at 16, you get so much freedom with that. It's a freedom to get outside of your parents' house and to do bad things. #Quote by Gia Coppola

California quotes by Jay Leno
#157. Did you hear about this 20-year-old kid named John Walker from Northern California who was apparently fighting for the Taliban? ... It didn't take long for the TV networks to jump on this Walker thing. CBS has a new show: 'Walker: Taliban Ranger.' #Quote by Jay Leno
California quotes by Anthony Head
#158. When I was filming 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' in America, for a couple of weeks beforehand we would always fit in a family holiday in California. #Quote by Anthony Head
California quotes by Marianne Williamson
#159. The only issue that I have a problem with when it comes to the new age is the way that people such as myself are diminished by that label. I simply don't consider myself "new age." It's other people's small-mindedness that tries to connect me with someone who, let's say, thinks crystals are the answers to all of life's problems. I never did. There are those who suggest that anyone speaking from a base in California has less to say. That kind of bashing doesn't interest me. #Quote by Marianne Williamson
California quotes by Janet Yellen
#160. Prospects for growth in the year ahead are solid at the national level, and of course, this can only be good news for the Bay Area and California as well. The U. S. economy has shown remarkable resilience in the face of some severe shocks - in particular, the surge in energy prices that began a couple of years ago and the devastation wrought by the twin hurricanes last summer. #Quote by Janet Yellen
California quotes by Lizzie Brochere
#161. Each time that I have two or three days off, I'm off somewhere in California. #Quote by Lizzie Brochere

California quotes by Jennifer Granholm
#163. California has a beautiful coastline. It can be a rough coastline. The waves are huge. The rocks are steep. Same thing in Vancouver. It has a beautiful coastline. It's dramatic. #Quote by Jennifer Granholm
California quotes by Duncan Hunter
#164. One way to bring down crime in the state of California and every state in the union is to have an enforceable border. That means let's build that border fence. When people want to come into this country, let's ask them to knock on the front door. #Quote by Duncan Hunter
California quotes by Antonio Villaraigosa
#165. I want to figure out how we put California and America back on track - how we bridge this partisan divide that is so polarizing. #Quote by Antonio Villaraigosa
California quotes by Cormac McCarthy
#166. Best way to live in California is to be from somewheres else. #Quote by Cormac McCarthy
California quotes by Matt Haig
#167. There is a tree in California, a Great Basin bristlecone pine that was found, after an intensive ring count, to be five thousand and sixty-five years old.

Even to me, that pine seems old. In recent years, whenever I have despaired of my condition and needed to feel a bit more mortal and ordinary, I think of that tree in California. It has been alive since the Pharaohs. It has been alive since the found of Troy. Since the start of the Bronze Age. Since the start of yoga. Since mammoths.

And it has stayed there, calmly in its spot, growing slowly, producing leaves, losing leaves, producing more, as those mammoths became extinct,... the tree had always been the tree. #Quote by Matt Haig
California quotes by Harlan Coben
#168. Well, if you did, you'd be wrong. It is much, much smaller. Try this: Imagine you're still holding that tiny grain of sand. Now not just the beach you are on, but all the beaches all over the planet, all of them, all down the coast of California and the East Coast from Maine down to Florida and on the Indian Ocean and off the coasts of Africa. Imagine all that sand, all those beaches everywhere in the world and now look at that grain of sand you're holding and still, still, our entire solar system - forget our planet - is smaller than that compared to the rest of the universe. Can you even comprehend how insignifi- cant we are? #Quote by Harlan Coben
California quotes by Ted Danson
#169. I first saw the ocean as a kid. We would drive from Arizona in the summer and arrive as the sun was starting to come down over the hill near Laguna in southern California. We would always sing a song, and it was a big joyous family moment when we came over the hill. #Quote by Ted Danson
California quotes by Taya Kyle
#170. This reminds me of a funny Chris story.
Back when we lived in California, Easter was coming up and Chris was home with the kids. I forget exactly what the children did, but they got out of line and Chris decided rather than disciplining them, he'd use a little daddy logic on them.
Daddy logic, as expressed by a SEAL sniper.
"I'll tell you, you better behave," he said, "or I'll keep the Easter Bunny from coming."
"How?" one of them wondered.
Daddy logic met kid logic and raised the ante through the roof.
"I'll sit on the stoop and I'll shoot him when he comes," said Chris. Somehow he kept a straight face. "You'll ruin it for everyone, not just yourselves."
We had great behavior for weeks.
It's different living with a sniper as a dad. #Quote by Taya Kyle
California quotes by Michelle Malkin
#171. So, what exactly is the News-Press' unforgivable crime? Calling illegal aliens 'illegals' in a headline for a story about illegal aliens descending on California DMVs. A new law went into effect last Friday allowing illegal aliens to obtain driver's licenses without proof of lawful residence. The article featured interviews with ecstatic illegal aliens, including one who has been in the country illegally for '22 years.' #Quote by Michelle Malkin
California quotes by Michael Lewis
#172. The relationship between the people and their money in California is such that you can pluck almost any city at random and enter a crisis. San Jose has the highest per capita income of any city in the United States, after New York. It has the highest credit rating of any city in California with a population over 250,000. It is one of the few cities in America with a triple-A rating from Moody's and Standard & Poor's, but only because its bondholders have the power to compel the city to levy a tax on property owners to pay off the bonds. The city itself is not all that far from being bankrupt. #Quote by Michael Lewis
California quotes by Gael Garcia Bernal
#173. The whole Baja California peninsula is an energetic place, and it's incredibly alive. #Quote by Gael Garcia Bernal
California quotes by Mark Hoppus
#174. We never really set out to talk about California on the album ['California'], it was something that we noticed that was happening about three-quarters of the way through the recording process. We were looking at which songs we thought would make the record and we realised that there was this theme coming through. I think it's just a product of being in California for as long as I have. #Quote by Mark Hoppus

California quotes by Chuck Todd
#178. The problem is sitting in the birthplace of Islam, in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, where this interpretation of Islam has gone out into the world over the last four decades, creating militancy groups from Indonesia, to now, San Bernardino, California, vicious attack. We have to take back the faith. And we have to take it back with the principles of peace, social justice, and human rights, women's rights, and secularize governance. #Quote by Chuck Todd
California quotes by Douglas Coupland
#179. When future archaeologists dig up the remains of California, they're going to find all of those gyms their scary-looking gym equipment, and they're going to assume that we were a culture obsessed with torture. #Quote by Douglas Coupland
California quotes by Bob Filner
#180. However, don't let these statistics mislead you, gang violence is not limited to California and or big urban areas - that might have been true a while ago but it is no longer the case today. #Quote by Bob Filner
California quotes by William J. Clinton
#181. California has become the first American state where there is no majority race, and we're doing just fine. If you look around the room, you can see a microcosm of what we can do in the world ... You should be hopeful on balance about the future. But it's like any future since the beginning of time
you're going to have to make it. #Quote by William J. Clinton
California quotes by Cheech Marin

California quotes by Thomas Mars
#186. In California, there is a strong tension between north and south. #Quote by Thomas Mars
California quotes by Paul Vangelisti
#187. Ablaze with alabaster one must admit
as long as there is near music kicking around
nowhere more winsome than in the outlandish passage
from April to California, Sunday to Jose, March to French
and all the wilderness and Septembers in between.
Slow ghost thicket, a tempo of someone's own,
please please the quintessentially readymade
and risen stranger, the tremor in the house,
rather than some unfinished crime without dragon
or alibi in the drowsy garden.
O savage, O brightening Niagara,
O briefest, fussy thing in ruffled light,
wait, I am a stranger here myself. #Quote by Paul Vangelisti
California quotes by Anna Eshoo
#188. I'm a free market person, a free trader. But if we had a market in California, there would be competition. #Quote by Anna Eshoo
California quotes by Jennifer Echols
#189. I wish you would, because I'm not sure how long I can put up with this."
"I'll bet you can put up with it a little longer," I said brightly, desperate to get out from under the heavy subject. "How much do you love college in New York?"
He grinned. "I love college in New York. I love just being in the city. I love my classes. I love the hospital. I wish I weren't there at two in the morning because I also love sleep, but I do love the hospital. I love Manohar and Brian. In a manly love kind of way, of course."
"Of course," I said, the corners of my mouth stretched tight, trying not to laugh. "You get along great with everybody. Because that's what you do."
"Because that's what I do," he agreed. "Do you love college in New York?"
I sighed, a big puff of white air. "I do love college in New York. Lately I've been so busy with work and homework that I might as well be in Iowa, but I remember loving college in New York a month ago. I'm afraid it may be coming to a close, though."
He leaned nearer. "Seriously."
"If I got that internship," I said, "I could hold on. Otherwise I'm in trouble. I wanted so badly to start my publishing career in the publishing mecca. But maybe that's not possible for me now. I can write anywhere, I guess." I laughed.
He didn't laugh. "What will you do, then?"
"I might try California," I said. "It's almost as expensive as New York, though. And it's tainted in my mind because my mother tried it with the worst of #Quote by Jennifer Echols

#190. This process, one of trading the state to outside owners in exchange for their (it now seems) entirely temporary agreement to enrich us, in toher words the pauperization of California, had in fact begun at the time Americans first entered the state, took what they could, and, abetted by the native weekness for boosterism, set about selling the rest. #Quote by Joan Didion

#191. California, that advance post of our civilization, with its huge aircraft factories, TV and film studios, automobile way of life ... its flavourless cosmopolitanism, its charlatan philosophies and religions, its lack of anything old and well-tried rooted in tradition and character. #Quote by J.B. California quotes by Katharine Graham
#192. Who is going to influence whom in the new association? Warren may have entered the ocean in California, but I am sitting down in Virginia with Ben Graham's beginner's book and "How to Read a Financial Report" by someone called Merrill, Lynch, Pierce, Fenner and Smith. I am told I have to finish Ben Graham very soon because Warren is unwilling to pay the small fine involved in having the book out of the Omaha public library too long. #Quote by Katharine Graham
California quotes by Teddy Begay
#193. Outside, the grandchildren from California looked at Grandma Eunice with curiosity as they played near her. Some walked up to her to shake her hand. They had brunette to light brown hair, light complex skin and hazel colored eyes with Native American characteristics quite prominent They showed a trait noticeable in their appearance [...] Once upon a time and era, they too, have been looked upon like the elderly in the rest homes; like they didn't exist, outcast and shamed to be part of a human race that their blood should ever mix among mankind. Yet, these were her bloodlines too, and they were here, laughing, joking, teasing and accepting each other #Quote by Teddy Begay

California quotes by Gary Snyder
#195. Here is perhaps the most delicious turn that comes out of thinking about politics from the standpoint of place: anyone of any race, language, religion, or origin is welcome, as long as they live well on the land. The great Central Valley region does not prefer English over Spanish or Japanese or Hmong. If it had any preferences at all, it might best like the languages it has heard for thousands of years, such as Maidu or Miwok, simply because it is used to them. Mythically speaking, it will welcome whomever chooses to observe the etiquette, express the gratitude, grasp the tools, and learn the songs that it takes to live there. #Quote by Gary Snyder
